That's rather ironic, considering the history of Liberia.

thamike: Libertarians read books?

Of course we do. You have to really love books to be able to force yourself through a Rand "novel".

/libertarian
//can't stand Rand's books
///her non-fiction essays make for decent reading, though

Rand wasn't a libertarian. Quite the opposite, in fact. She was a Vulcan.

I fail to see what the problem is.

- United States offers emergency sanctuary program to help get Liberians out of their war-torn country and into a place of safety.
- These Liberians do not qualify for refugee status or permanent resident alien status, and thus cannot stay here permanently; it's strictly a temporary humanitarian measure.
- The war has ended and the country is relatively stable. Thus, there is no compelling reason for these people to claim emergency sanctuary.
- "The economy sucks over there; we don't want to go back." isn't sufficient grounds to claim emergency sanctuary.

If they like it here so much, apply for a green card, US citizenship, or refugee status. They'll have to wait in line, though -- there are already gobs of people from all over the world who are trying to immigrate to the United States, so INS is a bit backlogged.

Perhaps if these Liberians return to their country, they could become active in the economy, start businesses, and spark significant change in their country.

What is it with African nations having a tendency to suck horribly when it comes to their economy? The continent has vast natural resources, a large number of able-bodied people, large navigable coastlines, a diverse climate suitable for growing many crops, close proximity to Europe, the Middle East, and land and sea trade routes to East Asia. Is there a lack of entrepreneurs or something?

/stupid corruption and mismanagement of the countries seems to be driving them into the crapper.

We need to send Haliburton in to help those people!!!

///muhahaha

Meh. I imagine most Liberians will just ignore the US government and continue to work and live in the US. More power to them for wanting to raise their families in safety and security.

Do you think Pat Robertson can be nabbed for supporting terrorism? I would laugh a hearty laugh if this were the case.

You beat me to it. Charles Taylor ruined Liberia, and set up child militias. Pat Robertson had no problem with that, because Taylor is Baptist...

One small question:

If you are Liberian, a descendant of repatriated former slave, and you come to the US, legally/illegally doesn't really matter, would you be entitled to reparation money if race-baiter's Jackson and Sharpton had their way?

And this is exactly the spirit the Statue of Liberty is supposed to embody: "Liberty enlightening the World." Emma Lazarus turned it upside down by saying send us your wretched refuse. Originally, it was thanks from France for setting an example allowing other countries to reform themselves.

What'll probably happen is the Citizenship and Immigration Services will issue them a "party's over, go home" letter first. They will be reminded that they will start to accrue 'unlawful presence' the day after Temporary Protected Status expires. If you remain in the US after 6 months of unlawful presence, there is a 3 year bar on future immigration benefits (new visas, green cards, etc.). A year or more unlawful presence creates a 10 year bar.

Depending on how bored they are, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE, ICE baby) will start showing up at residences and/or places of employment and taking people into custody.

I also imagine that a lot of Liberians are going to be proposing marriage to US citizens in the next few weeks.

Better story, with actual impacts.

About 3000-5000 people in Minnesota suddenly having to sell their homes, quit their jobs/close their businesses and leave might just slightly suck for the state's economy.

Considering the luck we've had this year, it's par for the course.
