HYpersapien: Feral anything can be a bit of a problem in Australia. Anything that goes feral around here tends to become much more psychotic and destructive than normal. Feral camels tend to do a lot of damage to fences and so on.

As for the people up in arms about eating cats: DIAF. They're a feral pest that kills native wildlife. They don't belong here wild.

Mind you, I'd want to make sure the cat was damn clean before I ate it - cat parasties are nasty.

I think it is because they are seen as pets. Thus it would feel like eating one of your family members and although my dad would have a lot of fat to be made into crackling I couldn't stomach eating him.

This is the same as the fat man down the road. No he is not my father but he is like my father. So eating a cat that is not your pet would bring up too many connections with eating your own cat.

The pet connection is one aspect, the other issue is that we dont' tend to consume predators in western society. Probably because they tend to acquire more nasty parasites and whatnot.

Meh, most people don't think much of eating rabbits, and they are both cute and cuddly, AND kept as pets. In fact, in rural Croatia in the past, it was commonplace to keep rabbits as pets, and cull them and eat them as they breed. They do a similar thing with Guinea pigs in Peru to this day.

I think there's more to it than just the "pet factor", in the case of cats and dogs. I think the fact that cats and dogs seem to "respond to human affection" makes a big difference. Yes, I know it's not necessarily a "real" emotional connection, especially with cats - they just hang around you coz you're feeding them. But still, cats and dogs are seen as responding/connecting to people in a way in which a rabbit or a lamb doesn't.

So yeah, it's because they're seen as pets, and a special "higher level" of pet at that.

LOL, Reminds me of a story my friend told me, lets call him Sean:

Sean's dad owned a pet snake and sean's mom told him to get rid of it or she will. He said if the snake dissapears, the cat dissapears. Sean's twin helped his mom get rid of the snake in provo river and When the twin told Sean, that info finds it's way to the dad.

So Sean's dad took him camping and brings along the cat... Introduces him to hunting in the most farked up way possible, his mom's pet.

So, anyways, the Dad ate most of the cat and sean only had the white meat...

At the end of this story, I was thinking, "Yup, his family is more disfunctional than mine."

Hey, I farked that up pretty well!

Damn straight, we should be using any means nessesary to remove our feral animals. Especialy cats, unlike foxes they can climb trees to get at nests and have led to the extinction of many bird and small mammal species. The worse thing is they go feral and after a few generations they get huge. And their kidneys concentrate their urine so they can thrive out in the arid regions. We need a mixitosis(sp?) like virus to take em out, but they kitty lovers would never let it through.

But first we ned to stop the toad. Getting closer to the southwest every month.
