It only "works" because for most of them they immediately run away before the girl can figure out what happened and that she doesn't know them. The others look like they're girls who were being friendly to begin with and seem harmless.

From the way they were prancing toward each other and holding hands at the beginning, I guessed they're gay, which some of the women were able to pick up on. This seems to be the only reason why they haven't been maced blind.
