I'm old.

But meh.

Watching Star Trek is as boring as going to church.

2007-09-29 12:06:14 AM
Well, in the New York area, it aired on October 5th. I remember this because my brother was born the next morning.

Apparently, saucer separation induces labor.

/God, I feel old...

2007-09-29 12:14:23 AM
I remember getting so excited for the show to start....

I was 19.

Kinda scary when you can say "20 years ago, I was..."

2007-09-29 12:14:36 AM
In other news, a baby born the same day Top Gun premiered in theatres is now old enough to drink.

Jesus.

I was 10 when the show first started.

I REALLY feel old right now.

Twenty years ago, I could legally buy booze for the first time. Coincidence? I think not!

Hate to admit it, but Encounter at Farpoint was an awful episode.

Much of Season 1 was hit-or-miss. Things worked pretty well by Season 2, though and for the most part got better every season.

Overall, ST:TNG was more than just a worthy successor to the original series. Many nerds will disagree with me, but I think it was a lot better than the original series.

2007-09-29 12:26:09 AM
It hasn't aged as well as the original.

Riche: Much of Season 1 was hit-or-miss.

The characters were cardboard-ish and the dialog was very forced, I think, in an attempt to emulate a lot of the original series' campy appeal.

They did get MUCH better tho..

My all-time favorite was the one where Picard lived an entire life on a long-extinct planet, thanks to a probe's mind-control beam thingie..

Twenty years ago I was 35. TNG was first broadcast on my birthday.

seasons 1 & 2 were, as previously said, hit or miss.
3 though, the show really took off. Best of Both Worlds pts 1 & 2, Yesterdays Enterprise, awesome episodes.

2007-09-29 12:33:39 AM
And it's still the best out of the all Star Treks.

The first season was awful, and painful to watch. Dumping Tasha Yar? Good move. Depussifying Worf? Great move. But it was more that the quality of the writing and development of the characters just got to where it needed to be. The Klingon succession and Borg episodes were near-genius, and better than anything else in any of the various series.

Even Wesley had a pretty decent subplot with that Academy thing...

Let it be known that this thread has tipped me into my middle-age crisis.

The admin in my department had not yet been born when STTNG came out.

Time to go shop for a Corvette.

I was 3. Suck it, grandpas.

2007-09-29 12:34:47 AM
Man, 20 years... I bet Wil is going to come out with a new book like that Brady Bunch kid.

!

Now taking bets for who he will claim to have had a homosexual relationship with while filming Star Trek.

Haven't seen the Wheaton tag in a while.

And TNG is awesome.

2007-09-29 12:35:43 AM
Oh my dear Borg, I am oldish. I was 16. So, theoretically, if I can drive a '78 Ford Fairmont staion wagon, I can...um...watch a new Star Trek franchise. Ah, screw it I got nuthin'...

/EXCEPT FOUR LIGHTS!!!!!

SilentStrider: seasons 1 & 2 were, as previously said, hit or miss.

Yes, hearing Picard shout "NOW HEAR THIS" in the pilot episode was painful.

Troi's first hairstyle was hideous.

And Wesley was just damned annoying during those first few seasons. Thank God they fixed his character down the road...

2007-09-29 12:36:01 AM
I remeber watching it... I was 10. My Mom and her boyfriend both made a pretty big deal of it. Weird, the memories that it brings back.

I'm inclined to approve of you selection of episode -- I found this one to be very moving -- quality science fiction.

However, Yesterday's Enterprise was clearly the best IMHO.

Between that and all my favorite songs being played on classic rock stations, I will admit that I am old. And I hate it when kids ride their skyrockets in the middle of my federation approved warp 5 zones.

2007-09-29 12:38:53 AM
... I was barely three years old when this aired? This explains why I keep having arguments with my father about me not remembering watching most of the series, let alone the first episode.

"Inner Light" is still the best episode, hands down. I nearly killed a Jehovah's Witness when they came to the door half way through it once. Screaming "Shakah, when the walls fell!" in someone's face, and then slamming the door is priceless.

/wow
//I'm going to go re-watch all of Next Gen now, excuse me

Although I must say, when Picard had a crush on the new science officer (stellar cartography, anyone?), I shat myself in mortal terror that the show was going the way of the Lifetime Channel. Arg.
