(Some Hockey Fan)   Sens and Leafs kick off their NHL seasons tonight. The game doesn't mean all that much for Toronto though, as the Leafs have already been mathmatically eliminated from the playoffs   (nhl.com ) divider line 80

The Sens are loading their big guns tonight putting the Pizza/Cash line together, so things are looking rather good.

The only knack I have is the fact that we went 7-0 in the pre-season. I think theres a rule somewhere that if you do too well in the pre-season you automatically lose your first 5 or something...

And yet they'll still sell out every game. Is there a team in the entire league that drafts worse than Toronto? Kaberle and maybe Wellwood are their only draft picks that have panned out well in the past decade.

I'm assuming that you don't follow hockey, or know nothing about the Leafs. The Toronto media constantly rips on the Leafs. If the Leafs were to win the Cup this year (which is not even a remote possibility), the Toronto media would still find a way to rip the team apart.

Just do the rest of the division a favor and try to settle things in regulation.

Is there a team in the entire league that drafts worse than Toronto?

Anton Stralman
Jiri Tlusty
Justin Pogge
Tuukka Rask (who was traded to Boston)
Nikolai Kulemin(who plays in the RSL)

I guess you have to keep in mind that the Leafs have traded a lot of their draft picks away for Owen Nolan and Brian Leetch, so they had only their lower draft picks to rely on. All those players are draft picks since JFJ took over who you'll see in the next couple years. Stralman actually made the cut this year. Rask is a top tier goaltending prospect. Pogge looks like he's the future of Leafs goaltending. Kulemin has the potential of a second line forward. Tlusty could be a first liner.

Not the greatest core, but something to look forward to. I think JFJ's trades have been atrocious to say the least, but his drafting hasn't been too bad. Had he kept Tuukka Rask, the Leafs would have the best goaltending depth in the entire league.

Yet another struggle between good (Sens) and evil (Leafs) Though, as a Sens fan, I am a little concerned with Gerber being in net. However, both of the Leafs goalies are back ups too, so I guess it's a wash ;)
Should be fun stuff! Gotta love the back to back games!

I look forward to another mediocre season where the Leafs try and sell Nik Can'tropov as a first line player and miss the playoffs because they couldn't win one more shoot out.

Anton Stralman made the cut, and will be playing for the Leafs this season.

Tuukka Rask and Justin Pogge will most definitely be playing in the NHL within the next 2-3 years. Goaltenders take a long time to develop, hence why both Boston and Toronto would not start their franchise goaltenders until they are fully ready.

Jiri Tlusty is going to be playing for the Marlies this season, and could be called up to the Leafs sometime this season.

When is the first Ottawa Buffalo game?

Not until Nov 15th.

Looking at the schedule now. Look at Buffalo's last 10 games of the season:

MARCH OPPONENT
Sat. 15 at Toronto
Wed. 19 Tampa Bay
Fri. 21 Toronto
Tue. 25 Ottawa
Thu. 27 at Ottawa
Fri. 28 Montreal
Sun. 30 Boston

APRIL OPPONENT
Tue. 1 at Toronto
Thu. 3 at Montreal
Sat. 5 at Boston

Yeesh. I like rivalry games as much as the next guy, but nine out of the last ten are divisional games. That's ridiculous.

They need to do something about the unbalanced schedule.

Great - the two biggest attention whore teams in the league are playing each other, so the rest of the country has to stop to acknowledge this momentous event.

I don't think that drafting is the Leafs problem, it's trading away those picks or prospects for veterans at the end of their careers.

If they had have held on to a few of those propects or picks they could have a good team by now, but all the fruits of those trades have all left or retired. It's the "win now" philosophy of MLSE, with the emphsis on the Entertainment.

My Habs learnt the hard way to draft better, they are just now coming out of the dark age in terms of their drafting. And it'll be a few more years until they are top contenders.

tom servo bit me: Holy cow, the NHL preview is the lead story on ESPN.com right now.

Like I said in a thread yesterday, it seems to me that ESPN has really ramped up and expanded their hockey coverage in recent weeks, compared to last year.

There might be some truth to the rumors that ESPN and the NHL are in negotiations to bring a package of games back to ESPN.

Apparently there is already a lead wide verbal agreement to change the schedule. They just can't officially do it until the next GM meeting.

I would like the Maple Leafs to do well. Right up until about ten games before the end of the season, when they choke, go on a losing streak, and miss the playoffs, narrowly beat out by a plucky Montreal team.

Flashman73: Raycroft is starting in the Leafs net - has Toskala been a disaster already?

All I know is that Toskala started the preseason game against the Sabres last Wednesday, and he got shelled 7-2. Toskala did not look good. Derek Roy had 6 points in that game, including a natural hat-trick.

I think spiral8 is right. The Leafs have two back-up goaltenders.

did you photoshop those yourself?

I only ask because they were rather good..and I was wondering if you would be able to photoshop the Leafs making the playoffs this year, or would that be impossible?

Raycroft is starting in the Leafs net - has Toskala been a disaster already?

He was a disaster in the pre-season but I think they beleive it would be better to start him on the road. The Leafs are going to get their doors blown off tonight and if its Toskala in net at home when it happens it would get very ugly, very quickly.

Better to let him start the next one in Ottawa. He already has the pressure of trying to adjust from coming from a good team that plays defense to the Leafs, why pile it on?

Flashman73: Raycroft is starting in the Leafs net - has Toskala been a disaster already?

Neither of them have been great in the pre-season. But the Leafs never really played any full lineup. Right or Wrong, Paul Maurice seemed to treat the pre-season as more of a tinkering stage. Seeing who would play well with who, giving a lot of youngsters a chance, and really letting a lot of the vets take a rest, or at least rotate.

The last game of the season against detroit, the Leafs lost 4-0, with Toskala in net, but they only dressed something like 5 of their returning players, while Detroit played their full line-up.

Having said that, personally I'd start Raycroft tonight, just because he has experience with opening night in the ACC. It's not an easy place to play in, especially opening night. Any soft goals are going to get a chorus of boos from the shiatty toronto home crowd. I wouldn't want a new goalie going through that when you can put in a guy who has already been through it. Plus I expect Paul Maurice wants to light a fire under Toskala for the follow up game against ottawa tomorrow night in Kanada.

No I didn't make those myself. I was going to make a congratulatory photoshop for Montreal for squeaking into the playoffs in the last game of the year last year but...well...you know how that turned out...

Sigh, nothing more pathetic than the Sens fans fixation with the Leafs. Sometimes I wish that the Sens would beat the Leafs in the playoffs, maybe then they'd get that monkey off their back and move on. If you think beating the Leafs is something to cheer about, you're aiming pretty low.

Ah, I just figured since your profile says you're from Montreal. I was going to photoshop the Sens winning the cup using pics of the last time they won it, but I can't find any good quality pics from 1927 :/
