Few people know that Helen Keller's daughter committed suicide.

It's true. I mean, you'd off yourself too if your name was "BLLLEAAARRARRARRRGH!!!"

how about having a man run in front of these car waving a red flag and rining a bell?

2007-10-03 06:48:28 AM
Regardless of whether the car is hybrid or not, blind people should not be driving.

Since this is going to end up being a Helen Keller joke thread, I might as well wade in.

What did Helen Keller say on the coldest day of the year? Nothing. She was wearing mittens.

Why is Helen Keller's leg yellow? Her dog is blind too.

There was an article in my local rag about people (who could see) complaining that the hybrid buses the city rolled out were dangerous for the same reasons.

I'm sure the ADA will step in on this one shortly and have people fined for driving quiet cars.

Cormee: Regardless of whether the car is hybrid or not, blind people should not be driving.

Reminds me of some years ago at a Ham radio group. They were laughing about one guy who had gotten his ham radio license through an easier test because he was blind.

They saw him driving a car a few weeks later.

My local McDonald's used to have a sign at the drive-through that read "WE HAVE BRAILLE MENUS". I recall it had really big letters so the blind people could see it.

2007-10-03 07:12:31 AM
If they get hit it's not like they're even going to get injured anyway... It would probably total the car.

Well in fairness to them, not everyone who is legally blind or who reads braille is 100% blind, a lot have really shiate vision, so that sign, regardless of how silly it may seem does have a legitimate place.

Yeah, I figured it was for the people who were driving the car to so they could get a menu for their blind passengers. Still, the first impression was made you go, "Hmmmmmm...."

/And yes those damn hybrids are too quiet, even for sighted pedestrians.

the only reason you don't hear about people gettin run over in hybrids is they can't get to high enough speeds in time.

Same thing goes for Braille keys on drive-through ATMs. Manufacturers are not going to set up an additional assembly line just so they produce one set of keys for drivers, and another for walkers. All of the machines get the same keys just so that people can shiat themselves when they drive up to one and go ZOMG!!! BRALliE!

Ya just can't make everyone happy. I get myself a car that gets 47 mpg (on my meter right now over the last 1700 miles) and puts out rainbows/unicorn farts and people still aren't happy.

As someone who is legally, but not completely, blind this is actually becoming more of a concern. Luckily, I don't do much walking around downtown where I live now, but when I was in college I had to cross streets all the time.
It might seem like a simple enough task, even when you have a little vision left; but when you have learned time and time again not to entirely trust what you're seeing (or not seeing)your sense of hearing comes to be very important.
Should hybrid cars be made to make more noise? No. Should all hybrids be scrapped so all we have are nice, noisy hummers and 75 cadillacs? Absolutely.
And yes, I am getting a kick out of these replies.
