Fresno? It's hard to believe that a whole town can have Down's Syndrome.

i'm moving from monterey, california to portland, oregon on saturday so i'm really getting a kick out of these replies.

nothing at all wrong with cali, love it to death but i've been here my whole life and it's time for something different. my job has suddenly turned into a swirling vortex of suck and rent is expensive, but the weather and people (esp. central coast) are the bomb.

I've lived in Cali all my life - where the F are all these hippies I keep hearing about? If you mean all the old punk-rockers then yea, I've seen them.

Allen. The end.: OK, kind of a threadjack. I am being asked to transfer with my company from Seattle to Orange, California. Are you saying I would be better off nailing my nuts to a stepladder???

If you can afford Irvine, it's a nice area with good schools and a short commute. Orange has some nice canyon/foothill-type places to live. Public transit sucks. Stay away from Santa Ana.

Current Florida resident.
Lived in Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando, and Gainesville (not in that order). If you visit this place you might want to live here. But as soon as you live here for more than about 15 minutes, you really want to get the f*ck out and go someplace sane. Especially Gainesville. Goddamn, I have never lived in such a bass-ackwards place full of people with the collective intelligence of a colony of termites until I lived in Gainesville.

I thought Central Jersey was quite lovely, save for the endless strip-mall of US 1.

Um, I have to disagree. Central Jersey has rent on a par with, say, Brooklyn or California (think $800 plus utilities for a studio apartment in a shiatty part of town) and traffic to match. Except there's NOTHING to do there that you can't do anywhere else.

How long ago did you leave?

lessee... A while ago...Probably going on a decade. FWIW, I was near the Delaware Water Gap, much more rural and mountainous than Trenton or NNJ.

Princeton seemed nice to visit, but I don't know about living there...I have a feeling that the town/gown relation gets a bit strained from time to time.

I currently live in SW Florida - it's grossly hot, flat, and filled with a lot of fields full of weeds, and sandspurs. I am moving to VA in about 2 months, and can not WAIT to get the fark out and experience those things called "seasons"

Born and raised in California. Couldn't imagine living anywhere else.

Yeah, it costs more but guess what? I get paid more too.

I've lived in quite a few places up and down this state. It's such a big place that different regions do indeed have their own unique feel and lifestyle. But I can't imagine the worst of them being as bad as basically any place in the bible belt. [shudder]

If you were lucky enough to buy a house in CA before the insane housing market (which basically means never in places like SF), you're sitting pretty, if not, good luck. shiat man, houses in the central valley cost 250 grand more than houses in Minneapolis/St. Paul and are about half the size. Plus, the avg salary is less than Minneapolis. Moreover, most people would rather live in the Bay or someplace more cosmopolitan anyhow (i.e. not the valley).

Living in California, you stand a better chance of seeing Jessica Alba in a sundress, getting surprised by some automatic sprinklers. Also, our governor's a cyborg.

The Central Valley is like an Oklahoman outpost. It's flyover territory too, imo.

SF/Oakland/Berkely/Marin is worth every penny.

Hawaii is expensive and has no economy outside of Honolulu if you are not in the tourist industry. But it is amazing there.

Florida is a farking dump. A flat wasteland with a horrid culture. And tons of crime. Screw you FL. I hate you more and more everytime I visit the inlaws.

CA is awesome, but expensive. I do not like the homeless there: way too aggressive. And I am from NYC.

Without Florida, Fark would be just that much quieter and that much more boring.

Born here. Moved away. Am back.

You lived in Fresno. I'd rather live up Dubya's ass than live in Fresno. It and Bakersfield are the two pits of the outstretched arms that is California.

Seriously, comparing Fresno to Washington is completely unfair. Try using a part of the state that doesn't suck, like San Diego, or San Francisco.

2007-09-12 06:40:02 PM
Let all the idiots who think California and Florida are nice places to live move there. Without them, other states will be nicer to live in.

2007-09-12 06:40:03 PM
I live in Florida, but it's Tampa, so it's not so exciting. Busch Gardens and death-metal bands everywhere. Whoopity-doo.

You couldn't pay me to live in (The Democratic People's Republic of) California.

You could, however, pay me to live in Hawaii.

The auction begins in 5, 4, 3, 2 ...

Those numbers would change drastically for Cali if only polled current residents. I'm an L.A. native and hate it. A lot of people I know want to get out because it's turning into Mexifornia.* But it's so hard to leave when you have a lifetime of roots here, and the grandparents provide free babysitting.

*Spare me the "That's wacist!" crap. Until you live in the middle of a flood of uneducated peasant illegals, who shut down hospital ERs, drive in uninsured cars, and destroy the public school system, you don't have a clue.

I'd love it here in Wisconsin if the winters were shorter.

I spent a little time in Cali this summer and I expect I'll be back on a permanent basis within the next five years.

The problems that I see are that here I own two big, beautiful houses. There I'll be lucky to afford rent. But the weather makes it a fair trade.

California's "Central Valley" is bigger than many entire states, sweddjen, so you have to take into consideration that the part(s) you experienced cannot possibly represent all of it.

Like usrid0, I lived in Fresno too. All through junior high and high school. I moved out of there a year after I graduated HS (which was in '94, so I moved in '95).

I came north again and live near Sacramento now. The two places are both considered in the central valley, but they're quite far apart and really nothing at all alike in the social/cultural sense.

Your mileage may vary.

Florida where I was 20 years ago was great - now I wouldn't go near it. Way to crowded. Same with California for the most part - the places where I would like to live would not allow me to live my lifestyle. Hawaii - shoot, even 20 years ago several boat rental places made sure that you know there was a (shotgun, other firearm) "hidden" under the seat "Just in case". I do miss living on a boat there though. Kiving in a flyover state now. What is surprising is how many california families are moving into our area because they want the kids to grow up in a "decent" environment (their words, not mine).

Whew, that makes me feel a little better. I am relocating from Oregon to the Sacramento area in a couple of months, and some of the vitrol against the valley concerned me a little bit. How do you like the Sacramento area?

All of the states in the west have been Californicated.

Idahornia, Washingornia, Caligon, Nevadafornia, Calutah.

It's so sad, they all move from California to get away from it's problems, but have some strange desire to impose them upon us and constantly talk about how, "Well, back in Cali, we used to..."

biatch, you moved from Cali for a reason, let it go.
