FTFA: "A HOUSE built on top of an abandoned pool of cyanide"

WTF?

"Villagers from Yangping in the city of Lingbao, Henan province, had gathered in the house yesterday to discuss funeral arrangements for a young man who was found dead there at daybreak"

It's not irony, but it's something.

Given the meteoric and half-assed rise of Chinese industry, I'm thinking there are going to be a lot more stories about this crap.

Welcome to industrial feudalism, China.

1. I can't really think of a worse place to build your house.
2. Nine people died from running into a house where a man died because the poison under the house, killed him.

Maybe we need a China tag, and make it out of lead.

The scary thing is, without the environmental laws conservatives hate so fiercely, we'd be reading stories like this going on in the USA, too.

When they try to take their SAT's?

Whose genius idea was it to build a house / shack over a pool of cyanide? That is a whole level of stupid right by itself. Extra stupid is for the friends and neighbours to gather about the body of some dead guy in said house waiting for the inevitable to happen.

The scary thing is, without the environmental laws conservatives hate so fiercely, we'd be reading stories like this going on in the USA, too.

It's not the laws conservatives hate. It's the utter lack of enforcement. EPA regulations aren't about protection; they're about programs. How many different little programs can we get businesses and municipalities to put into place? Organizations get so wrapped up in the establishment of the programs and meeting the conditions set down by the programs that the important thing - the protection and enrichment of the environment, is lost in the shuffle.
