Even the BBC continue to refer to it as Burma, which should tell you something about how the Generals are regarded.

2007-09-26 09:57:04 AM
Burma? Did you panic?

2007-09-26 10:23:24 AM

2007-09-26 10:23:55 AM

2007-09-26 10:24:22 AM

/Looks pointedly at USA

2007-09-26 10:25:12 AM
did anyone else think "Whack-A-Monk" would make a good euphemism for doing you know what.

2007-09-26 10:25:43 AM
At what time today does George Bush come on to tell the Myanmar government, "no, no you're doing it wrong, you have to kill them IN THE NAME of Democracy, not against it."

2007-09-26 10:25:54 AM

Not amused!

2007-09-26 10:29:15 AM
This is a sad story, and my heart goes out to the people suffering under that brutal regime. However, I did want to take just a moment to say that "junta" is my favorite word for a dictatorship.

/junta-junta-junta

2007-09-26 10:30:12 AM
El Presidente

You said it, they stink on ice...PULL!

/good to be the king.

2007-09-26 10:32:47 AM
Monk, monk, monk, monk...

Goose!

2007-09-26 10:36:29 AM
Won't somebody PLEEEASE think of the monks?!

2007-09-26 10:37:22 AM
Heard that the people of Burma put the monks in high regard and that they will not react kindly to the government cracking down on the monks.

Can somebody say Revolution?

Anyways, it's refreshing to see people in a repressed country standing up for themselves, after all these years of "We must bring freedom through force!" in Iraq.

2007-09-26 10:37:55 AM
I read the headline as whack a monkey day...heheh whack the monkey...

2007-09-26 10:38:11 AM
Crown_of_Shoes - that blaming Bush stuff is old and, to be honest, not very creative.

2007-09-26 10:39:55 AM
This would not happen if the monks were better armed!
(Right?)
(Right.)

2007-09-26 10:40:07 AM
I think its about time we start a mission of Burma!

Remember to reach for your revolver.

/obscure?
//Come on..

2007-09-26 10:40:51 AM
Yeah, I know it's fark, but I'm really not amused by the headline.

2007-09-26 10:41:10 AM
As expected, it's Whack-A-Monk Day THANK GOD!......you've done nothing but moan since you got here!"

2007-09-26 10:41:40 AM
Government's cracking down

Protestors, the troops are beating

but no one's retreating

the monks are standing their ground

Burma's saved?

2007-09-26 10:42:32 AM
Did they set them on fire? I always thought that was the preferred
way for them to die.

To those who used the Python line, I hate you for getting there before me.

2007-09-26 10:42:35 AM
I blame Jessie Helms

2007-09-26 10:43:06 AM
Maybe that is how Bush is inspiring the world. Fix your own country or we'll come and make it about as farked up as before if not worse

FTFA:
The security forces fired warning shots and tear gas to try to disperse the crowds of demonstrators while hauling away defiant Buddhist monks into waiting trucks ...

"defiant Buddhists"?

Oxymoron much?

/jumbo shrimp
//government intelligence
///deafening silence
////poor little rich kid

And oh yeah, +1 for what Sybarite said also ...

Oh, this finally made it. When do we get the story about the bridge in Vietnam that just collapsed and killed 30+ people?

And make the headline funny, dammit. I can't be getting all my news from the CBC, you know.

RiverRat: "defiant Buddhists"?

So, just what in your knowledge of Buddhism is it that would be odd about a monk being defiant?

Maybe that is how Bush is inspiring the world. Fix your own country or we'll come and make it about as farked up as before if not worse

That just shows how great Bush is - he is willing to be considered an aggressive evil farkwit by almost the entire world just to help advance democracy in other countries a little...maybe.

RiverRat: "defiant Buddhists"? Oxymoron much?

It's just like all of the Christians you know who would turn the other cheek if you struck them. Not too farkin' many.

There is only so much up with that they will put.

UNC_Samurai: They're trying to fulfill the conditions for the ring of Water. Watch; they'll move to another province in a minute.

So they're going for an enlightenment victory? That's a hard one to pull off.

Might want to look into that a little farther than Hollywood ...

RiverRat: "defiant Buddhists"?

Satyagraha - Peaceful Non-compliance; The willingness to do the right thing despite whatever personal suffering it might bring about.

A word originated in Hinduism but also applies to Buddhism.
