Is it really epic, if one team is way overrated and one is a defending national champion?

It is if you're ranked 5 in the country in 1-A. You're supposed to be able to handle 99% of the college football world.

So either it's an epic fail, or Michigan just sucks. Personally, I'm kinda thinking it's a lot of both.

What scares me is that Michigan still got votes in both polls. AP's not as bad, as with 39 points at least 26 voters didn't rank them at all. In the Coaches' Poll, however, they got 132 points from 62 voters -- that means at least 8 voters ranked them 23rd or higher. Since it seems likely that it wasn't 54 24th place and 8 23rd place votes, I'd REALLY like to see which 5 or 6 teams a voter or two put them ahead of. BC? Arkansas? GA Tech? Clemson?

Look, voters: You can always put them back in if they give you any reason to. Really. Just admit you were flat-out wrong about them and move on with your lives.

It is just ANOTHER reason why there should be NO FARKING POLLS unti some games have been played.

It was damn obvious that UM isn't #5 in their STATE, let alone the nation.

Well, in fairness I think they're better than Eastern Michigan. They only had 145 yards total against Pitt.

What's amazing is that no matter what one's position is on the polls, the bowls, the elusive playoff, or any given team's ranking in the polls, EVERYONE recognizes that polls shouldn't start until after some games have played. I recall one year where after week six or so the rankings were 1: FSU, 2: OSU. FSU had not played a team with a winning record and all of OSU's opponents were at the time or had been ranked. Even Bobby Bowden, that year, said (roughly) "Of course the polls shouldn't come out at the beginning of the season, and if they didn't, we wouldn't be ranked ahead of Ohio State." Yet, it's the one change that those who conduct the polls refuse to make.

It's not like they even sell magazines.

On one hand, I'd like Michigan to lose until they dump Carr and English for coaches that can motivate the team to play to their ability...

...but as ungracious as Michigan haters have been since Saturday, particularly Penn State, tOSU, and MSU fans, I think I'd rather have the Wolverines sweep the rest of the games.

Who's with me, Michigan fans? Do we bookmark these threads and bring their own words up when their team gets beat by the team that lost to their cupcake?

I'm still puzzled that the media hasn't picked up on the apparent "Bo Schembechler Curse" angle. Maybe three losses in a row aren't enough to declare it yet, but since you all figure we'll lose the rest of our games, since App State is such a bunch of pussies (paraphrasing the haters, there), and nobody else the Big Ten would have lost to them, nor any other team in Div 1-A.

If we beat Oregon this weekend, then what? What does it mean? Either Michigan was an overranked team beaten by a better team (in which case, Oregon and any team that loses to us is even WORSE), or we are a talented, great team that just played crappy on their opener.

If we lose to Oregon, I think the pressure mounts on Carr and his staff, and the media should, maybe, begin seriously looking at the fact that we hadn't won a game since the Michigan legend passed away (is it possible Carr was "ghost coaching" all these years, relying on Bo's advice to run the team? Now that he's gone, so has Carr's ability to run the team?).

Wow.... I still have mine. Most fans were throwing their stubs out on the way out of the stadium.

Michigan can go 11-1 this year and they'll still be a joke.

Especially after they lose the Rose Bowl again.

It's expected that Fark threads are thick with strawmen, but some of these statements are just plain moronic.

Whoever loses to Michigan this year should be embarrassed enough, by your logic, to ask for the NCAA death penalty, because their team, losing to the "joke" as you put it, is obviously worse.

I am guessing Michigan was concentrating on the Oregon game before last Saturday.

Good News Michigan...I was at the Oregon game Saturday and unless you run an offense a Pop Warner team could stop, you will likely put up 45+ points.

Oregon's defense could be the worst in the nation.

The offense isn't all that good either with a QB who the coaches know is too afraid to throw so they run run run the whole game. 15 passing attempts in the victory last week. 15 FOR THE GAME. Ridiculous.

I see Oregon as about a 4-8 ... 5-7...at best 6-6 team...It is my alma matar and it makes me sad to think that, but they are really really bad.

This is another of many examples why preseason rankings are dogshiat. They should wait until after 3-4 weeks into the season.

