Yeah, I know it's private property, etc.

But, I want to know from someone honest what motivation, other than racial discrimination, could make these people feel it's necessary to ban patrons based on their dreadlocks?

They hate dreds, I've seen white people with dreds. If they don't allow any race in with dreds, then where's the discrimination?

brifar: yeah once a week isnt bigotry dro....its unsanitary.....

I've dated two women with dreads, and they both washed their hair daily. Eyewitness testimony.

There was a third who sat in front of me in a class in college, and she always smelled great--I never was lucky enough to shower with her, but her hair was always wet. She's why, to this day, I don't know anything about Kirkegaard.

Women with dreads are hot.

I haven't read the whole thread so I apologize if I'm repeating someone here, but: I thought that the way to make dreadlocks was basically to not wash your hair for a long, long time? If I ran a bar, or any indoor establishment, I'd prefer not to have customers who haven't washed their hair in several months. Especially in a hot, humid place like southeastern Virginia.

I love how the ACLU thinks it's race related. I've seen many white people with nappay ass dread locks, and I bet they weren't allowed in either.

Won't the ACLU have to prove that no white people were denied because of the hair to have anything to base their lawsuit on?

I can see the rationale behind banning certain clothing, since only certain cultural groups wear them. But hairstyles, especially dreadlocks? Plenty of people that have them, of all colors, don't belong to the "hip hop" subculture.

And unlike a knee-length oversize jersey, you can't take dreadlocks off.

Can someone explain why in this day & age it's still illegal to refuse service to people for any reason, including race? It would seem logical that refusing business to an enormous portion of the population would be detrimental to the success and profitability of a business, unless the system is inferring some type of inferiority on the part of minorities and that they require special protection because of it.

FlashLV: Won't the ACLU have to prove that no white people were denied because of the hair to have anything to base their lawsuit on?

No, they'd just have to show that the standards will apply to vastly more blacks than whites.
Take, for example, a club rule that no one with lips over a certain size were allowed in. Now, if that let them kick out 1% of white people and 99% of black people, that would be discriminatory, even though they still denied a few whites entry.

Hairstyle is a choice. So are tattoos. Neither are protected against discrimination.

It shouldn't be too difficult to find two Caucasians or Hispanics with dreads that were denied entry. That would go a long way towards his defense.

Of course, the real power of the ACLU (and the DoJ of course) is to outspend their opponents. "We will keep you in court for years and make you spend hundreds of thousands in legal fees if you don't comply." That's called using force.

homarjr: tweekster: Many clubs discriminate on appearance because they want well dressed people to be the standard in their establishment.

Not sure if you read my story above, but a lot of places will come up with excuses regardless of what you're wearing.

I've worn suits to clubs and been denied entry, and it's common knowledge that it's a race issue, just the club will use some lame explanation why I'm not allowed in.

I am sure it absolutely happens based on race and the dress code is just used as an excuse. I was just saying that there are also many legit and legal applications of dress codes. It is good to know that my favorite club does not practice this. Considering milwaukee is still pretty segregated it is readily apparent that the owner does not share this belief. Which is actually quite surprising since this is a club for trance music which doesn't have the most ethnically diverse audience.

Re: dirty dreads That's been addressed, repeatedly. You're wrong.

Good to know. Still, if a bar owner in Virginia Beach wants to set a dress code, he should have the right to do so. (And to see if he's really trying to hide racism, do this: find some long-haired white woman and have her fix her hair Bavarian-style, with the thick braids wrapped around her head. See if she's still kept out under the "no braids" clause.)

(Additional thought: is he maybe trying to make his bar appeal to military types? There's a LOT of them in that corner of Virginia.)

2007-09-26 12:10:33 PM
"You have to shave your head when you don't want dreadlocks anymore."

False statement. You don't even have to cut your hair when you want to take the dreadlocks out. Here are the ways to take dreadlocks out:

1. You can cut or shave your head if you don't care about your hair, this is the fastest way to remove the dreadlocks.

2. Cut the deadlocks until they are about 3 inches long and then soak the rest of the dreadlocks in VO5 conditioner and comb them out. This will leave you with about 4 or 5 inches of hair.

3. You love your hair and want to keep it. Just soak the dreadlocks in VO5 conditioner and comb them out, it may take a couple hours but you will get to keep your hair. Don't worry if you lose a lot of hair while you are combing the dreadlocks out, this is hair that would have fallen out in the day-to-day hair
removal cycle. The only reason you still have it is because you had dreadlocks and dreadlocks keep the hair all knotted together.

people are so quick to cry racism. I watched a group of 4 white guys get rejected from a bar one by one, for various reasons (it was pretty funny actually) First one had baggy shorts, second one's chain was too long, third was wearing a plain colored t shirt (gang thing?) and fourth had a hat. i didn't see them running to the ACLU.

tweekster: The same reason why many clubs won't allow people with mullets in, or mohawks, hell some places won't allow certain facial piercings, or visible tattoos.
==========================================================

Please provide a link to the "no mullets" club.

(Here is the part in these threads where I pre-emptively debunk the ignorant responses that are sure to come.)

Here is the problem. I know there are white hippies. I understand that there are people who could agree with this rule without being card carrying members of the White Knights.

However, you all are constantly asking black people to give the benefit of the doubt. Things are NEVER as racist as we interpret them to be. We are ALWAYS supposed to accept that there was no malicious intent in any action taken against us, and failure to do this will always result in someone saying we're "playing the race card".

The prosecutor gave the black kids more serious charges for similar crimes...trust us black people, it's justice.

O'Rielly says he's shocked that a black resturant is the same a a white run establishment and no one said "M'Fer get me a Iced Tea"...trust us black people, it was a compliment.

Black people are stranded in a flooded city without government assistance for FIVE DAYS, they were denied entry into neighboring white counties by gun-toting white people... trust us black people it would have gone down exactly the same if this happened in Utah.

What the hell have they done to deserve the benefit of the doubt?

It is quite fun to watch people enter this small club I go to. From the outside you basically can't see in at all. We will get random older (50+) people walking in atleast a couple of times a night. Its fun to watch if they realize this isnt their usual scene before ordering a drink, or after. You can just watch the expression on their face. The best is when they order the drinks, take a look around and give it a shot anyways and end up having a good time. Unless it is that one creepy old guy drooling over the girls. But in the situation I was referring to is usually a well dressed couple. A couple doors down is a reasonably upscale restaurant so I think a lot of time its people wandering over from there having an after dinner drink.

I give them a lot of credit when they stick around instead of coming in and making an immediate uturn. It really is a very friendly establishment.
