80% of people probably will return the cash.

2002-09-24 12:33:18 PM
seems reasonable to me....

2002-09-24 12:34:22 PM
free money! me wantee!!!

2002-09-24 12:34:53 PM

To help the bank understand how this will turn out, let me quote the ruling from a U.S. court case which took place centuires ago:

"Finders keepers, loosers weepers."

2002-09-24 12:34:53 PM
yeah, except for the person who had 300 transactions in that hour and a half

2002-09-24 12:35:23 PM
Those who don't return the money will surely justify this to themselves somehow. "It's not stealing! The bank screwed up! Sorry! That's their problem!"

2002-09-24 12:35:26 PM
That will happen. (waits patiently for pigs to fly)

2002-09-24 12:35:56 PM
Er, to requote"
"Finders keepers, losers weepers."

2002-09-24 12:36:22 PM
My luck, they'd charge my account for all of it...

2002-09-24 12:37:52 PM
Well, it works that way in Monopoly:

Bank Error in your favor. Collect £10.

If this happened to me in America, I'd keep the cash. fark them. FDIC Insured mother farkers!!

Last week when I went out to lunch the total was $6.25, I gave the guy $7 and he gave me $13.75 back (he was taking someone else's order while he was fishing for my change and thought I gave him a twenty). Free lunch and a six dollar profit.

2002-09-24 12:41:13 PM
Sure, no problem, right after i charge them account keeping fees, transaction fees, minimum balance fees, right farking bastard fees. That leaves them with approximately..................farking nothing.

how much is L10 in US$? and how many times is an atm used in 3 1/2 hrs?

the bank should just let it go. good PR

2002-09-24 12:42:10 PM
I'd give them back the money if they called me then waited on hold for a hour listening to Barry Mantilow then wrote me a nice letter.

You obviously have never worked in retail. If the register is short, the employee is blamed. So it would have been nice for you to have been honest.

Remind me never to let you into my home. You might think my wallet on the counter is an offer of cash.

Sparks.

It's not going to be hard for them to figure out who went to the ATM... It's all in the logs. Figuring out exactly how much they got extra may be a problem though.

Seeing as the machine was in Ebbw Vale, I doubt it was used at all. The still use sea shells and animal bones as currency in Wales.

Call me a dork, but I return money to people all the time.

People drop money and I return it.

Or if I get back too much change, I give it back.

Makes me feel like I am scoring some karma points.

However-

I found what looked like an error at Amazon.com a while back where a $1900 TV was going for $99, and I ordered one immediately. I guess if it is a person whose face I can see makes an error, I correct it. If not, well I don't know.

Aw crap, there goes all my karma...

Stealing is stealing, folks, no matter how you justify it. Call me old fashioned.

£10.00 is approximately $15.50.

That's weird any other company that makes mistakes and loses money over it doesn't ask for the money back. If I was the bank I'd just not say anything suck up the cost and save themselves from looking incompetent

2002-09-24 12:47:40 PM
Amazon.com figured out they made an error and didn't ship my T.V.

2002-09-24 12:48:14 PM
Sos, it shouldn't be too hard. They know how much extra went out with each transaction, and the logs tell who and how many transactions.

Madcharlie Well, there you go then... I think the bank might be telling people "Be nice and return it, or we will deduct it from your account anyway."

2002-09-24 12:52:27 PM
15.50? Sweet! Pack your bags kids we're moving to Easy Street.

2002-09-24 12:53:14 PM
I have found returned wallets/purses to individuals and think it is good Karma. I never even considered taking the cash.

Banks on the other hand are a different story.

When I was in college, I found a wallet that someone dropped in a classroom. After class, I took it right to the campus police. I never even considered opening it. As for banks, maybe if I had a big crappy bank like Fleet I would say screw them, but I have a nice credit union, where losses effect the returns I get on my account, and they are a great bank to deal with, so I would return it.

2002-09-24 12:57:50 PM
What money?

