I guess the US will just keep pissing in the wind.

I hope you don't expect anyone to take you seriously when you eventually win a WTO ruling... if you ever win a WTO ruling.

That's globalization for you. It's a good thing the dollar's falling, because we're gonna get hammered with tarriffs.

The WTO is a wonderful organization that everyone should listen to. Unless they decide against the US, in which case feel free to ignore them. The US certainly will.

It's about time globalization biatch slaps big US corperations.
Way to go Antigua, pirate that stuff, and sell it to Americans.

I love how the US gov't touts free trade and such then ignores the WTO, and screws with everyone else. Oh wait - I hate that.

I'm looking forward to them ignoring our intellectual property: cheap movies, games, OS's, etc for the win.

Well they better do, or the US will 'spread democracy' to them.

Wait why do the American People need to pay these fines? Funny shouldn't it be the corporations that run that crap be paying for it. They violated WTO law, they should pay for it. No I don't care if they go bankrupt.

Uh... right. Want to try reading the article again before you come ask for help? I don't even know where to start with that.

the Antiguans have been threatening to suspend their intellectual property obligations to the US. That in turn ultimately caught the attention of powerful Silicon Valley and Hollywood interests,

A nice retort, even if they'll never catch up to China.

I'm sure you're both sitting in front of your computer anxiously awaiting a thread to appear on Fark so you can sit down your Cheetos and rabidly post about how evil corporations are. However, if either of you had even a miniscule amount of back-story to this article, you'd know that the "corporations" aren't the problem here. The "corporations" didn't violate any WTO "law".

The problem is that the U.S. government started cracking down on on-line gambling, while still allowing U.S. based casinos to offer remote gambling services. This equates to a form of "protectionism", which caused Antigua to file a WTO complaint.

But, hey. Don't let any sort of fact stop you from ranting about those "eeebil corporations", Dumbasses.

So what you are trying to tell us is Fark is cheaper than therapy?

Uncoolest: So what you are trying to tell us is Fark is cheaper than therapy?

Sometimes, yes!

The U.S. cracking down on online gambling was thoroughly stupid in and of itself. Add on to the fact that many people are within driving distance to a real casino and it becomes even more stupid.

I have no idea what it is about casinos/gambling that gets politicians all frothing at the mouth. Around here (southern IL, STL area) the rule is that the casinos have to be on water. So they build elaborate landlocked moats to meet the requirements. This seems to placate the puritans who hate gambling in its many forms.

I'm glad to see Antigua take the U.S. to task on this one.

Although Antigua has roundly defeated its lumbering, puritanical northern neighbor

I actually got a headache from my eyes rolling after I read that sentence

You don't think America is puritanical?

There is definitely a voting (or campaign donating) population segment that really really really doesn't like adults being responsible for their own actions. Politicians have to bend over and take it to keep themselves in office, and rational adults get screwed. Now the 2 parts of our economy that are still thriving, are going to get farked.

If America had to pay fines on all the WTO violations it makes there wouldn't be enough left to keep that pesky war thing going. Lucky the US believes in free trade so it can make money from global free trade...

Sorry but think Globalization is harmful to the people of earth and do not believe in intellectual property rights.

Rotskied. The problem isn't with casinos, it's with the Interstate Horseracing Act.

/OK, it's been a year and a few months since I read the opinions; there might have been something about lottery tickets too.

Whoops, possibly not rotskied. If by remote gambling services from casinos, you meant the placing of bets and wagers on horse races in compliance with the IHRA.
