I feel sad for people who are perfectly content to never contemplate the nature of the universe surrounding them and the existence they experience. There are many people just like this woman, who never bother to learn or even ponder things, because it "doesn't matter" to them.

It's an almost terminal lack of curiosity, and it saddens me - because it makes these people merely cogs in a machine, useful for one purpose alone and absolutely helpless outside that single insectoid specialization. It's mankind as a pack animal wearing blinders.

Ponder. Explore. Test. Learn. It's the one most important trait we as people have.

I'd also suspect that a fair amount of Americans bristle at the thought that their original ancestors were African.

that doesn't bother anyone, it's the thought that we may have english ancestory...

Bingo. Science = how, Faith = why.

Out Of Bounds: Maps. More proof that we need more maps.

Maps just add to the confusion about the Earth being flat. What we need are globes.

Thorak: One of the basic functions of religion is theology, which is rooted in logic and reason.

Please explain. Theology is just man's way to explain things he can't understand by humanizing the unknown.

SherKhan: It's one thing to be ignorant. These things happen. Hell, I'm ignorant of many things. But it's entirely another thing to be willfully, even pridefully ignorant.

this.

the word you're looking for there is: obtuse

it's also very fun to tell people they are being obtuse. not only do they get pissed for being called out on their a$$hattery but you get the added bonus of watching ignorance in action as they struggle to grasp what the term, "being obtuse" actually means.

Kyosuke: whelmed: That is beyond sad, but probably representative of the efficacy of some of our educational system. How is our educational system supposed to change these ideas when we're happy to let children be brainwashed with religious ideas from birth? These fools have a 6 year head start.

"Jesus loves me this I know, For the Bible tells me so" repeated ad nauseam is a form of brainwashing, whether anyone cares to admit it or not.

This is why whenever I see someone named Mary I automatically assume she has a little lamb somewhere.

You_mean_Im_gonna_stay_this_color: Religion teaches you to not ask questions

Wrong.

You are again attacking blind faith, rather than religion. I'm in complete agreement that blind faith is idiotic.

"Religion", as a practice, includes theology, which is solely about asking questions. If you aren't capable of discussing theology, you're not really religious. You have blind, ignorant faith, and should shut the hell up about it, since you don't want to bother learning the basics.

Agreed. It was at that point in the video that I had to hit "pause" so that I could smack my forehead several times without distraction.

What's even more amazing to me is that Whoopi actually seemed to be approaching the territory of an intelligent thought for a minute there.

TheCharmerUnderMe: Please explain. Theology is just man's way to explain things he can't understand by humanizing the unknown.

That's like me saying "Science is just man's way to explain things by itemizing the Divine."

While it may be technically accurate, it doesn't have any actual weight as an argument, nor is it in any way useful.

Agreed, and thankfully Satan was there to lead her to the proper choice in that fable. The entire xian view of the old testament is upside down. Satan is the good guy, the god character is the evil one, and somehow humans persevere.

Well, I know for sure that the moon is made of Cheese and is round.

That is why Cheese gets so expensive. If you look in the sky, the moon gets smaller then bigger then smaller as the month passes by. More cheese, less cheese, more cheese, less cheese. A cheese cycle.

If more people made cheese instead of harvesting it from the moon, we wouldn't have to worry about the moon getting smaller and larger again.

Oh, and Whoopie, God didn't say take knowledge and run with it. Au contraire, God said take knowledge and be damned and exiled. He didn't want feisty wannabes. He wanted obedient cattle.

Eve chose well.

Cynicism aside, you're being overly broad with the term "knowledge" here. The Tree of Knowledge is more correctly known as the Tree of Knowledge of Good an Evil, and gave Adam and Eve just that. Most religions see this as a good thing, and quite probably part of God's plan from the beginning, as it allows people to earn God's love and salvation, rather than just having it granted to us.

Yyyyeeah...all of the people in here claiming the US education
system is to blame are incorrect. You are taught from the first

AgeOfReason: Agreed, and thankfully Satan was there to lead her to the proper choice in that fable. The entire xian view of the old testament is upside down. Satan is the good guy, the god character is the evil one, and somehow humans persevere.

You're being trite, but the Eden tale comes almost directly word-for-word from Babylonian myth. Which explains why, in the Bible version, God is talking in the royal "we"; "We shall create man in our image" and all that; in the Babylonian version, there was more than the one God.

And in that version, it was the "good guy" who took the form of a snake and snuck into the garden to free man from his enslavement.

Now, for the twist; remember the Jews? Remember how they were captured and enslaved by the Babylonians? They had exposure to the myth, and every reason to pick their enemy's enemy as their friend, or God.

Yes, we can. Not all religions are to blame, mind you, but there are certain sects that pride themselves on their anti-science stance.

I know a lot of the "earth is about 4000 years old" crowd here in teh midwest.

You can really scare (read: piss off) a rural fundamentalist christian by telling him/her that jesus was(is) jewish.
