I want to change history so the Confederacy won to force Harry Turtledove to find something else to write novels about.

Har har, Confederacy = LOSERS.

If you salute or honor display the Battle Flag of a seditious group that attacked the United States of America, you're pretty much giving up any right you have, in my mind, to claiming any allegiance to the Constitution or any of the privileges you have under American law.

Want to be a traitor? Fine. Get out.

Before we kick this ridiculous flamewar that we've had a million times into high gear, let me remind Northerners that what looks like rabid, fanatical dedication to a cause that is long lost is really just tourism dollars for the South.

Little crossroads towns where two sides stumbled on one another have an economic interest in renaming every street a variation of Davis, Jackson and Lee because it lets them sell mass-produced trinkets made in China and have "The fark Lincoln's Yankee Ass Cafe". People in the South have every right to rape tourists of every cent they have. Their ancestors died so that they may conduct tours and show off suspicious bullet holes where Jefferson Davis may or may not have slept.

You guys are misjudging the attitude Virginia has, specifically, towards the Civil War. It isn't the righteousness of the cause, like you'd hear in South Carolina or the deep south.

Virginia did the bulk of the fighting, and is incredibly proud of how their forces, basically on their own, held off and pretty much owned the entire northern army for 3 years.

Let's call the civil war what it was...

The War of Uncle Bill shooting Uncle Dan in the arm then Uncle Dan shooting Uncle Bill in the buttocks then Uncle Bill burying his bayonet in Uncle Dan's spleen then Uncle Dan lopping off Uncle Bill's head then both corpses being trampled by cavalry charges and panicked retreats.

Whitewash it all you want. What you just said doesn't even remotely resemble the truth.

That said, the state of Virginia has the right attitude about the war. In 1861, owning another human being was an argument an honest, reputable man could make. It must be remembered, therefore, because one side was right and one side was wrong. They were on the wrong side, but it doesn't mean the lives lost and suffering done should be discounted.

We have to remember why the people on the wrong side of history fought and died, and to do that we have to remember them.

Except now there is no north and south. We just get packed into overpriced subdivisions with overzealous H.O.A.'s and travel in earth killing status machines to carry us to and fro. while we bicker about about whatever unresolvable issue is popular that month.

South Postpones Rising Again For Yet Another Year
April 12, 2000 | Issue 36•13

HUNTSVILLE, AL-For the 135th straight year since Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox, representatives for the South announced Monday that the region has postponed plans to rise again.

"Make no mistake, the South shall rise again," said Knox Pritchard, president of the Huntsville-based Alliance Of Confederate States. "But we're just not quite ready to do it now. Hopefully, we'll be able to rise again real soon, maybe even in 2001."

"Yes, sir. The South will rise again, and when it does, I'll be right up front waving the Stars and Bars," said Dock Mullins of Decatur, GA. "But first, I gotta get my truck fixed and get that rusty old stove out of my yard."

"Lord willing, and the creek don't rise, we gonna rise again," said Sumter, SC, radiator technician Hap Slidell, who describes himself as "Southern by the grace of God." "I don't know exactly when we're gonna do it, but one of these days, we're gonna show them Yankees how it's done."

"Save your Confederate dollars," Slidell added. "You can bet on that."

The Deep South states of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Louisiana, and Tennessee consistently rank at the bottom of the nation in a wide variety of statistical categories, including literacy, infant mortality, hospital beds, toilet-paper sales, and shoe usage. Even so, some experts believe the region could be poised for a renaissance.

"The way things stand, things in the Deep South almost have to get better. Otherwise, the people who live there will devolve into preverbal, overall-wearing sub-morons within a century," said Professor Dennis Lassiter of Princeton University. "Either Southerners will start improving themselves, or they'll be sold to middle-class Asians as pets."

"My constituents are decent, hard-working folk," said Sen. Jesse Helms (R-NC), despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, in his 22nd annual "Next Year, By God!" speech on the steps of North Carolina's capitol building. "We are a proud people who mayn't have all that much fancy-pants book-learnin', but we live and die with pride in our proud heritage and the dignity of our forebears."

Helms' speech was met with nearly 25 minutes of enthusiastic hoots and rebel yells by the 15,000 drunk, unemployed tobacco pickers in attendance.

Though Southerners are overwhelmingly in favor of rising again, few were able to provide specific details of the rising-again process.

"I don't know, I reckon we'll build us a bunch of big, fancy buildins and pave us up a whole mess of roads," said Bobby Lee Fuller of Greenville, MS. "I ain't exactly sure where we're gonna get the money for that, but when Johnny Reb sets his mind to something, you best get out of his way."

"Oh, it'll happen, sure as the sun come up in the morning," said Buford Comstock, 26, a student at Over 'N' Back Diesel Driving School in Union City, TN. "The South is gonna rise up, just as soon as we get together and get all our shiat back in one sock. Then, look out, Northerners!"

"Yesiree," Comstock added, "one day soon, the Mason-Dixon Line will be the boundary between a great nation and one whose time done passed."

They tried, in mass, to do exactly that. While I certainly do not agree with the decision, it was certainly the right of the individual states to leave the Union. In the end, it was the North that forced them to rejoin.

Just came in to point out that Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse, not Appomattox--Appomattox Courthouse is not the courthouse in Appomattox, but is, or was, rather, in fact a separate town.

Let's start this flame war with everyone (including the article) getting the history right.

Funny how the CSA may have lost the War, but all the losers live in the North.

I find it amusing that the people most likely to celebrate the Confederacy are the people most against what the Confederacy claimed to be fighting for. The authoritarian, ubernationalist, "WORSHIP R FLAG HARDER OR UR A TRATER!1!" douchebags are the same racist, uneducated rednecks that paint Confederate battle flags on their pickup truck while denouncing the patriotism of anyone that supports states rights, checks and balances, or democracy in general.

2007-09-09 03:45:10 PM
The Confederacy was very similar in nature to the revolution against the British. It was about people who felt they had been wronged by their Government deciding that they wanted out and that they wanted a Government that was more representative. Self-determination is a right and they were merely exercising they right. They weren't fighting for control of the nation, they were trying to opt out as is their right.

2007-09-09 03:45:48 PM
I am calmly reminded on how many U.S. Presidents the south has sent to Washington. Such as Carter, LBJ, Clinton, Bush 1, Bush 2,Truman, Eisenhower and Wilson.
