Potential to be completely frickin' awesome - and I am NOT a Jack Black fanboy.

I just love the concept.

Beats having some craptacular suckfest IV....

dude ..finally an original comedy ..or movie in general for that matter . plus old jack is back , hopefully it will be a repeat watcher like school of rock .

All Jack Black threads cause Tenacious D songs to loop continuously in my head. I was already an insomniac, but now I'll be a psychotic one.

Michel Gondry is a god!!!

Jack Black and Mos Def ain't too shabby either.

wow, that was the worst headline ever, but sure enough, it was posted. thanks guys for completely shaking my belief in what gets posted and what doesnt.

as for the movie, i'm looking forward to it. i like michel (i mispelled in the headline =P) gondry, and jack black is pretty funny. mos def is a good actor, and its nice to see that danny glover is still alive.

my only concern is that they wont address the little fact that no one uses VHS anymore. hopefully they'll just mention that this happeened in 1995 or something.

/submitter, in case you didnt pick up on that
//still cant think of a witty headline for it.

2007-08-27 01:59:15 AM
Jack Black is the annoying kid in school who nobody really likes but you let him hang out because every once in a great while he says something funny.

Mos Def and Danny Glover are great.

Wabash: Michel Gondry is a god!!!

Agreed.

Jack Black and Mos Def ain't too shabby either.

AGREED!

I hate getting too excited but I think it at least looks original and entertaining.

Any movie that creates an excuse to give Jack Black a handycam and a license to just run wild is fine with me

2007-08-27 02:02:32 AM
Science of Sleep vs. the ability to remake every 1980's movie possible in two hours. I'm really hoping the movie is better than the trailer, I'd hate to see Gondry sell out.

My grandparents didn't get a DVD player until last year. And even then it was only because it was a gift. Plenty of people still watch VHS tapes. I still have quite a few of my own that I haven't bothered replacing.

/the film looks awesome

Jack Black is my hero... and his birthday is Tuesday. Rig-a-goo-goo!

Looks like I found a reason to go to the movies in January.

2007-08-27 02:14:34 AM
If i am understanding correctly, the whole reason they have to remake the tapes is because the store has only one customer left: an old lady played by Mia Farrow, who probably only has a VCR. As for why they don't just close, I don't know.

I read a super-advanced "amateur" review on this a while ago, pretty sure it was on AICN, that said the film is pretty damn funny when they're trying to remake all of the old movies, and then pretty mediocre the rest of the time.

I love Gondry when he's working with someone else's material ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and his music videos, for example) but I'm not impressed when he's also the only writer. , Even though I had looked forward to it, "The Science of Sleep" bored me to sleep - literally. I fell asleep watching it. There was no STORY -- it was just a weak premise for Gondry to show off his neat camera tricks and art production skills.

And I see now that "Be Kind, Rewind" is another one of his creations as writer, so I'll most likely rent it unless it gets really amazing reviews. I don't know why some of these directors think they can write. Some of the greatest directors in history worked almost primarily with other people's screenplays. John Ford, Spielberg, Hitchcock, Wyler, Cukor, Howard Hawks, Clint Eastwood, Mike Nichols come to mind.

It's only the really rare ones that are equally successful at both writing and directing (Coppola, Kubrick, Woody Allen, some of Scorsese's films, and the Coen Bros. for example).

Shamalan's another guy that needs to hang up the typewriter and work with someone else's writing.

COMPLETE BOMB.

But since Jack Black is a friend of Rush... I like it!

2007-08-27 03:30:45 AM
I'll pay 10$ just for the "2001: A Space Odyssey" scene alone.

Though I'll go ahead and say it has high suckage potential.

//I still use VHS.
///You can get tapes of great old films for 99 cents in a lot of suprising places.

2007-08-27 03:51:56 AM
I hate Jack Black but even I think this could be alright. Probably worth a watch.

2007-08-27 03:53:10 AM
As a feel good movie, I think it has feel good movie of the year all over it!

2007-08-27 04:46:28 AM
ok, not to sound like a complete asshole, but really, walmart 37 dollars, dvd player. not just any dvd player, but one that plays dvd data disks. so like all that futurama that i have... from the um.. dvds... i guess, anyhow, all of those data files, onto one or two dvds, and i can watch them all on my tv. 37 dollars.

/ok, sounded like an asshole, but really

2007-08-27 05:23:18 AM
Michel Gondry and Jack Black? Yeah, that has major potential to rock out.