As a PSU Student and season ticket holder, it's pretty refreshing to know that our next 3 games are against the QB-less Notre Dame, the rank 119 out of 119 Buffalo, and Michigan, who can't beat a 1-AA team in The Big House.

The polls that actually matter come out 3-4 weeks into the season.

srhp29: I am guessing Michigan was concentrating on the Oregon game before last Saturday.

I think you're right, though ASU played an amazing first half, and a decent enough 2nd half, and was obviously very well coached and prepared. And that QB looked like, well, he looked like Troy Smith all over again with his speed, elusiveness and an arm even on the run (that throw back to the middle on the run on the last drive was a ridiculously hard throw and it was right on the money). Plenty of schools have to be kicking themselves for not getting him, but then again, Troy Smith was almost an afterthought for OSU when they offered him, so maybe the 6 foot, undersized speedy QB is something that some programs might want to take a few more chances on, no?

If he gets the balls to throw it and Oregon spreads it out, we could get another one of those 54-51 barnburners that Michigan played (and lost) to N'western about 7 years ago. If they do nothing but run it with only the occasional pass, well, Michigan usually knows how to defend a team that runs it too much, unless they have multiple future NFL running backs (see: Minnesota a few years ago). I suspect Oregon just didn't want to unleash the dragon in their first game to avoid giving Michigan too much tape to watch.

I wondered about that myself...but the Oregon QB looks to be the same guy he was most of last season...I will keep my fingers crossed.

sertman: the rank 119 out of 119 Buffalo

Buffalo stinks, but you already played #119 out of 119 in your opener. FIU is beyond terrible. I don't even know if they could even make the 1-AA playoffs (I question this with Buffalo as well, but they are better than FIU). In fact, only a few years ago they were actually in 1-AA, and they never compiled a winning record while there, let alone qualify for the playoffs. They didn't even come with 5 or 6 games of it. So actually, I wonder if they could even make the Division II playoffs.

The only thing FIU is good for is the famous Ned and his role in the fight with Miami last year.

Add in the fact that their RBs are exactly as dominant as he said would dominate them...I feel good about it (except for the feeling that it's really going to make them crazy this week and Michigan will come out with everything they have plus some).

BTW, everyone, in the Sagarin rankings at the end of last year, which include I-AA teams, Appalachian State was ranked higher than teams like Alabama, Purdue, Vanderbilt, Michigan State, Indiana, etc. Sure, we'd all make fun of Michigan for losing to those teams, but not nearly this much.

I was going by the ESPN.com preseason rankings. What's funny is that the list goes:
#117: FIU
#118: Temple
#119: Buffalo

and we play all 3 :) hey at least we schedule games against bad I-A teams instead of good I-AA teams!

Heh, yeah.... I have a chance of going to this weekend's game too. I wonder, though, how many Wolverine fans will "boycott" and how many haters will fill the stands just to cheer against Michigan?

So many ticket holders skipped the ASU game, thinking it was going to be a cupcake blowout, and App State fans snapped up the tickets. They were certainly vocal enough, perhaps too much so, as they didn't seem to grasp the concept of the National Anthem and raising the flag enough to quiet down.

Ah well, unlike those driving cars with Michigan plates in Columbus (whether or not they were Buckeye alums), none of the App State fans were molested in Ann Arbor, nor did a single one of them suffer getting keyed. That's something that's lot on the haters, because to hear them justify their violence, vandalism, and vitriol against Michigan fans, "we just deserve it" for being so smug we won't threaten and assault them when they come our way.

That sums up the relatively recent success of the programs at FSU and the University of Miami. Those guys play complete trash, and win championships.
At least, they used to, until the teams started to play in a conference that had more than one other good team.

What idiots said that? Just because Michigan sucks, doesn't mean App State can't beat any other 1A team... they'd beat probably half of them more often than not.

Actually it could mean that Oregon has one of the worst defenses in college football. Which, they may. They certainly weren't all-out impressive against Houston, though their offense should be able to score on Michigan (even though the QB sucks, and is a nervous wreck in any big games, he's a QB with speed, so Oregon's offense could be fine).
