(Chicago Sun-Times)   A sure sign Fall is here? The first story about parents and teachers freaking out about high-school kids having sex at school dances has appeared. And by "having sex" I mean "dancing."   (suntimes.com) divider line 169

I'd like to point out that the towns in question are Naperville and Evanston, two white-bread McMansion suburbs of Chicago. Any actions taken to limit how these dopey suburban teeny-boppers misappropriate black culture is fine with me.

Can a woman walk through their hood at night? Can a woman walk through a black hood at night? Then pound sand.

Primitive behavior is "black culture"? A "black thing"? Isn't that racist?

I am from the small Oklahoma town that inspired Footloose.

No, really.

Time magazine had a feature about us back in the 80's when the high school kids wanted to have a prom for the first time. They interviewed the pastor of my church, who made a nice statement about chaperoning, that it's better than letting the kids go off somewhere and get involved in something more dangerous, etc. The mag didn't think that was sensational enough. So they went out to the country and found a hysterical preacher of a little backwoods church, and he gave them the quote they wanted: that the town's pregnancy rate would skyrocket if there was a prom.

/proms are stupid anyway
//after-prom parties are better, especially when the hypnotist gets that quiet guy from band to dance like a Chippendale

I teach middle school (gettting a kick, etc.)

I'm amazed at what kids, and some parents, think the kids should be able to get away with at school. "It's just dancing!" You're AT school. It's a school function.

You want to be Ren McCormick and go to the abandoned barn? Be my guest, but it ain't going to fly on campus.

Not sure if you're trolling or being sarcastic, but I'll bite.

Parents. Let's not forget they play a role here, too. Even when I slip and allow my kids to see something they shouldn't, I let them know why it's inappropriate.

However, I do agree about how much garbage is on TV. Yesterday, during a college game from 12:00-3:00, ABC aired a commercial for a new show and the characters were discussing having sex. I don't think I should have to be on alert during college football on a Saturday, but I guess I'd better pay more attention.

Hmm, I don't suppose that the well documented fact that every generation has tried to "shock" the previous generation with their behavior since the days of the Romans - and probably before but the Romans are the first recorded instance of this phenomenon that I am aware of.

It isn't just mass media, even though mass media has made it possible for "fads" to spread more quickly, it is what I did as a teenager and every teenager has probably done since the beginning of time.

Monitoring commercials is tough. Whether 'Family Guy' is something the kids can watch or not is a relatively easy decision to make because because you know what your going to get with the show. You have no way of know what commercials will be shown during the show though.

There's a lot of talk about improving our K-12 education. The discussion tends to center around whether schools should be privatized or not. The 'back to basics' approach advocated here probably has a better chance of succeeding.

Interesting non sequitur.

It is indeed about parents. Parents are resisting the attempts by the media (which hasn't existed since the ancient world) to sell the crudest, most base products they can for maximum profits. If no one resisted, they would sell snuff films and the raunchiest porn to elementary school kids. If they could get away with it, broadcast tv would look like a Rob Zombie film that Rob Zombie would disapprove of. It would make a lot of money, so it would be done, if they could get away with it.

The energy and naivety of the young and our media profiting from their weaknesses, and making things worse, are two different things.

There are radio stations where I live (and I'm sure they're in other places too) that make it a point not to air songs or engage in dialogue that parents would have to worry about while the kids are in the car. Even though I hate the music, at least it's a distraction and I don't have to worry.

You're right about the commercials. I wouldn't care in prime time, because there isn't much I want the kids watching at those hours, anyway. But I'd like to catch some football with the boy on Saturday afternoon without having to think about turning the TV down every time there's a break.

Can't a man get drunk with his kids without concerning himself with TV content?

Good idea! Ban all forms of dirty dancing, kids ALWAYS respect bans like these and obey ALL orders from their elders, rational or not. No kids have ever been tempted to press the limits just to piss the authority figures off, NEVER! Sane and rational rules have NO history of pushing teens off to a more private environment to "check things out" without the supervision of the rational and sane adults who make up these rules. So set your boundaries and enforce your rules. These teens will respect all of them with the enthusiasm these rules deserve.

Aha! You have snapped at the bait and become a winner via the back door. Yes a public (government) school education is nearly worthless anywhere. Vouchers, private schools, parents making educatioal decisions for thier children. This is where the future should be. Even home schooling is better. Get the government and teacher's unions out of school and we will be able to compete in a world market again.

So, here's the thing. If, hypothetically speaking, I want to see some "adult entertainer" perform live, there are all kinds of rules which prohibit certain kinds of contact. Some places have distance minimums, many have "no touching" rules, almost all have some level of clothing required. Er... at least, that's what I'm told.

Nightclubs oriented for teens, however, allow severe grindage on the dance floor, with absolutely anything other than direct penetration allowed to the point where I wonder how any of the dudes avoid showing crotch-stains. The clothes, or lack thereof, worn by the girls is really startling.

Jealousy? Perhaps. I think I'm more concerned about the "Whee! Gonads and Strife, Gonads and Strife" effect as set forth in a thread a couple of days ago. Do these kids do anything OTHER than drugs and promsicuity? What will their generation be like at 30?

/ In other news, JoBlo has the Grindhouse lapdance online.

slavename Primitive behavior is "black culture"? A "black thing"? Isn't that racist?

Who, besides you, said anything about "primitive"? I'm talking about dances, fashions etc. originating in black culture. These things are then taken by privileged white kids and used out of context. It's been going on since Mezz Mezrow. My OP passed no value judgment on what was being misappropriated. I passed a value judgment on silly children who misuse other people's culture as a shorthand way of creating an identity.

There was a time when just plain dancing was considered "sinful" and suggestive. It wasn't then.

It's technically possible that this kind of dancing was going on, and newspapers were running stories about it, when these kids' parents were in school. Like, they did this when I was in high school in the late '80s and for a little bit before. The girls didn't do so much of the stripper pole-dancing type stuff, but other than that it's basically the same.

/Oh God, I'm old enough to be these kids' parents. But just technically

Yeah, that's a great idea. Ban everything that makes school remotely interesting. That's sure to improve the state of education. Never mind that high school dances are usually funded by the students through entrance fees, so you would never be paying for juking, it's your tiny share of the taxes to pay for such things that is the most important. Never mind the enormous amount of money spent on experimental laser weapons for the millitary, it's school extracurriculars that are really forcing you to tighetn your belt. I'm sure that all the high-schoolers in the country can afford their own private trombone lessons, right?
