Phil Hartman as Sinatra is my fave...

Subby used the word "greatest" in reference to Martin Short? Epic fail, dude.

Martin Short is about as funny as a brain tumor. Rather, I should say "Martin Short's one and only character, who he recycles continuously into unfunny variations, is about as funny as a brain tumor".

Him and Robin Williams both need a new schtick.

The Question is Moot was awesome.

"Who get the car?"
"I get the car"
"Why?"
"That question is moot."

Greatest SNL Game Show Skit ever.... Jackie Rogers Jr.'s $100,000 Jackpot Wad.

Even if all the Alex Trebek/Sean Connery "Jeopardy" sketches were somehow erased, Martin Short's lame albino impression still wouldn't be in the running for greatest SNL game show sketch.

2007-09-26 01:03:23 PM
That is so NOT the best game show sketch ever on SNL.

... I'll take anal bum cover ...

Even the worst jeopardy sketch was better than Martin Short.

The Christopher Guest part alone would put it up there. And Jim Belushi as Captain Kangaroo???

This was one funny sketch.

I made an audio tape back in the 90s with my favorite TV and movie quotes, the Christopher Guest/Billy Crystal part was on it.

Awesome. Bruce Willis bonus.

Oh the irony--she is so sweet.

While people argue SCTV vs. SNL at another thread, this is SNL with a character from SCTV.

I honestly suspect those who bash Martin Short are clueless to the character(s) he is lampooning.(probably don't even know who Sammy Davis Jr. was either)

The genius of Martin Short's characters was his combination of both real and fictional elements.

I don't know, I always got it, but I just found Jackie Rogers Jr. to, well, suck as a character.

That one SCTV, when Martin Short was the rich steel industrialist who put up the money for the Melonville Philharmonic (and him getting drunk at the opening-night concert) was friggin' great.

("You shower and I'll show 'er!")

One doesn't need some special insider knowledge to fully appreciate that Martin Short is indeed unfunny.

/familiar with his "parodies"
//i'd argue that familiarity makes it even more unfunny.

If I have to watch Martin Short do that stupid dance with his knees glued together one more time, I'm going to go on a 6-state killing spree.
How come every one of his characters does that dance?

"I suppose you could do better than that, to meet Pat Sajak?"

Shoot him and put us all out of our misery.

With that said, the Christopher Guest character and Billy do a great job.

That's what I noticed right away.

So for those of you going on about the comedic genius of Martin Short, go find a paper clip. Just as entertaining, more versatile, and easily replenished, 'cause they all do just about the same thing in slightly different ways.

Why would you insult a paper clip?

LEAVE PAPER CLIPS ALONE!

For my money, the one SNL skit that still gets me every time is the Pete Schweaty NPR lady skits. In fact, I'm going to go look for that now. Thanks bad Martin Short clip!

Regarding Martin Short: Ed Grimley Jr. was very, very funny.
the rest? not so much.

The best game show spoof was "Food, Sex, or Car" with Rob Lowe.

"A Circus Peanut, Bea Arthur, or a '76 pacer?"
"Circus Peanut?"
"CORRECT!!"

/Would actually watch that as a real game show...

"That one SCTV, when Martin Short was the rich steel industrialist who put up the money for the Melonville Philharmonic (and him getting drunk at the opening-night concert) was friggin' great"

I think his name was Brad Allen and his company was called SCRAP CO.

He is totally wasted and he stupidly insults the conductor--

"...are you REALLY necessary up there?"

And I do humbly apologize if my way above statement offended anyone but I do in fact insist that a person must indeed must have certain knowledge in order to "get" certain jokes.

Case and point:

The SEINFELD episode where Elaine has to go to Burma to confront Peterman. If you have NEVER seen Apocalypse Now you will NOT understand the joke. I wish I had a dime for every time I have had to explain to a Seinfeld fan why Peterman repeats-- "the horror...the horror" at the end.

If you don't like Martin Short, fine.

I however think that he NAILS most of his characters.

Irving Cohen especially.

I too think that Martin Short sucks. But he was funny in Three Amigos, and the SNL skit as the syncronized swimmer that couldn't swim.

/I know you! I know you!

And I would just like to add Bob LobLaw's Law Blog is one of the greatest fark handles ever.

thank you subby

I for one agree - it's not just about Short, the Billy Crystal stuff is good and the Christopher Guest stuff is awesome.

2007-09-26 05:28:44 PM
But he was funny in Three Amigos

The Three Amigos was a so-so comedy with Martin Short being one of the least funny aspects of it. Steve Martin carried the film for those other two who apparently just showed up for the check.

Garth Brooks, "Old French Whore!" (pops)

I suggest "Common Knowledge" as the best SNL game show skit. Jeanne Kirkpatrick matching wits with American public high school seniors, not for what is true, but what they believe is true.

Most recent SNL skits = taking something that's amusing for about 2 seconds and dragging it out for ten minutes.

Corksoakers, ha, ha, I get it.

Best SNL skit featuring Martin Short

I love the scene in The Three Amigos when they are in the village and Chevy Chase says:

"Do you have anything here other than Mexican food?"

And the scene when the bandits give that gay looking sweater to El Guapo for his birthday.

Geez--that movie was goddamned hilarious.

2007-09-26 08:26:12 PM
Whats that stuff on Bruce Willis's head?

Bill Murray as The Whipmaster

This one cracks me up

Martin Short is not, nor has ever been, funny. I almost peed my pants when I saw "I know you! I know you!" for the first time, but I'm convinced it was something else that caused it.

You just read my mind.

When the video started and I heard that stupid music I just knew Martin Short was going to come out doing that dance. Who thinks this is funny??

Always liked "Seinfeld Jeopardy" (or is it "Stand Up and Win"?), with Seinfeld as host and three Seinfeld imitators trying to answer the question in the style of Jerry Seinfeld:

"And what is the DEAL with Oprah? She's fat, she's thin, she's fat, she's thin... why can't she pick a body and stay with it?"

2007-09-27 10:17:01 PM
when martin short is jiminy glick, and he's getting the heimlich maneuver as he's chocking on a donut...and he still reaches for more donuts. i was laughing so hard i actually started to cry...

Love it!

Mark me as 'pro' "The Question is Moot" and Farley Japanese game show as well.

I'm not a SnL snob that will tell you X is the greatest but that skit sucked balls.
