That's what the HRC (Human Rights Campaign) does, and they still focus on little more than gay rights and furthering their own organization, so I'm sure that could work for the UM's department too.

I know what you mean. Have you seen the GLBTIQQ acronym? Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersexed, Queer, and Questioning...

Just the acronym made me want to back out of volunteering at the gay community center.

Personally, I liked SODA: Sexual Orientation Diversity Association. Easy to remember and included straight orientation.

My school has an LGBTI (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Intersex; I never did get anybody to explain quite what the difference between "trans" and "inter" was). It always seemed like a really terrible idea to try listing every possible orientation like that. There are around 7 billion people on the planet, you try enumerating their diversity and you're just going to end up offending whoever you inevitably miss.

I never thought of it that way. I guess it would be like forcing a Jewish group to also represent Muslims, Buddhists, Wiccans, Pagans, and every other non-Christian faith on campus.

Like when my uni got rid of the women's wimmins centre. It got changed to GLBTQ centre or something. We curtly asked if perhaps the Africans, Bengalis, Germans, Greeks, and Italians might also like to merge.

However, when it's nothing but practicing dykes in charge of your women's wimmins centre this is what happens.

If I'm reading the article right, they're trying to be inclusionary of "allies", not of the lesser represented forms of deviance. If that's the case, they should stop worrying. When I was involved with the local GLBTA, the "allied" groups like P-Flag were the only ones who weren't constantly biatching about how they were being represented. The lesbians complained that "gay" came first in GLBTA, the gay men were split into factions over the use of the word "gay" over some other nearly identical term, the straight drag queens objected to being labled "transgender", etc.

Seriously, if you want to witness drama to put any junior high girls locker room to shame, be gay for a day and attend an event planning meeting for your local GLBTA group.

If these groups would ever learn to shut the fark up about semantics, they could get a lot accomplished for their cause.

Yes, and no. Not all intersexed people are 'hermaphrodites'. It's a more general term describing anyone whose sexual organs deviate from standard male and female.

Basically, 'true hermaphrodites' and what used to be known as 'pseudo-hermaphrodites' without the qualification of 'true' and 'false'.

Intersexed people are born with genital, chromosomal, gonadal, or some other sort of physical abnormality which makes them deviate physically from standard male or female.

Which is different from transgender, but there's often overlap in the communities. A lot of intersexed people go through some sort of gender transition later in life as they feel they were assigned to the wrong gender at birth or later.
