Commanding their division the same way the Red Sox are commanding the AL East, right? If the Mets continue down this path, they'll be lucky to make wild card.

Go Phils.

I have a 20 bet that Cleveland and Philly play in the World Series this year that pays out over $2500. Cmon Phils you can do it.

7-4 Phils. I'm sure that'll be game.

You honestly can't believe the Sox are choking? September isn't usually the best month for the Sox. They *should* hold on to the division, but if not, they'll get the wild card... that's pretty safe.

Division-wise, the Yanks have a much easier schedule (Baltimore, Toronto, Tampa Bay) than the Sox do (Tampa Bay, Oakland, Minnesota). But a 2.5 game lead with a magic number of 9 and ten games left to play is pretty big.

2007-09-19 07:28:38 AM
The Mets have lost 5 in a row. It must be mid-September

what's that supposed to mean? they won the division last year, and they were out of it by this point in the previous billion years.

personally I think they'll be OK, but if they choke it away at least they'll be more like the brooklyn dodgers fred wilpon's always trying to emulate. (and maybe phillies fans will stop acting like whiny tragic emo losers... though that's not bloody likely).

oh please, how many times have we had the old "philly fans are the best fans evar because they're soooo passionate despite being soooo tortured" chestnut shoved down our throats?

The Mets are free falling and have no confidence in themselves

They looked plenty confident last night, but all the confidence in the world won't help when your pitcher doesn't have it.

They are some of the best fans ever, they're going to go to the games whether the team is in first or last, can't say that about the fans of the NY teams. Yeah Philly fans are going to boo the players when they suck or don't perform the way they are being paid to play, should they cheer instead? And Philadelphia fans have never been about being sooo tortured, thats the Red Sox fan battle cry.
And yeah all the confidence in the world will help when your pitcher doesn't have it, witness the Phillie/Cardinals game the other night. The Phillies blow an 11 run lead but don't pull a Met by rolling over and dying. Get an offense and then cry about your pitching, the Phillies pitching is probably worse than the Mets and the Phillies OWN the Mets this year. Yeah yeah I know, but but but the Mets have injuries.

Chak: They are some of the best fans ever, they're going to go to the games whether the team is in first or last, can't say that about the fans of the NY teams.

Another horseshiat myth. I remember Eagles games being blacked out on TV in the late 90s because the team sucked and they were getting 20,000 a game at the Vet. Yeah, you guys are soooo much better than NY.

What bullshiat are you gonna spew next?

And Philadelphia fans have never been about being sooo tortured

LOL, whatever you say man. Maybe you should actually visit Philly sometime and see the people walking around wearing this:

www.drunkenbleachers.com

Get an offense and then cry about your pitching

The offense was not the problem. They gave their pitcher three four-run leads and he couldn't hold any of them.

Yeah yeah I know, but but but the Mets have injuries.

No, that's the Phillies fan's built-in excuse. It's so convenient. You win, "look at how much we've overcome!" You lose, "waaah, look at all our injuries."

The Mets have had an absurd amount of injuries, you don't see anyone in the national media giving them a BJ over it.

2007-09-19 09:00:54 AM
I blame myself for this skid.

I have a Mets poker card protector that I always keep in my wallet. On Thursday night, I took it out to play cards (like I always do), but I forgot to put it back in my wallet. The Mets are 0-5 since that happened. This morning, I found the protector on my floor. Smooth sailing from here? Please!! For the love of god, please!!!!

I grew up near Philadelphia, got back there this summer and never saw a t-shirt like that, I'm not saying that they don't exist, I've never seen one, anyone wearing one of those is an idiot. The Philadelphia teams have been close to winning a few times, but hey they've just never been good enough.

If your offense can't pick up the slack for crappy pitching, then yes it is a problem.
The Mets have had an absurd amount of injuries, you don't see anyone in the national media giving them a BJ over it.
I knew it, I knew you'd go the injury route as an excuse for the Mets. Are you kidding me? The New York press is the massage parlor of the sporting world when it comes to their teams. Look the Mets really aren't that good. The only reason that they were able to get into first and hold on to it for awhile was because a Phillies team that isn't much better played like shiat for the first 20 games.

You sure you haven't lived here your whole life? You've got the philly bullshiat act down pat.

and never saw a t-shirt like that, I'm not saying that they don't exist, I've never seen one, anyone wearing one of those is an idiot. The Philadelphia teams have been close to winning a few times, but hey they've just never been good enough.

Oh, so YOU didn't see any on your nice little summer vaca, they must not exist, right? Whoever's making and selling them has to be doing so for fun, not because there's a demand for them in a consumer-driven market or anything like that.

If your offense can't pick up the slack for crappy pitching, then yes it is a problem.

You score eight runs against the Nats, you should win. The blame falls on the starting pitcher. It's that simple.

I knew it, I knew you'd go the injury route as an excuse for the Mets.

LOL, strawman much, or do you just not read?

The New York press is the massage parlor of the sporting world when it comes to their teams.

Have you ever been to New York, or even read a New York newspaper?

Look the Mets really aren't that good. The only reason that they were able to get into first and hold on to it for awhile was because a Phillies team that isn't much better played like shiat for the first 20 games.

