The Icelander: Men outnumber women in engineering and business degrees. Women outnumber men in psychology and teaching degrees. Engineers and managers make more money than psychologists and teachers.

In other words: Women can make more money if they choose careers that make more money.

This.

One is just easier to measure then others.

Plus, a guy can have a weener that looks like a button on a fur coat, and you can't tell when he's walking down the street. Unfortunately, my killer b's are obvious to anyone who looks at me. Now we're talking unfair.

Srsly, though -- the problem here comes down to our current understanding of the value of Force vs. Power and seeing power as being external to ourselves (in essence, Force) rather than internal.

Males, with all that testosterone mucking up their brains, are by nature more assertive...or aggressive. This is why, in a typical state prison population, 93% of the prisoners are male and only 7% are female.

If you ever need a bright-line illustration of how much more combative and anti-social men are than women, well, that little fact usually does the trick.

And there's more to it even than that... for example:
Of the male prisoners, the majority of them are incarcerated for violent crimes.

Of the female prisoners, the VAST majority of them are incarcerated for nonviolent crimes (dealing and doing drugs, repeatedly DUI, child neglect, theft).

Clearly external power is a much bigger priority for those whose thought patterns are influenced by testosterone than it is for those whose thought patterns are influenced by estrogen.

Estrogen inclines one toward nurturing cooperation and communitarianism as opposed to the traditional top-down heirarchical power structures we typically see in the corporate world. Coincidence that that structure was put in place by men?

Of course not.

So, really, until we completely rearrange our thinking in a way that recognizes the feminine approach as being equally if not more valid than the traditional male approach, expecting women to rise to the top of those kinds of structures is cramming a curvy peg into an angular hole. It's just not a fit...nor would we really want it to be.

The Carly Fiorinas and Maggie Thatchers of the world succeed because they masculinze themselves and conform to the expectations of the male-dominated power structure. They do nothing to promote cooperation over competition.

If you want to see a woman doing what women do best in a more feminized power structure, look at Oprah, or look at any well-run elementary school classroom. It's very different from the way say... a Donald Trump or a Rupert Murdoch would run things.

Now really -- do you seriously believe I hate men?

Au contraire, mon cher -- I just dislike the narrowness and constraints of our current patriarchal old-boy-network way of doing things in this world. It doesn't work well for women. Things are imbalanced in favor of men (including "in favor of their ending up behind bars for committing violent crimes"). It is this imbalance that I 'hate' and seek to correct.

Would you agree there's some room for improvement to the system there? A little room for mutually beneficial rebalancing so that our collective cultural car is running on all 4 wheels rather than just two?

Whenever life gets you down,
keeps you wearing a frown,
and the gravy train has left you behind...
and when you're all out of hope,
down at the end of your rope,
and nobody's there to throw you a line...
If you ever get so low
that you don't know which way to go
come on and take a walk in my shoes...
Never worry 'bout a thing
got the world on a string
Cause I've got the cure for all of my blues.

(CHORUS)
I take a look at my enormous penis
and my troubles start melting away.
I take a look at my enormous penis
and the happy times are coming to stay.

I gotta sing and I dance
when I glance in my pants
and the feeling's like a sunshiney day...
I take a look at my enormous penis
and everything is going my way.

(CHORUS)
I take a look at my enormous penis
and my troubles start melting away.
I take a look at my enormous penis
and the happy times are coming to stay.

Yeah I got great big amounts
in the place where it counts
and the feeling's like a sunshiney day...
I take a look at my enormous penis
and everything is going my way.

Everything is going my way...

There are perfectly logical and downright economically viable reasons that women make less than men by many comparisons. As has been stated already there is the issue of convenience vs pay. With MOST women taking time off for maternity leave and child rearing related issues, they would in fact receive an effective pay cut for their time away. Let not forget that the time for maternity leave can be quite extended. While legally it is a only a few months, many women take the time (often years) to raise their children at home as housewives (as they should). This has a twofold effect on their careers. One is that they are gone from the job thus stopping their pay escalation. When they return, all other things equal, they are the same age a a man that was the same age when she took leave, however HE stayed, got annual raises, promotions, job training, etc. So, his pay alone would be higher just because he now has MORE EXPERIENCE.

One thing you won't see in that article is any mention of years of experience. The same two people, man and woman, of the same age can have vastly different levels of experience. There's no reason for a man to be absent form the workforce for more that a month at a time. While the reasons are many for women - most surrounding their biological clock and the ensuing child bearing/rearing time.

Its perfectly acceptable to pay some one with more experience more than someone without the same experience. While away for a year caring for her infant, the same working man will stay up to times with company policy, networking, raises and promotions, job training, etc. When SHE comes back to work it may take her quite a while just to get caught up and back in the swing of things. There is this natural experience gap that leads tot he difference in pay scales. For many women, if they take a few years off, they can never get caught up the guy who stayed working the whole time - regardless of age, career field, education, etc. Its all about experience and longevity.

Lets also consider that many women that go back to work, may take a part time position to continue with child rearing. They may even take an entirely different job that is more flexible with their now hectic schedules. The same situation exists here where a man that has held a job since he exited college (with no time away) will have years more experience with any particular job than a woman who just got into that position - possibly after a long absent stint from any workforce and also after changing career fields. She has less experience and know how.

I don't have time to go into all the details, but suffice it to say that although there may be discrimination in some workplaces, lets not blame it on gender all the time - there is a legitimate economic reason why women often appear to get paid less then men of the same age.

Seriously, though, FTFA:
"· Gender pay gap among managers on rise again
· Number of senior women quitting also on increase "

Umm. . . durr? They seriously can't figure out that the two might somehow, in this weird, mathematical sense, be connected?

ZekeMacNeil [TotalFark] -- Looking at this from a wider perspective, there are also definite liabilities...

To wit, men:
1) are more likely to commit and/or become a victim of a violent crime
2) have higher rates of colon cancer, heart disease, psychosis, and many other physical and mental health conditions
3) have a shorter life expectancy than women by about 6.5 years
4) are more likely to smoke and/or drink to excess
5) are more likely to die in a work-related accident (due to dangerous/risky jobs) or a traffic accident (due to riskier driving habits)
6) are more likely to commit suicide

/penis ownership may have its privileges, but it also has definite drawbacks

Whores, strippers and waitresses don't have to claim their wages. I'm sure that makes a pretty big dent in their so called "earnings".

Also, if we added up all the free rent, meals, movies, entertainment, jewelry, flowers, cars, houses then you will probably see that while men EARN the money, more of it is spent by women.

Yeah, keep biatching women, one day you may actually get equality but I doubt you're going to like it.
