(News.com.au)   Seventy-three percent of all people arrested for crimes in Australia test positive for marijuana. Wait a minute -- isn't NORML telling us that pot is harmless and doesn't lead to crime?   (news.com.au) divider line 349

phaedrusiszen: I've seen way too many shootouts over marijuana sales to want it in my neighborhood. That doesn't mean the blame belongs with the plant, it means the blame belongs with the policy. But that distinction won't help when it's my neighborhood involved. Sad but true.

During prohibition, there were shootouts between alcohol dealers. When was the last time you saw the Bud delivery guy shooting at the Miller delivery guy?

73 per cent of all ...

DUMA statistics also showed 83 per cent of female offenders and 82 per cent of male offenders...

Why do the Aussies hate compounds?

FTA: The data, compiled under the AIC's Drug Use Monitoring in Australia program (DUMA), shows a steady increase in the number of offenders testing positive to cannabis.

How many of these "offenders" were arrested for possession of cannabis? That would skew the figures just a little.

Cocaine is molecularly similar to caffeine. It has been used in places like Bolivia since antiquity. Unless you are not an outright prohibitionist, you make your distinctions about the rightful legality of a given substance on a pharmacological/pharmacognosological basis. And I doubt that Weaver95, or many others here, have much training in pharmacology or pharmacognosy.

let's see...pot is illegal so if you have it then you are breaking the law. People who break the law are called criminals. If a person doesn't see a problem with breaking one law chances are they won't see a problem with breaking another. Yep, pretty simple.

ha ha guy: Correlation may not mean causation, but 73% is a much higher proportion than the overall population.

It still doesn't mean anything as there is no information provided on which, if either, is the independant variable. Nor does it even attempt to rule out the possibility of other variables having any impact. It is, in fact, a completely useless statistic. Hell, it's less than useless. It's completely misleading and intellectually dishonest.

Funny how everyone seems to have missed this:

Officer-in-charge of the NT Police Drug and Alcohol policy unit Sgt Scott Mitchell said the statistics for cannabis use among Darwin offenders were not significantly different to the rest of Australia, but they were for alcohol.

Our cannabis figures aren't alarming (by comparison) but there's a significant difference in the alcohol figures," Sgt Mitchell said.

So, to spell it out for those who may not get it, marijuana use isn't even correlated with increased crime, while alcohol use is.

Anyone who doesn't realize why these numbers are the way they are is a fool. Smoking weed doesn't make you cause crime (besides the crime of smoking weed) any more than drinking does. In fact, I'd say it causes much less. Because it is illegal though, and because of the ridiculous propaganda against it, most people are scared to try it. Sadly, because people who would commit other crimes are much less swayed by the illegality of marijuana than the straight and narrow types, these numbers lead people to stupidly believe that weed causes crime.

If anything, make cigarettes illegal.

If you're committing a crime, you likely have little respect for the law. If you have little respect for the law, you have probably tried pot at one point or another.

Just saying.

Perhaps criminals are more likely to break drug laws than the general population is. Doesn't that seem more likely than pot causing crime?

Subby is farking retarded. I'll bet 100% of them have taken a shiat in the last week. So does taking a shiat lead to crime?

100% > 73% = obviously

That's correct, pot does not cause crime.

2007-10-01 12:11:27 AM
Has anyone mentioned yet that marijuana is essentially harmless and that all the negatives associated with it are either lies ("it's addictive") or only exist because of it's prohibition ("sales support criminals/gangs"). Because just in case, I thought I should mention it.

Seriously, I think this "moral majority" thing is insane. How about we start a "rational majority" or a "sane majority". Doesn't have the same ring to it but I'm sure someone will find a way to come up with a more creative slogan...

2007-10-01 12:11:52 AM
from TFA It's 73 percent of people arrested in Darwin, not all of Australia. Also how many are arrested for marijuana charges? Gee someone in posession of marijuana has marijuana in their system? There's a shocker.

This, and Evo Morales: "Coca is not cocaine." Coca tea, or simply chewing the leaves is a stimulant somewhere on the level of coffee. But, also mainly, legalize Cannabis sativa cultivation: it has too much industrial, commercial, medicinal, food and recreational potential to be kept illicit.

SilentStrider: correlation is not causation, subby.

Assumably, they have a reason to think the correlation is significant, thus, you know, the article?

//It's more about the recent increase in cannabis use in criminal circles than anything else, actually.
//I'm betting they're suspecting a distributor takign the form of organized crime, rather than thinking there's that high an incidence of psychotic tendencies or caring about the drug itself.