2007-08-27 05:36:01 AM
Might be good. Sounds very intriguing.

Unfortunately, Jack Black is involved in whatever small way, therefore I'm going to go poke my eyes out with a fork. That'll be more fun.

l'Art de Gondry: Take over-the-top, unfunny comedians and force an original concept down their throats. Edit thoroughly.

It'll work beautifully with this flick too, I'm sure.

Probably the same reason Frodo had to get to that volcano. BECAUSE IT'S A MOVIE.

Should be interesting with Gondry.

Yeah, Eternal Sunshine was SUCH a dismal failure. I wonder how he sleeps at night?

On a big pile of money with two beautiful women. Why do you ask?

jwmc1971: original

azmoviez: original

I think that's funny, because "original" was the first word that came to my mind, but its obvious that they're going to be literally doing other movies.

I'm really looking forward to seeing it, I just think its odd.

2007-08-27 10:18:11 AM
I'll take complete suckage for a thousand, Alex.

2007-08-27 10:54:27 AM
As with any film starring Black, it will both suck and rock.

2007-08-27 10:55:47 AM
Shouldn't the headline read (Sponsored Link)?

Because it sure as hell SEEMS like it is.

2007-08-27 11:54:07 AM
Hmmm. half suckage, half goodness.
i can't decide.
Interesting premise, but I think it would get tiring after a while of watching it.
And Gondrey doing a happy movie? Not a sad, somewhat-tortured, genius, weird-ass movie?
[cue. Eternal, his music videos]
I actually really liked Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
I watched it once at home, then a year later in a film class.
A very touching, interesting, sad/happy, drama/action/sci-fi/comedy movie. I wish I could describe it better. Oh and it has a good soundtrack, too.

2007-08-27 12:12:20 PM
doubleofive ...leave it to other people to point out what should have been obvious in the first place ..im sitting here watching the trailer going .." no ones done this before " missing the fact all their doing is RE-doing others work ..DOH ! anyway , good point .

2007-08-27 12:19:28 PM
The idea sounds funny, but the trailer was awful.

2007-08-27 12:44:38 PM
i came here to observe the Michel Gondry film snobs.

2007-08-27 02:31:44 PM
At least it is an original idea. Not sure about the execution.

2007-08-27 04:34:17 PM
I don't have time to read all the posts, so let me just say that if you all liked it, then I hated it because I am more culturally sophisticated than all of you.

If you all hated it, then I liked it, because I am more culturally sophisticated than all of you.

Any way, it has to be better than Nacho Libre, right?

After 6 years of indulging every pot induced brain-fart that creature called a film script...that unfunny fat sweaty ball of hair needs to make exactly ZERO more new movies.

2007-08-27 06:16:58 PM
So is Coach McGuirk going to be in this movie? Will it be done in Squiggle-Vision like the first season of the show, or Macromedia Flash like the later Adult Swim seasons?

2007-08-27 07:16:12 PM
To all you people saying this movie looks original, it's obviously just a mash up of Zoro and Titanic. Duh.

2007-08-27 07:42:09 PM
There is at least one redeeming feature of this movie:

Oh cool, they're using music from The Royal Tenenbaums near the beginning of the trailer.

I got my first real DVD player yesterday. It was a hand-me-down. Between the computer and the PS2, I saw no reason to buy one.

Jack Black is involved? I vote complete suckage, then.

I love Gondry's work. Part of his brilliance stems from his ability to surprise us by taking the seemingly mundane and making it absolutely extraordinary. Some of the actors he has worked with are no exception.

poot_rootbeer: So is Coach McGuirk going to be in this movie? Will it be done in Squiggle-Vision like the first season of the show, or Macromedia Flash like the later Adult Swim seasons?

Wow, I can not believe I never made that connection, and I own the Home Movies DVDs. So much for this movie being original.

Anyway, I'm going to go with decent movie, only because I loved Mos Def in Hitchhiker's Guide. I have no quarrel with Jack Black.

2007-08-28 02:06:52 PM
goddammit, i hate watching jack black, but if gondry can make jim carey look good, perhaps he can pull off another miracle.

2007-08-28 05:45:03 PM
Nacho Libre and Tenacious D, were two of the funniest movies i have ever seen.

2007-08-29 03:18:55 AM
watch those cellphones near video tapes! I bet that's how NASA lost the originals to the moon landing.

My favorite movie I saw jack black play in was jackal, when he got his arm blown off and died with that gun that bruce shot him with. I really really really hate jack black...
