Good.

I demand a recount!

That's the lamest punishment I've seen. Good thing he wasn't molesting babies he might have had to sit out a game.

2007-09-13 08:59:10 PM
Yeah, $500k? That's a fraction of his salary in a given year. Goodell is only tough on players, I guess.

What should it have been?

Two game suspension, max fine for both Belichick and the Pats, loss of 1st and 2nd round draft picks, and forfeit of the game.

There also should have been a raid on the offices to see what other teams they have the info on. I doubt this was a first offense.

I was going to volunteer to head your campaign for Comish, until I checked your profile, and saw your evil past.

Holy mother of FSM. Huge.

TikiAndTorch: May I ask what team you're a fan of?

I don't have a "team" for the NFL. I'm a Penn State graduate and a huge Nittany Lions fan. I come from a family of PSU alumni. It's abotu as close as I get to having a team.

I'm from PA and if I had to be pushed for one I guess it could be the Steelers? The husband is a huge Titans fan.

2007-09-13 09:24:24 PM
That'll learn 'em. Yeah.

2007-09-13 09:24:53 PM
There are Eagles players now starting to wonder if there was more to the fact that the Patriots ran a screen every time they blitzed in the Super Bowl than just good coaching...

I can't blame them for wondering at this point. You think NE got caught the first time they cheated? Doubtful.

2007-09-13 09:25:02 PM
Good. I hate the Patriots, those cheating bastards.

I mean, seriously, if you have to cheat to beat the Jets, you are doing something wrong.

Fine was a bit weak.

McClaran got 100 Million Dollar fine.

2007-09-13 09:25:46 PM
you really want to hurt that pats take away their 6th round pic

Roger Goodell: Has 100x the 'nads Bud Selig ever had. Awesome.

2007-09-13 09:26:07 PM
Don't kid yourselves - a first round pick is a huge loss. I don't give a shiat if they have ten of them.

2007-09-13 09:26:21 PM
Should've been suspended...

nodhg: I was going to volunteer to head your campaign for Comish, until I checked your profile, and saw your evil past.

I thought this in her profile: Location: California, MD
meant that she was a doctor in California. I'm still going to vote her for Commish, Joe Pa or not.

The forfeit game would never have happened. There's too much money involved in the byproducts of the actual game.

And I think I'll be taking the under on the Pats now. what motivation do they have to win anything?

2007-09-13 09:26:30 PM
And if they don't make the playoffs, it's their 2nd and 3rd rounders.

2007-09-13 09:26:35 PM
Jeez, a bit stiff for Belichick. That's like, ten thousand sweatshirts.

2007-09-13 09:26:38 PM
So is this over now? We can move on with our lives?

/doubtful

HA! HA!

Suck it mass-holes.

2007-09-13 09:27:10 PM
Does anyone here realize how crucial it is to lose your first round pick? They are obviously making the playoffs so they will lose this pick.

As always, Salon.com's King Kaufman puts everything in perspective: Pats sneak camera into super-secret location: The field

Coach taking drug that has nothing to do with his performance as a coach...suspension. Coach caught red handed cheating in a game...slap on the wrist.

Pro sports are turning into a joke.

2007-09-13 09:27:41 PM
Yeah, because no one in the NFL has ever cheated before.

For the Pat's fan's perspective, read Bill Simmons' article.

2007-09-13 09:27:43 PM
meh.. its not that bad.. the money isnt a lot, but the 1st rnd pick will hurt..

you choose to tell your defense what play to run with hand signals, why the h*ll cant i study them? cant 1 D player have the same radio helmet the QB has? then you wouldnt have to use hand signals.. this is kind of dumb...

/eagles fan
//still thinks this whole thing is dumb.

2007-09-13 09:27:49 PM
Too bad the NFL couldn't have taken the win away and given it to the Jets.

In the immortal words of Nelson..... Ha Ha!

2007-09-13 09:28:41 PM
Gwendolyn: Two game suspension, max fine for both Belichick and the Pats, loss of 1st and 2nd round draft picks, and forfeit of the game.

Did you watch the game? Forfeiture is out of the question, unless you honestly believe that the Pats intercepted the Jets "blow your kickoff coverage" signals.

Anyway, it's pretty obvious that I'm a Patriots fan, but I think this is a fair punishment.

A first round pick, even if the Pats have two (the 49ers), is nothing to shake a stick at. Not to mention that Belichick was fined the maximum that the league would allow.

Gwendolyn: There also should have been a raid on the offices to see what other teams they have the info on. I doubt this was a first offense.

Uh, having video of other teams is not against the rules, in fact I'd be willing to bet they have film of EVERY team... just like the rest of the league:

* Sign stealing is not against the rules
* Having videotape of the opposing team is not against the rules

The Pats broke a rule regarding how to use and deploy cameras, specifically having one on the field, pointed at the Jets defensive coaches. That is what they are being punished for. *Not* what's actually on the tape.

