How does a Disney star "sell out"?

Wait, you meant tickets. My bad.

2007-09-26 11:39:30 AM
who?

God forbid you teach your children that they can't always get what they want when they want it.

And I also love the woman who bought extra brokered tickets that SHE is then going to scalp to raise money for the trip. But when she does it, I'm sure it's Good and Holy.

A fool and his money are easily parted.

Anybody dumb enough to spend a penny on a ticket to watch the most recent flavor of the week to be churned out by the teen pop star goblins deserves to be beaten about the head with numerous devices. Anyone who complains about the cost and is still dumb enough to do it should be shot.

Doesn't she just lip-sync to the track?

Our daughter wanted to go, so I logged on to Ticketmaster and kept F5ing til tickets were available at 11am on a Saturday. They were sold out immediately. I was a bit shocked that this chick is that popular, I'm also surprised that she hasn't opened up more shows.

I am curious how these ticket brokers are getting them so quickly.

2007-09-26 12:16:54 PM
Ha, that's funny. Don't these people realize that this has been going on for years? The general public can not get face value tickets, and if TicketBastard and their 'broker' associates and all the online sites like StubHub and RazorGator keep lobbying to change the laws around to suit their interests, then the public will never get their hands on tickets for anything at face value. Well, maybe a Royals game.

Yeah, that's the Rolling Stones again. We're talking about Disney. Pay attention.

Bucky Katt who?

The Achy Breaky Heart guy had a daughter and sold her to Disney.

They have lists of credit card numbers and friends who work at Ticketmaster. It's a simple as that. The worker gets a kickback and everyone's happy except the customer.

Some are also managing to write code to get past the website and access the sale prior to the 'onsale' time, but it's the same idea except you don't have to pay the person working at TM to put your order through.

Why does it warrant a 100 percent markup? Because people will f'n pay it that's why!!

Plus it's not just waking up early, they have the tickets in hand well before you can even click that little "Submit" button and enter the stupid code that comes up on the next page.

here in KC the show at the new Sprint Center sold out immediately as well.

Kicker - it seats 18,500 for basketball. For this concert, drop that to 11,000, subtract 3,500 for season ticket holders, 4,000 for fan club seats, leaving 4,000 on sale to the public.

The media has been full of crying tweeners and their angry soccer moms ever since.

Being a FUN dad and being fiscally responsible are two entirely different things.

1) Children need to learn to live with disappointment. It will go a long way towards becoming a healthy and productive adult.

2) If scalpers have so much luck making money off these tickets, then the ticket prices should be raised in the first place. Econ 101.

As far as my twenty-nine year old self can figure out, this Hannah Montana character is some kind of Disney show that 'lives the Rock Star life.' Or, to translate it for my Gen-X brethren, it's kinda like paying to see the kids from Saved by the Bell play in a rock band and expect to get the same respect.

I used to think that 'kids are dumb' was an oldster conceit, but after this...?

I am pretty fiscally responsible, and I would spend a penny for my daughter to see Hannah Montana.

Oooh, pardon me for complaining about opportunistic assholes. I was mistakenly under the impression that buying something solely for the purpose of selling it for more money was illegal. I'll see you all at the next "Gas rises $.50 per gallon" thread so I can remind you that you don't REALLY NEED to own a car.

If you're a veteran musician, you realize it's a lost cause. Italians are world-reknowned fence jumpers.

I wouldnt pay $10 to see either one of them. Gimme my local metal and crust-punk shows for $5 and the slightly rarer good folk that passes through here.

Rolling Stones are just reanimated corpses wandering through another repitition of their hits. Blech.

You paid. You'll get over it.

FTW. As a musician I am wholy in favor of selling tickets at the market value if the money goes to artists, production crew, promoters, and venues. What I don't want to see is the ticket money going to someone who has no part in putting on the show (ticketmaster included).

Heh, Ticketmaster should go the way of Priceline (Captain Kirk says name your own price!)

Enh, not always. When I was a kid, my dad spent 80 bucks a seat to take me and my sister to go see Jesus Christ Superstar. (We were desperate to see it. Teenagers are weird.) We were living below the poverty level, so this was a freaking fortune to spend on something so 'silly'. But what we learned from the experience is that if one is fiscally responsible, one can put the funds aside to be able to afford to have experiences that one might otherwise have missed out on.

2007-09-26 01:33:29 PM
This is the best study I've read on the economics of ticket scalping.

Best line: "Owners and promoters may want true fans in the seats, or they may want to create a particular atmosphere, for instance an event for the entire family (Nager 1985). Creating a situation where not only the rich and powerful receive all the tickets generates positive morale effects. So producers often may want to control who among the public is buying tickets."

Too bad she isn't really pregnant.

Those parents who complain are probably the same people whose office gives them free tickets and awesome seats to the *insert popular band here* concert. Then they show up late, stay long enough to hear the one or two really popular songs, and then leave.
