I'm an accomplished tapdancer, so I'm not getting a kick out of these replies. I'm never gonna take a crap in a public restroom again.

What, exactly, is the big deal here?

Is it because he's just a great big homo?

"Well, you're not being truthful with me, I'm kind-of disappointed with you, Senator," said Karsnia.

The investigator explained to Craig that he is trying to treat everyone with dignity.

But not trying too hard.

2007-08-30 07:09:20 PM
"Have you been successful in these bathrooms here before?" asked Karsnia.

"I go to that bathroom regularly," said Craig.

Classic!

And just how many times have you been arrested for soliciting sex in a public bathroom?

Lying to a cop is the worst thing you can do in this kind of situation. Either tell him the whole truth...or keep your damn mouth shut and wait for a lawyer.

The cops want you to think that lying to them is the worst thing you can do. I can think of one thing that is worse: telling them the truth when you are guilty as sin. He's not going to do you any favors for being honest--he just wants you to confess and make his job easier.

Craig corroborated the cop's testimony, on tape. What a dumbass. He should have just kept his mouth shut and given his lawyers a chance to pick holes in the cop's account. It's the prosecution's burden to prove that Craig did these things. How were they going to do this, without Craig's admission? Presumably they didn't film the entire thing. All they had was his admission on tape, which he gave them freely, like an idiot.

2007-08-30 07:12:52 PM
I think if the cop had any sort of motivation other than doing his job, we would have been listening to this audio on June 12th.

2007-08-30 07:14:14 PM
What is funny about this is Craig actually thinks everyone will believe his lies. What isn't funny is that about 33% of the population is ignorant enough to do just that.

I don't care if he is gay or straight or if he eats at McDonalds, but I can't take the lying. What a dink.

2007-08-30 07:14:15 PM
I just wanted to say that the creepiest part of this whole thing is his insistence that he was reaching down to pick up a piece of toilet paper off the floor of a public men's room. Yeach! I mean, any guy that would do that (other than a janitor wearing gloves) probably would engage in random dick sucking.

mindbuzz:

It can't be re-opened pending new evidence, the tape, that he was entrapped?

That would be the absolute worst thing that could possibly happen for him. Yesterday, I googled for "bathroom sex signals" and the top result was a couple of "cruising lifestyle" sites that most straight guys and suburbanites would have run screaming from. Today, the same search (poppy, SFW) brings up a very well-written article that pretty much slam-dunks the fact that the Senator was not entrapped and is as gay as a maypole. If he were put on the stand the prosecution would pretty much consist of this: "Senator, can you explain how you managed to accidentally and repeatedly enact a complicated series of movements and gestures that has been used for decades by gay homosexuals to indicate a willingness to engage in toilet sodomy?"

Doesn't mean I wouldn't love to see that happen, tho...

So is tapping someone's foot at a bar or sliding your fingers across the bar in front of someone to try and hook up illegal too? Was there a discussion of money for sex?

Badafuco: So is tapping someone's foot at a bar or sliding your fingers across the bar in front of someone to try and hook up illegal too? Was there a discussion of money for sex?

I suppose if you went to town right on the bar, yeah, that would be illegal. Actually, I'm pretty sure it's illegal in the bathroom of a bar as well.

2007-08-30 07:18:26 PM
How farking pissed off must this cop's bosses have been that he got assigned to patrol the restrooms at the Minneapolis airport? Sounds like the sort of job they assign when they want you to quit.

Ya, when you break the law you should never tell the truth when you are caught and you know it. The only thing better for society than a bunch of criminals is a jammed up investigation and court process. Who's side are you on?

It doesn't sound like a good queer trap case. What a creepy job though trying to hook up with pervs in the men's room....

JohnnyC: I listened to the audio and the only think I can figure is that the guy reached down with his right hand to pick up the piece of paper and perhaps braced himself for leaning down by grasping the wall of the stall with his left but doesn't really remember doing it since it would be an unconscious thing to do.

I just don't understand where it in any way sounds like he was trying to get laid? *shrug*

I really don't know why he would talk to the cop other than that he was full of himself and thought that he could talk his way out of it because he was a senator. If he would have kept his mouth shut, he would have gotten off (no pun intended). Although it would have been a bit of a scandal, if he would have shut up and insinuated the arrest was politically motivated, he would have been far better off. Especially since what the cop describes sounds like it could be interpreted as innocent, or certainly not some coded message for sex in the restroom.

I didn't know it was prostitution, I thought it was just gay sex in an odd location. How do the hookers get past security every day? Maybe I missed that part.

The matter's been settled. At this point, he's stuck with the judgment. The bell can't be unrung.

I am not a lawyer, but I just saw on the news that he has retained a lawyer and will try to have it reopened.

