We had a prison ship in the UK for years. It was called HMP Weir, and it turned out to be too expensive to maintain.
It was a heap of crap though.

This is a great idea, get all the convicted rapists and murders on the boat. Then one night, have the boat 'accidently' capsize killing all on board. Brilliant.

I thought the U.S. was the only country with overcrowded prisons. At least, that is what I keep reading on the internets.

Aren't ships kind of expensive to build or maintain? Wouldn't a building on land be cheaper and easier? What's the advantage of a ship; is it a mobile prison, and how would that be better?

2007-09-29 09:04:52 AM
The move was revealed as figures yesterday put the prison population at a record 81,135.

Amateurs. The US has twenty-five times that amount in jail.

By a lonely prison wall, I heard a young girl calling
"Michael, they have taken you away
For you stole Trevelyan's corn
So the young might see the morn'
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay"

Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry

By a lonely prison wall, I heard a young man calling
"Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free
Against the famine and the crown
I rebelled, they cut me down
Now you must raise our child with dignity"

Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry

By a lonely harbour wall, she watched the last star falling
As the prison ship sailed out against the sky
For she'll live in hope and pray for her love in Botany Bay
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry

Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry

From Wikipedia: "The United Kingdom has one of the highest rates of incarceration in Western Europe: In 2005 an average of 139 people in every 100,000 were in prison (although this is far short of the 714 per 100,000 in the United States).[1]"

not quite 25 times, but you aren't counting per population. Still too damn high though.

I've got an idea to help with our prison population. I'm not sure if potheads are really lazy or if it is propaganda, but how about sending all the drug users who are in jail to a "weed barge" where they can grow it and smoke it all day, people can't pretend to be offended, and they can fish for food and profit(if not too lazy).

2007-09-29 09:31:50 AM
I like the cruise ship idea mentioned earlier. Make sure it's a ship that has norovirus problems. Just a little extra punishment for them.

A pirate walks into a bar, and the barkeep says "Excuse me, cap'n, but did you know that you've got your ship's wheel stuck in your pantaloons?"

"Arrr!" says the pirate, "It be drivin' me nuts!"

Besides, if they stick 'em on a ship, all they'll have to look forward to is Rum, Sodomy, and The Lash......

Given San Francisco's crime rates, I doubt "Rum, Sodomy, and The Lash" would deter much.

Another way for Britaain to ease overcrowding in its jails would be to simply become more like the civilized countries of western and northern Europe who only have to jail 0.1% to 0.05% of their poulation to maintain a reasonably safe and secure society and less like the USA who jail ten times as many of their citizens and up to a full percent of its population depending on the state and still don't manage to be any safer or freer of crime.

"I thought the U.S. was the only country with overcrowded prisons. At least, that is what I keep reading on the internets."

Nah, a few places are crowded, but any redneck town is glad to let you build a prison to give jobs to the redneck citizens who are just barely qualified to be prison guards. No shortage of jails, basically.

We just have more prisoners per capita than any other civilized country.

With just 81,915 prison places available in the entire country, it means there is now room for only 780 more lags.

They'd better get their applications in soon!...maybe apply early decision