2002-09-24 01:00:30 PM
This is only like $15 bucks a piece, over a span of only an hour and a half. Wasn't there a bank somewhere that was doing this on purpose a while back to keep their customers happy? At most the bank lost a thousand dollars. They should just let it go.

2002-09-24 01:01:21 PM
One more thing, I lost my wallet in college. There was no money in it ( I never put any money there). It was gone a few days, and finally someone tracked me down and returned it to me. I always remember how that felt when I find stuff that doesn't belong to me.

2002-09-24 01:03:59 PM
I learned early in life that I have to give it back. Otherwise bad shiat happens to me. I guess it's some sort of karma thingy, but I can't keep money that I know doesn't belong to me.

OTOH when I give it back, I always get some legitimate money unexpectedly.

2002-09-24 01:04:22 PM
Wow, what a moral group og people. I too, have found wallets and cash in various places before. I've always returned them. The cash is the hardest thing to return, because it's right there in front of you, but it's the right thing to do. I know if I lost my wallet, I would like someone to return it, with everything still inside.

2002-09-24 01:09:19 PM
Well it is good to see that there are a few moral people on Fark.

I learned a long time ago that almost all dishonest people think that everyone is like them, that is to say "I would keep the money because I know everyone else in the world would."

2002-09-24 01:10:55 PM
We farkers cut across a good selection of average, ordinary people. And most average, ordinary people would return found money.

I'm not talking about finding a $5 bill lying in the parking lot of K-Mart. That's obviously yours. I'm talking about money that you know who it is supposed to go back to. Payback's a biatch and I'd rather not suffer it.

2002-09-24 01:11:40 PM
brisvegasEXACTLY!! There may be many banks, but its a major conspiracy. Let's see, I give you ALL MY MONEY, you get to do WHATEVER YOU WANT WITH IT while I'm not using it. And then you charge me for that. Banks did not used to operate that way.
Sidenote: If they know how much extra $ was dispensed to you, you are responsible for it and they will take it out of your account. Just like when they deposit extra money to your account. Don't go out and by a car or vacation with it, because they will take it all back (and they have lots of lawyers).

Fenester..

Kind of like all those people in New York who kept withdrawing the maximum ammount everyday, knowing very well their account would not cover it, just because the mainframe computer which kept track of account balances was down?

2002-09-24 01:22:55 PM
Once, an ATM gave me an extra $20; I went to the teller and returned it; she looked at me as though I were an idiot...

And, quite frankly, I'm not that self-less...

2002-09-24 01:23:47 PM
Worf would give it back. It's an "honor thing", Earth creatures.

2002-09-24 01:24:10 PM
bank error in your favor, collect $50

2002-09-24 01:32:08 PM
Just today I picked up & returned some coins to a lady in a wheelchair, she looked at me like I was belittling her & gave no thanks. I went away with quite mixed emotions.

On the topics of banks, I'd take the money and do a jig. 'Return the money'..hahaha, right.

Step 1. Review Sevice charges on your latest monthly statement
Step 2. Review current Intrest Rate on Creditcard & Loans
Step 3. Compare afformentioned intrest rates to the Intrest rate on your savings/checking accounts
Step 4. Tell the bank to go fark themselves.
Step 5. Conquer the French

Bass555:
Yeah, I've noticed that whenever I return extra change or something like that people seem shocked and look at me like I have grown a third head.

2002-09-24 01:44:10 PM
I'd take the money from an american bank... When I was in college in the US the banks wanted to charge me for a checking account, not even counting how much the buggers charged me everytime I strayed away from their ATMs... When i was a student in the UK the bank gave me £50 ($75) as a gift for signing on as well as some CD vouchers and issued me a £1000 intrest free overdraft facility... so I think I'd give the money back to a UK bank...

2002-09-24 01:49:34 PM
Er, yeah. Which bill is yours? Not sure? Well, what is the serial number?
