Howser: We take great pride in our slang and its always a hoot when you septic tanks mess it up.

Heheh yeah. Maybe we should teach some to old Dubya while he's down here. It would be so much more hilarious to see him screw up our great Aussie slang.

Stopheles: Am I the only person who assumes Bush has fallen off the wagon?

Nope. It would explain why he approaches his speeches like a ten year old who knows that no matter how badly he reads, he's still gonna pass, so he just rattles and slurs his way through them. It would also explain why some days he seems a lot more lucid than others.

Am I the only person who assumes Bush has fallen off the wagon?

Oh GOD no! I've always assumed that he, at most, walked alongside the wagon, let alone getting on it.
He also seems to display symptoms of early onset senile dementia, at least his speech patterns are consistent with such.

If it keeps up at this pace, those post-presidential speeches are gonna be a riot.

Nice extended metaphor -- I'm gonna use that line in conversation.

His whole "I didn't need a 12-step program to stop drinking, I just asked Jesus for help!!" thing strikes me, in hindsight, as consistent with his refusal to acknowledge any mistakes he's made.

And I will go to my grave certain that "the pretzel" was a secretive binge.

FTFA: But not before a veteran White House correspondent seized the opportunity to ask Mr Bush whether there had been any new message in his speech. Apparently misunderstanding the question, he bristled and asked, "Haven't you been listening to my past speeches?" before turning away.

I don't get it. It sounds like the reporter took a nap during the speech, and was like "woah dude, did I miss anything?? Seems Georgie had a right to bristle, no?

/not a Bush supporter in any way, just seemed odd to me...

2007-09-07 07:49:10 AM
Upon finishing his speech, Mr Bush took the wrong way off-stage and, looking slightly perplexed, had to be redirected by Mr Howard to a centre-stage exit.

Looks like Bush doesn't have an exit plan!

HEY OH!!!
I'll be here all night. Remember to tip your waitresses.

Just waiting for one of the candidates to announce that they will bring sobriety back to the White House.

Can we put one of those breathalizer things on him so he can't speak in public without first blowing into the tube?

I would like to point out, again, that more Americans voted for Gore than Bush in 2000. Also, that the intelligent and educated of the U.S.A. are suitably horrified that he's "our" President (unless they're blue blood conservatives making a mint off of tax cuts and war profiteering).

Sahrial: Wow, I teach 7th grade english. And to be honest, the editorial quality of this article is below that level.

Last I knew, the average newspaper article was supposed to be targeted at a 6th grade level, as that's the average reading ability of the country. (This was when I was in school, 10+ years ago, so that's probably lower now)

Reporters are trained to write everything to a grade-eight level of English in the News Corp press. As a Rupert journo, sometimes this makes me feel a bit dirty. But apparently the majority of our readers can't handle anything with more than three syllables.

It doesn't bother me that Bush sounds like an idiot when he talks.

It bothers me that he acts like an idiot, and makes stupid decisions... and somehow coerces this country to go along with them.

ya can't misspell 'its'

There is a psychological phenomenon called NA disorder, in which the person can be fairly intelligent (they say 'high functional) and that person is certain they are supremely intelligent. They can narcissistically afford to sham as though they were a dullard. When they do this, they are indulging the notion of their superiority to themselves.

Bush may be of this type.

The way Bush talks I think that's an appropriate question. After all, he said he was going to the OPEC meeting and his retainers had to scramble after the speech to deny it. With the president twice mentioning being in the wrong country, who's to know what exactly he means?

That's not "folksy", guys, it's "stupid." Social blunders and grammatical errors, combined with no public speaking skills, do not endear our country to anyone in the world.

Now that's stupid.

I don't know, to me it seems like the reporter who wrote this article is just sticking up for his profession for asking a stupid question... I kind of wish I knew what the reporter actually said, like a quote or something...cause "Mr. President, did you have any new messages in this speech that I couldn't understand because of your bumbling?" and "Mr. President, did you say anything in this speech that you haven't said before?" are rather different, and would have very different responses...granted, both are pretty stupid questions.
