If they're so against it...

Just eat some seaweed or something.

The yellow ones are like butter. They melt in your mouth. Nothing beats a tomato right off the vine.

We have put away about 20 cans of them so far this season, as well as eating at least some in nearly every meal :-)

Not just growing tomatoes, though:

Those are some beautiful 'maters. Makes my mouth water just looking at them. Did you do/use anything special to get such great reults?

/ yes, it's a gardening thread now

Remember, tomatoes are the second most important part of a BLT.

/suck it lettuce

KellyLockhart: "Did you do/use anything special to get such great reults?"

Thanks, KellyLockhart. I don't do anything too special for them. They are grown in a raised bed with a small watering system on a timer for regular water. Good rich soil with lots of organic matter. The only "trick" I use is Wegener's organic fertilizer. (new window) That stuff seems to really give the plants a boost.

Tomatoes are Evil - the world is split?

No, I think they split over whether its tomato or tomatoe.

2007-09-09 04:42:32 PM
Just add some nice, crisp bacon to this thread & we'll have lunch. Mmmmm...BLT!

FTA....I accedentially ate a cherry tomato in my salad once, and now I worship satan. STAY AWAY FROM TOMATOES! THEY ARE THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL!!

Heh!

Go figure.

Tomatoes are not ready for human consumption. They need a few million more years to crawl up the evolutionary ladder. Once they've firmed up on the inside and gotten rid of those slimy, nasty seeds and whatever that snot is that they swim in, then they'll be ready.

2007-09-09 04:44:59 PM
Gotta admit, I did not wake up today intending to headshot a virtual tomato. Thanks, Fark.

Tomatoes are one the most delicious, versatile fruits out there. Yeah, there are some poisonous compounds in the fruit, but breeders have got most of those out of the fruit and into the vegetation by now (so you might want to limit your 'heirloom' tomato consumption if you're worried about it). And besides, what plant doesn't have some sort of toxin in it? They can't move, and they need some mechanism to defend themselves.

Haters are just trying to get attention and be different

\or they actually don't like the taste
\\in which case I feel bad for them

Ninety-two point four percent of juvenile delinquents have eaten tomatoes.

Eighty-seven point one percent of the adult criminals in penitentiaries throughout the United States have eaten tomatoes.

Informers reliably inform that of all known American communists, ninety-two point three percent have eaten tomatoes.

Eighty-four percent of all people killed in automobile accidents during the year 2000 had eaten tomatoes.

Those who object to singling out specific groups for statistical proofs require measurements within a total. Of those people born before the year 1850, regardless of race, color, creed or caste, and known to have eaten tomatoes, there has been one hundred percent mortality!

In spite of their dread addiction, a few tomato eaters born between 1850 and 1900 still manage to survive, but the clinical picture is poor -- their bones are brittle, their movements feeble, their skin seamed and wrinkled, their eyesight failing, hair falling, and frequently they have lost all their teeth.

Those born between 1900 and 1950 number somewhat more survivors, but the overt signs of the addiction's dread effects differ not in kind but only in degree of deterioration. Prognostication is not hopeful.

Exhaustive experiment shows that when tomatoes are withheld from an addict, invariably his cravings will cause him to turn to substitutes -- such as oranges, or steak and potatoes. If both tomatoes and all substitutes are persistently withheld -- death invariably results within a short time!

The skeptic of apocryphal statistics, or the stubborn nonconformist who will not accept the clearly proved conclusions of others, may conduct his own experiment. Obtain two dozen tomatoes -- they may actually be purchased within a block of some high schools, or discovered growing in a respected neighbor's back yard! -- crush them to a pulp in exactly the state they would have if introduced into the stomach, pour the vile juice and pulp into a bowl, and place a goldfish therein. Within minutes the goldfish will be dead!

Those who argue that what affects a goldfish might not apply to a human being may, at their own choice, wish to conduct a direct experiment by fully immersing a live human head [*] into the mixture for a full five minutes.

[*] It is suggested that best results will be obtained by using an experimental subject who is thoroughly familiar with and frequently uses the logic methods demonstrated herein, such as:

(a) The average politician. Extremely unavailable to the average citizen except during the short open season before election.

(b) The advertising copyrighter. Extremely wary and hard to catch due to his experience with many lawsuits for fraudulent claims.

(c) The dedicated moralist. Extremely plentiful in supply, and the experimenter might even obtain a bounty on each from a grateful community.

I love everything made from tomatoes (sauce, ketchup, salsa, sun-dried tomatoes w/ pasta, etc) and the girlfriend grows 'em by the bushel and cooks/cans with them all summer. Can't stand 'em raw, though...

Could eat tomatoes for every meal.

Nothing better than a warm tomatoe right off the vine in the middle of a scorching hot summer day in Texas.

I am the exact opposite, sir. Nothing better than a nice raw tomato with some olive oil and red wine vinegar.

Throw some fresh mozz in there, you've got yourself a meal.

The only time raw tomatoes are acceptable are on Italian style pizza. Otherwise, they are pure evil.

Of course, after they've been processed into other foods (that is to say, exorcised), they are also acceptable.

It rained so much here that ours all died off and we had to buy very pretty but mostly tasteless ones from the grocery store. It's been traumatizing having to each those things, they really reduce the awesomeness of an afternoon BLT.

DslainteC, those are way nice looking.

Tomatoes taste best when lightly chilled and cut into large slices, though wedges are equally excellent. I've only recently gained a preference for popping whole cherry tomatoes into my mouth and letting them explode. Delicious little suckers.

Never met anyone who didn't like tomatoes enough to make a issue out of it.
What I want to see is the Olive lovers Vs Olive haters debate.

My roma plants aren't ripening properly, as for the beefsteak it hasn't gotten hot enough to even allow the plants the ability to properly grow.

Tomatoes are great. A tomato hater is someone who's never eaten a perfect fresh tomato with olive oil, salt, pepper, and basil. If you can't get into that then you're just...scum.

I swear tomato hate must be genetic.
Everyone, and I mean evryone on my dad's side of the family cannot stand raw tomatoes.
Everyone on my mom's side loves them.
I cannot farking stand them unless processed. I think its something to do with the acidic flavor.

Though part of it may be that every damn fall tomato trucks stain the roads of the central valley red. Looks like a helmetless motorcycle accedent every five farking feet.

/I alos can't stand olives. Mushrooms are fine, though i'm not a huge fan of the texture.

Mnemia: I can't believe that anyone dislikes tomatoes, cooked or raw.

I've never liked raw tomatoes, I dunno why, they just kinda skeeve me out. But obviously I eat ketchup and I'm Italian so I don't mind spaghetti sauce and all that, but raw tomatoes are for throwing.

Maybe if i went under hypnosis I would discover that I had a horrible recurring nightmare about being eaten alive by raw tomatoes, or maybe one time in my early childhood I was raped by a tomato in a back alley one night waiting for mom to get done her shift whoring on the corner.

If you want to extend your tomato growing season, see if you can place a potted tomato within a few feet of your dryer vent.

(I'm in Los Angeles, that's the location of my only plant that hasn't been smothered by sooty mold.)
