2005 will be talked about forever.
They actually ran out of alphabet that year.

We got swatted by 3, including Katrina, in the Keys,
which beat us down pretty good...
but then Wilma hit late in the season. Oct. 24

A lot of my island was waist deep or even neck deep
but it only lasted a short time.
Half the people still had to throw out their beds, rugs, sofas, refrigerators
and sometimes rip out a lot of sheetrock
and I think about 10,000 cars got trashed?

We live very very close to the Chesapeake, and our neighbors are morons. They never report power outages, so we have to run around calling for all of them because they fix the outages by who will get helped first. The last tropical storm that brushed us, it took 10 days for the power to get back on and a decent thunderstorm can knock out the power here for days.

I really hope it doesn't come anywhere near us.

The only heckles Saturday came from those passing by, one of whom shouted, "They're hiring at McDonald's, Mike. Get you a job. Thanks for costing us millions of dollars."

God bless farkers.

From a different article:
(a life long Outer Banks resident)
"We're securing, but not too fast," she said. "There's no evacuation issue at all. This is just a little breeze."

Comparatively speaking, she's right. This is just a little'un.

My granddaughter is Gabrielle. 1 year old. About the same level of destruction.

oh right, since we need more named storms to as anecdotal "evidence" for man-made global warming.

sporkfan: we really need the rain.

we're at least 10" behind here in WNC. Major suckage for crops, not to mention human water supplies.

Here's what'll happen: We get hit hard, 5"+ of rain in 24 hours, and it all runs off because the ground gets saturated in the first 10 minutes.

yay!

No. Go to the NOAA thread from yesterday.

But a tropical storm would bring a few days of soaking road, filling up the reservoirs for the city...which would be nice.

That was a hell of a year. I remember the news talking about 'hurricane fatigue' a la 'battle fatigue'.

I was at school in melbourne that year... four storms. Also had family in miami/homestead. Mom says that at the office, they cut the pack up/prep time in half because they had so much practice.

from yahoo news, the storm doesn't sound *too bad*. but man, trying to get out of the banks (especially going south from corolla and duck to the bridge) is bad even on the best weather days. if it rains hard, Rt 12 becomes its own (un)navigable waterway.

a few years back, i think '05, they were calling for massive rain the day we were leaving. we bailed out the night before and headed to williamsburg to sleep. needless to say, it was a good call.

there hasn't been alot of hurricanes this season so the media has to find some way to scare the shiat out of people and overreact as usual like its the end of the world.

Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale

Regardless of what the liburrl media prints, this is still the metric used in naming and classifying storms. It hasn't changed since '05.

Seriously, man, if its a conspiracy, it is not the scientists conspirizing (?).

where exactly on that scale does a storm with 44mph wind GUSTS fall?

I'm something of a weather enthusiast (read: nerd), and this is the first time I've seen a SUBtropical system get a name.

it's all hype. politically-motivated hype.

and it marginalizes the environMENTALists.

Oh, and there was a sub-tropical storm in Florida that got named in May. I remember because I was there and also wondered when the heck they started naming subtropical storms.

I won't disagree with you there.

The whole deal is that Gabrielle is the name of the system if it becosmes a tropical storm/hurricane.

Of course, in the name of EVERYBODY PANIC, we have declarations of disaster.

I'm on your side, I think.

captain_napalm: where exactly on that scale does a storm with 44mph wind GUSTS fall?

I think they named it with the expectation of going tropical, which it has now. 40mph sustained, 50mph gusts and they expect a little more strengthening by tomorrow.

You haven't been paying attention then (like a weather nerd should). There was one earlier this year.

Subtropical storms are hybrids of tropical storms and mid-latitude lows. The difference between tropical and subtropical is in the core temperatures and distribution of the wind fields.
But sutropical storms aren't typical low pressure systems either, since they don't have fronts.