Just to restate, 500k is the maximum fine the league can level on an individual. It's not like Goodell set the bar low with his penalties. Heck, what the Denver Broncos did (cheat the salary cap to keep Elway and Davis in the 90s) could be considered worse, and they only lost a 3rd rounder.

/trying to be as much of a voice of reason as he can, despite being a homer

2007-09-13 09:28:48 PM
cameroncrazy1984: Yeah, $500k? That's a fraction of his salary in a given year. Goodell is only tough on players, I guess.

yah - one fourth is a fraction i guess

its half a million dollars! has a player ever been fined that much?

2007-09-13 09:29:05 PM
damn, thats actually a somewhat serious punishment.

2007-09-13 09:29:06 PM
A first rounder? Wow. I didn't actually think it would be that high a draft pick.

I can sympathize with those who think the fines are rinky-dink given the amount of money made by all involved. I would like to have seen an amount of money knocked off their salary cap for 2008-2009 rather than a straight fine to the team. That way, they can't use the money they would have given to that 2008 first round draft pick on a free agent.

Color me surprised that they didn't suspend Belichick for at least a game. Forfeiting a game is never, EVER going to happen, though.

/Chiefs fan first, Carolina fan second. In case anyone asks.

2007-09-13 09:29:31 PM
HA HA. and um Go Colts.

2007-09-13 09:29:33 PM
eKonk

So is this over now? We can move on with our lives?

I could be wrong, but are you a Patriots fan? Cheating is only crucifiable if you are Barry Bonds or an NBA official, right?

2007-09-13 09:29:37 PM
I love how they don't have to forfeit the game to the Jets. It'd be a mess for the bookies and the NFL can't have that.

2007-09-13 09:29:56 PM
"That's the lamest punishment I've seen. Good thing he wasn't molesting babies he might have had to sit out a game."

You're obviously not a football fan. Losing a first round pick is huge. And no, there was no chance they would have forfeited the game, that's not how it works.

2007-09-13 09:30:35 PM
If they can't just film whatever they want to wherever and whenever they want, then I have absolutely no idea what the Patriot Act is for.

2007-09-13 09:30:52 PM
BalugaJoe: Fine was a bit weak.

McClaran got 100 Million Dollar fine.

McClaren was stealing trade secrets that are private and concealed from view. The Patriots were stealing signs that are out in the open, and the Jets had no expectation of privacy. The rule they broke was in regards to how they did it, not what they did. Sign stealing, unlike what the Pats did, is gamesmanship.

Again, the rule the Patriots violated was in regards to having a cameraman on the field recording signals that are otherwise, legally, observed by everyone.

2007-09-13 09:30:57 PM
The penalty is exactly what it needed to be. I also think a suspension would be completely warranted.

2007-09-13 09:31:07 PM
The whole thing is shameful, and while I'm a fan of the team (and will remain so) I would have liked to see them not stoop to breaking rules.

On the bright side, it more or less guarantees that any wins garnered from here on out can be said to be reasonably tape-recording-free.

2007-09-13 09:31:10 PM
Meh, knowing Belichick, he'll probably convince some other team to give him their first round pick for some practice squad player or something. Or is the Patriots ability to draft well and bank draft picks over the years cheating as well?

2007-09-13 09:31:17 PM
They should forfeit the win over the Jets.

Okay, look...I'm not making excuses. They deserved a big punishment, probably more than what they got, frankly. It was stupid and arrogant to flaunt the rules, to act as if they were above the law, etc.

I'm a pats fan,and I wish the punishment was more, if only because it MIGHT have helped to stop the perception that every win they get is questionable.

So, there you have that. No excuses.

Now, here's why, in my opinion, the punishment wasn't worse. Again, not an excuse:

while what they did was completely illegal, the information they got (defensive signals, along with the ability to match up those signals with specific down and distance information) can be, and likely is, recorded by every team on every play on every sideline...they just don't use a camera to do it.

I'm not saying "everyone cheats," because it's not cheating to try to see how the other team signals plays. But everyone is doing it, they're just not using videotape.

So, if you look at this through the commissioner's eyes, I would imagine he concluded that there was no significant advantage to what they were doing - not enough to force a forfeit of the Jets game, anyway. But the way they did it was clearly a rules violation, and he had to levy a penalty that would keep it from happening again.

Flame away

2007-09-13 09:31:56 PM
What a slap on the wrist. He should be banned from the NFL for life, no questions.

2007-09-13 09:31:59 PM
It always seemed strange to me that many teams who played the Pats could kick the shiat out of them the first time...but the Pats would have their number the next time. $500k fine for the "genius" Belichick? Pocket change.

Loss of first round draft pick? Ouch...but they deserve much more.

/Steelers fan.

I'm being paid under the table by a booster, so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies.
