Might want to make that NSFW based on that last album cover.

If your boss can spot a boobie of that size by glancing over your shoulder, you shouldn't read Fark at the office.

Not a bad list, but they definitely picked the wrong VU album:

www.taxi-driver.it

I can understand regarding the third album in a hipper-than-thou sort of hindsight, but hey...

2007-08-31 04:18:48 PM
hey - i actually agree with most of these!

+1 for Richard & Linda Thompson and Nick Drake!

2007-08-31 04:38:36 PM
I don't own a single one of these albums.
But I do have some Miles Davis and Nick Drake songs on my iTunes playlist, does that count?

2007-08-31 05:00:51 PM
I only looked at the list to make sure My Bloody Valentine is on there.

/they are
//wrong CD though.

The Fragile, Nine Inch Nails

Your favorite artist sucks.

Pet Sounds
anything by Joy Division
the Operation Ivy record

No? Anyone?

To call "Kind of Blue" a commercial bomb is completely idiotic. Almost as idiotic is to put it into perspective by comparing its sales to Michael Jackson's "Thriller."

DING! This is just a weird list. Some he nails, others wtf?

Isn't Anything didn't bomb.

It was an indie album, not major label. It sold very well for an indie album. Very, very well. Not bad for a record that took 6 weeks to record on borrowed equipment.

onezero:

OK, I'll play.

Pet Sounds

That bombed commercially? I don't know. Obviously one of the most influential there is.

anything by Joy Division

Sold decently, at least in the UK.

the Operation Ivy record

It's hard for me to call something with such limited production and distribution a "bomb." It wasn't like people weren't buying it, it was that there weren't that many to buy. Definitely very influential, no doubt there (pun intended).

RTA - They didn't pick the first two because those actually charted. Also, White Light/White Heat would be the hipper than thou choice.

I would actually agree, though, and go with VU/Nico for them, Pink Moon for Nick Drake, Loveless for My Bloody Valentine, and Come on Pilgrim for the Pixies.

Farked. Or at least not loading for me.

So did they, or did they not have any Cabaret Voltaire albums on there?

2007-08-31 06:09:05 PM
Finally, a list I actually agree with. my personal contribution to the list is pretty much anything of the "krautrock" era: Amon Duul, Can, Neu!, etc.

Gonna be some elitist schitt being shoveled shortly.

MC5 - Kick Out the Jams

in case farkedness continues...

1. The Kinks - The Village Green Preservation Society
2. Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground
3. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
4. Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left
5. Wire - Pink Flag
6. My Bloody Valentine
7. Robert Johnson - King of the Delta Blues Singers
8. Richard and Linda Thompson I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight
9. Iggy Pop and the Stooges Funhouse
10. Pixies Surfer Rosa

2007-08-31 06:10:19 PM
The nice thing about subscribing Rhapsody is that I will listen to all of these albums right now.

"Owning" music no longer makes sense, imo. There is too much out there to listen too and as it is all available instantly via the interwebs, why not do it this way?

Is this the thread were we drudge up some "obscure" album from our collections to show how hip and edgy we are?

/I expected to see Jellybean Bonanza's "Shaken Through a Rat Maze" on this list. Easilly one of the most influential albums of all time. Sigh.

Relax (Black) Francis

I have a friend of a friend that just legally changed his name to Frank Black. I tell him, "No, you can't, it's taken."
He hadn't even heard of the Pixies.

2007-08-31 06:11:06 PM
This list neatly divides between records I totally love (Bright Lights, Pink Flag, Village Green) and records I totally despise (Five Leaves, Isn't Anything, Surfer Rosa). Which makes sense - a great work should elicit strong feelings - and sometimes that feeling will be loathing.

My parents are Mormons, and I got that album when I was like 12. My mom found it, and took a sharpie to give her a "dress." Mormons are weird.

/She did the same thing with Star Wars, ferchrissakes.
//This was the cover. OMG LEGZ!!!1111!!!1!

Pretty good/insightful list IMHO. Velvet Underground FTW! Seriously, that album is amazing - the first time you hear it, and the 100th, it still sounds good.

Nah, it actually did fairly well. Smile, now, that's the one. The story goes that Brian and the guys walked into a radio station in L.A. with Heroes and Villains one night about 11:00 to give them a surprise world exclusive, and the D.J. on duty in the booth turned around and said "sorry, I can't play anything that's not on the list." Part of what broke Brian's spirit on Smile.

/the story also goes on that after someone had gotten the station manager on the phone he told the D.J. to put the record on immediately, and then go get in his car, and go home, he was fired.

IS IT? I want to play! I have the first three on vinyl - Kinks and Miles are early pressings, too. But really, my most overlooked and awesome album is Meco Manardo's Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk. It's an awe inspiring masterpiece. In the sense that it will drive you insane if you actually try to listen to it seriously for more than five minutes. Like BMulligan said, masterpieces evoke strong emotion. I think insanity is a pretty strong emotion.

BMulligan: a great work should elicit strong feelings - and sometimes that feeling will be loathing.

I've been saying something similar for a while. Good music shouldn't just make you happy. Sometimes it makes you angry, annoyed, or as axd mentioned, insane.

2007-08-31 06:20:44 PM
Definitely don't agree with "Kind of Blue" being on the list. I have owned it on three different formats. I mean, it's a jazz album for farks sake.

Matthew Sweet, Girlfriend
Little Feat, pretty much anything in their catalog
Living Colour, Times Up

/Now That's What I Call Music 14 (underrated)