So your logic is, "if it weren't for all those games we lost we'd be so much better"? Brilliant!

And maybe Phillies fans should actually wait until going into first place before they talk trash.

Gotta go to work been nice arguing with you, we're going to have to agree to disagree.

This week has been par for the course as far as this Mets season goes.

They managed to provide the maximum amount of aggravation and stress every day since April, and I only see that trend continuing until I hang myself in the bathroom on October first.

Hopefully the last thing I see before I die is Mota taking a comebacker off his skull.

K-mart Jeter? If you're talking about Reyes, you're way off. They may play the same position, but i couldnt think of a bigger contrast in offensive styles.

Of course theres no arguing with a yankee fan about "Captain Clutch" who hasnt clutched his way to a world series ring since the real captain of Jeter's team, Paul O'neill, retired.

He's talking about Wright.

I was thinking about the Red Sox lately. I came up with this. Tito put Gagne in the game last night to see if he could handle a high pressure situation. He couldn't. Would you rather find this out in the playoffs? He wont be throwing when it matters, and that's the playoffs, not the regular season. Okajima has pitched a lot this year and needs a rest. Manny needs to be 100% for us to win a championship. Shilling needed to be really tested the other night to see what he was capable of. We will not push him for the rest of the year. He can go a strong 6 or 7. Tito is assessing the situation.
I kinda agree with what he (Tito) is doing. We are putting together the most important part of the team. Our pitching. We had all these unbelievable rookie pitchers and fielders that came up this year and need to know if they are the real-deal. I know it means a lot to us for them to win the division, but it is more important to BOSTON that they win the WS. Let's go Sox! I have faith. The panic button doesn't apply this time, we Red Sox are in the drivers seat.
PS. New Dropkick Murphy's CD is really good.

can't believe both the Red Sox and Mets are choking down the stretch

Not really familiar with the Sox history eh? I don't think the Mets really have done this very often so I couldn't take your comment as sarcasm.

I would find it hilarious if the Mets missed the playoffs all together and the season ended with Beltran looking at a strike right down the middle of the f'ing plate again.

RodneyToady: You honestly can't believe the Sox are choking?

What do you call losing 2 to the Blue Jays in September while the Yankees take 5 of 6 from you? You can blame it on injuries if you want, but after leading 14 games or so, those Yankee footsteps have gotta be sounding loud.

OneBrightMonkey: Hopefully the last thing I see before I die is Mota taking a comebacker off his skull.

Now. Now. A line drive breaking his hand will be quite enough.

srhp29: Not really familiar with the Sox history eh?

Nah. It's more that I wrote the Yankees off months ago. The Sox looked really good, even as the Yankees crept back into the race. As recently as a few weeks ago I figured this wasn't going to be 1978 again - the Sox looked that good.

The Mets have done a bunch of choking over the last few years (see Bobby Valentine era).

I am a Braves fan and maybe my memory is selective but I don't remember the Braves having to come back to catch the Mets to win the division ever.

I do remember Kenny Rogers walking in the winning run in the deciding game of the NLCS one year though.

That was before he discovered that "melted Tootsie Rolls" on your pitching hand can turn you into the second coming of Christy Mathewson.

hey, didn't see you around much earlier this month. wonder why.

and to answer your question, the braves have needed to come back to win the division this year and last year; they just haven't done it.

but more on point, the mets blew the wild card late in 98 and almost did it again in 99.

and to answer your question, the braves have needed to come back to win the division this year and last year; they just haven't done it.

Yeah, but see, I was looking for when the Mets choked. They obviously won the division last year, so they didn't, right? The jury is still out on this year, but they are doing a mighty fine job of it thus far. It is funny. Mets fans were all...Pedro will be back and it will be over. Now, he is back and pitching very well, yet they still have managed to blow almost their entire division lead.

hey, didn't see you around much earlier this month. wonder why.

Yeah, sorry. I am not one of those fans who talk trash or bring up the past decade in a half in order to be able to do so. The Braves aren't going anywhere so why would I come around to talk about their series with the Mets? Also, were there any threads regarding the Mets/Braves series? I doubt it because neither of them are the Yankees or Red Sox.

2007-09-19 11:35:51 AM

and I told you - 1998, with a near-repeat performance in 1999.

I was confident, but given how this season has gone and how baseball is in general these days, never did I think it was completely in the bag. I was cautiously optimistic.

As Robuls likes to say...Prove it?

maybe I have you confused with somebody else, but that's all I've ever seen you do. is there another braves fan out there whose handle begins with s?

I have actually been pretty hard on the Braves since about July. The beginning of the season, the race was tight, so I probably did do some talking when it made sense to. Do you actually have a point? Are you that sad about your Mets that you try to create an argument where not exists?

And OMG...the Mets blew a wild card lead once, so that is somehow showing some sort of pattern? Some fan. The year they blew that lead, what was their biggest lead anyway? I see that the Cubs and Giants played a playoff game for the wild card so it was a three team race? Someone had to lose it.

2007-09-19 11:40:55 AM
Oh, by the way Robuls. I did some minor checking back in threads when the Yankees were looking pretty dead way back when. I couldn't find one comment by you where you said you had given up on the season. I didn't look at all of them obviously, but you always seemed to have a slight confidence about you.
