From an ideological perspective, I support hate crime legislation. Hate crime laws are intended to punish the people that specifically victimize minorities in order to send a threatening message to other minorities in the community.

The idea behind hate crimes is: "My victim just happened to be a negro," is a far cry from, "I beat up that negro so that the rest of them coloreds know their place."

True hate crimes threaten and intimidate the minority community as a whole, and in my opinion such crimes should carry heavier penalties. However, I don't think that there is a practical way to weed out those types of crimes from all the rest.

Despite the good intent behind hate crime laws, prosecutors and law enforcement will take advantage of any avenue available to them. And we end up with a Southpark-esque situation where someone is being charged with a hate crime solely by virtue of the fact that they are different from their victim.

You're disabled, you're worse than me, get over it.

All crimes are hate crimes. Assign punishment based on what was done, not the motivations behind it. Does the victim really care if he was attacked because he was deaf, or black, or Jewish, or gay, or if the attacker was just after his wallet? No. He's still just as beat up.

I recently lost my hearing to infection from a medical procedure. I do use hearing aids but they are limited. I wear them daily for my own safety while driving and working around equipment. I can tell fairly much what someone is saying when it is in context and I can see them speak. I'll never hear music again but held my hands against the speakers during Pavarotti's Obit. At least I have that. I'm for anything that will make life easier be it implants, hearing aids, signing, etc. I don't understand how hearing loss could make me better than anyone else or my use of signing is some sort of status symbol but I do have questions about what sets off the internet tough guys here. I guess I do have an advantage over the hearing - I don't have to listen to the jerks.