Even if I was gay I would not want some dude tapping his foot over against mine and reaching under the damned stall - that is unless I was NOT going to the john to take a dump but to have some sort of sex in a bathroom stall (sick no matter who or what you partner up with). THAT is the whole point of this, his conduct had no legitimate purpose and the law is to keep this from happening to you, your kids, etc.

I love how pissed the cop got in the end when he was just trying to get him to tell the truth and then Craig more or less told the cop he was lying:
"Well you saw something that didn't happen."

DeKoquonut writes: What isn't funny is that about 33% of the population is ignorant enough to [believe Craig's lies].

I'm not sure ignorance is the right word. Well, in some cases it probably is...but a lot of people will believe the lies because they want to believe the lies.

Craig's excuses here are about as credible as George Allen's claim that he made up the word "macaca" on the spot...despite the fact it's a well-known racial slur from his mother's home.

I have often been accused of this kind of thing in bathroom stalls and I have a staff of really good lawyers who get me out of these misundestandings every time.

As I read this (and listened to the audio) I wondered who the fark would pick up toilet paper or anything else off the floor of a public restroom? The whole reason they put all those motion sensors on toilets, sinks and towel dispensers is because nobody wants to touch ANYTHING in a public restroom other than your own parts. I guess Sen. Craig wanted to tidy the place up?

Even if all the allegations were true, what would be wrong with it? Lots of people want to give/get anonymous head, why does this make a pariah?

I have to say, this cop has enormous balls. He sounded a little nervous, however, he is interrogating a senator for soliciting gay sex in an airport bathroom.

miss bliss: "I tend to spread my legs when I lower my pants so they won't slide."
yuuucky. what a horrible mental image.

So what do you do to keep your pants from falling completely to the floor in a public bathroom? 'Cause even in the ladies' room at an airport, you don't want to touch the floor or touch anything that touched the floor (my wife confirms this).

Which leads me to hole #1 in the Senator's argument: if he's so concerned about his pants not touching the floor that he sits with his legs wide, then he sure isn't going to touch the floor to pick up a piece of toilet paper. People of his stature figure that's what they pay the custodial staff to do.

He can try...but it's not gonna happen.

Courts are generally careful not to accept a guilty plea unless it can be determined that the defendant thoroughly understands the consequences of his decision. Unless Craig can demonstrate that he was deprived of some right, I don't see how a court would even entertain the notion.

In 1982 after a congressional page wrote a book about gay congressmen having sex with them, Larry Craig out of the blue denies it even though no names were named. He says, "I'm not gay."

I'm almost convinced, I think he just needs to say it some more.

"Once upon a daytime dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious perps of forgotten lore,
While I waited, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping on the adjacent bathroom stall floor.
`'Tis some pervert,' I muttered, `tapping on the bathroom floor -
Only this, and nothing more.'"

mindbuzz: It sounds as though the policeman was trying to give the Senator a break, but then after the Senator's explanation was like, "Come on, dude, you know what was up. Don't try to play me for fool."

They always try to make it sound like they are trying to give you a break, and it's BS. I've known a cop that caught a teenager with a roach, brought him to his parents, and told them nothing would happen if the kid "cooperated" with police. The parents wanted to do the right thing and cooperate so "nothing would happen," so they gave permission to search the kid's room. The cop then found a bag in the bedroom. A few weeks later, he threatened to press charges for the bag (which was way more serious than possession of the roach) unless the kid identified where he got it and bought a bag from the dealer while wired. The cop never lied because that was his definition of "cooperate." He even threatened that the cops could seize the parents home (which is pretty much BS, but arguably isn't a flat out lie). They lawyered up at this point, but that's what you get if you "cooperate" with police when you're busted. Where would the cop has stopped? Would he have wanted the kid to bust a coke dealer the next week and eventually get the kid shot?

fenrael23: bitteroldman: I doubt the cop had any political agenda

I didn't mean to imply that there were political motivations on the cop's behalf, but the whole "this is embarrassing. People vote for you." soapbox moment seemed a bit strange to me.

Not really. Cops always try to appeal to the perp to confess in any personal way they can.

This guy will end up doing a whole bunch of goodwill for the G&L community inspite of his congressional voting.
The closeted community will get smaller and smaller. Who wants to end up looking like this fool? He must be suffering, I wonder what causes him to toss and turn more at night?

a) that he chose early on to hide his natural tendencies
b) that he finally got caught

I hope he realizes that he could have had a completely different life. He could probably pinpoint 1 or 2 life altering decisions he made in college that eventually led to the closet. He could have been a pillar in the gay community, now he never, ever will be. Sad, really.

I think it was entrapment, and I think there are way bigger crimes we should be addressing in this country than gays playing bathroom touchy-touchy.

I'd normally feel pretty sorry for the guy. Not in this case, though, because he's clearly a closeted gay, socially conservative anti-gay politician, which makes him the worst kind of farking hypocrite. Reap what you sow, you self-hating bigot.
