I think you vastly overestimate the ability of random people off the streets to be competent in legal areas. There have been a lot of studies into this kind of thing, and huge numbers of people are more concerned with their own personal prejudices and demographics than the law. See, for example, how many black people still say OJ is innocent or that Michael Vick shouldn't be punished. The fact that a woman got a mostly female jury to say she deserves a lot of money doens't mean that much in terms of the truth of the case.
