I'll be damned. I would totally expect this to come from San Francisco. This thread still has potential, though...

This is what I came to say. Anyone can run for either, apparently. It's up to those who voted that decided who won.

I can understand why she's mad. Its not that a guy won, it's that she lost to a guy who ran as a joke. I mean, really. That says how much people like her right there, doesn't it?

After reading that article, I can't help but feel that somewhere in there, the reverse race card might be in play. Might not be, but I get that feeling....

Never liked a Brittany I've met; the ones I've met seem to be uniformly biatchy and deserving of a swift kick in the ass (this one being no exception).

I really can't fathom why people give a crap about being Homecoming King/Queen. Hopefully that's not the pinnacle of your life.

Girls being defeated by a dude for the title of homecoming queen says all there needs to be said I guess.

When I was a Sophomore the assholes in my class voted for the 6' tall "fat girl." It completely humiliated her but when they called her name the rest of the school stood up and clapped for her.

I'm glad I didn't go to that High School. There must be a lot of girls beat down by the ugly stick for this to happen.

It's something that can sadly only be said once in a while, but kudos to the school board for not being dicks about the whole thing.

A guy runs for homecoming queen, but he's straight. Hm.

See, when the first version of this story ran 30 years ago, it was really unusual for a gay high school student to be out of the closet. So, when a gay guy ran for homecoming queen, it was playing on the traditional meaning of "queen" vs. the gay-slang meaning of it.

But this guy... is straight.

So the humor lies in the fact that...

Hm.

I can understand why the other contestants are miffed. All the girls in the school who think the homecoming queen candidates are biatches voted for the guy, and split the vote among the male voters. So of course the guy won.

FriarReb98, I'm not sure how "reverse" racism comes into play here. My wife went to U City, and my in-laws teach there. The student body is 80% non-white.

"It's no big deal," said Coleman, the homecoming king, although he was unsure how the traditional king-queen dance would play out.

The school body voted for Zaggy, but he may have upset some students who consider the homecoming court no laughing matter.

This is my favorite part. Cry all you want and take it seriously but if the majority of the student body will vote for some random guy over a girl they must think the whole thing is a joke.

I bet this hardly ever happens in Iran.

Brittany McNairy, 18, also ran for homecoming queen. And although the dance's theme is "Our Night in the Limelight," she feels robbed of her chance.

"I was mad," she said. "I don't think he should have run. A lot of senior girls were mad."

STFU, and just keep warm with the knowledge for the rest of your life that, when all was said and done, everyone wanted a guy to be homecoming queen over your sorry ass.

GibbyTheMole: I never understood the importance of being a homecoming queen/king/whatever. Other than a meaningless popularity contest, WTF is it, really?

That's all it is. But it does get the kids used to the idea of meaningless, arbitrary hierarchy, which is a major feature of the adult world, so it does have that going for it.

I never understood the point of homecoming either. Former students come back all the time. I guess it's just a lame excuse to wear weird clothes and waste an afternoon (or even day) at a pep rally and Student vs. Teacher Volleyball games. Woohoo! What fun!

I can understand why she's upset. For many people high school is the pinnacle of their existence, and they spend the rest of their lives remembering how awesome they were in high school.

The rest of us move on with our lives.

What about the all-important dance? Best scenario: King and "queen" step onto the dance floor into the spotlight, shake hands and find their dates. If they actually dance, this whole thing is farked up.

Gotta admire the guy for wrecking Brittany's Peak Life Experience.

The funny thing is that my sister is like that. She's tracked down people we went to school with, and given them my email address, and is then confused as to why I don't keep in touch with them. Christ, I haven't talked to most of these people in 15 to 20 years! If I haven't talked to you in 2 decades, don't be surprised if I don't jump at the chance to fill you in on what's happening in my life.

For many people high school is the pinnacle of their existence, and they spend the rest of their lives remembering how awesome they were in high school.

That's just sad.

But it *is* kind of entertaining to visit the ol' home town and accidentally bump into an old classmate who thought he (or she) was The Shiat in HS and now stocks produce in a supermarket for a living. Heh.

That was topped only by the guy who staples little wooden boxes together all day every day. For his dad. While living at home with his parents. ...The exact same "job" and living arrangement he had in high school, roughly 20 years ago. LOL

Hey, I live in University City (or U City as its known around these parts), and you'd be surprised at just how diverse this place is. Its like the San Francisco of the midwest. Its a very cool little suburb of St. Louis that boasts a fun area known as The Loop, which is Delmar Avenue (not really a loop, but whatever).

Anyway, I was actually surpriused that this was just a joke to this kid, as it would seem only natural to have him be gay and be proclaimed the queen.

Having said that, asshats, all of 'em.

Actually, the mother of one of my best friends in school is the principal there, or was. It's pretty close by.

My own homecoming meant nothing to me. Went to it briefly, stag, and left after the first hour utterly bored.

at my school nobody ran for those things.

it was a totally open ballot.

you could not opt out.
