This building was not so long ago erected in Minsk by a personal order of Belarus president Mr. Lukashenko. Locals joke: "Lukashenko had just learned to read and decided to build a library dedicated to this new ability he acquired."

I see that "our president can't read" jokes aren't restricted to the US. :D

I can see it appearing in a Daft Punk video, especially if it's directed by Michel Gondry.

I'm glad they've progressed past Stalinist modern (like US housing projects, or 1950s era US college dormitories) in the former Soviet bloc.

And I'm sorry teachers had to sacrifice (as usual), but I'd rather see a bold library than a publicly financed downtown ballpark!

I love the music in the video. it sounds like a cross between Napoleon Dynamite and Austin Powers.

This is where Russian architecture is going. Sad. Architecture is generally either a response to the previous style or an evolution of the previous style. In Russia, it's something much more confusing.

Tab is hard enough to find here in the 'states, but Russia? I'd consider myself lucky to find a case of Coca-Cola that wasn't some horrible local impostor.

Erofeev: Screw the architecture. Fifteen million books! I'm moving to Belarus and getting a library card.

"The National Library only has 8 million in its collection, so there should be plenty of space..."

You might also need a moped to move between the very spaced out bookshelves... since its about 7 Million short. Also have fun living in a former soviet bloc country whose GDP is beaten out per capita by countries half its population... and where school children are extorted to pay for giant gaudy libraries...

2007-08-25 09:50:38 PM
When completed, it'll be big enough to house a whopping 15 million books. The National Library only has 8 million in its collection, so there should be plenty of space leftover for restaurants, gyms, and for the president to roam the hallways in a black cloak, breathing Vader-like while dramatic music plays in the background."

I lol'd.

Just a side note, Belarus is not Russia. By all accounts, Russia is a better place to live.

First of all, Belarus got about 70% of Chernobyl's fallout. That can lower property values.

Second, Lukashenko is bat-poopy (is bat-feces better?) crazy. Forcing students to pay for a library that will sit half-empty, is fairly mild for him.

Erofeev: Screw the architecture. Fifteen million books! I'm moving to Belarus and getting a library card.

The article said that they had room for fifteen million books but the National Library currently only had eight million books.

Personally I can't decide if it's more hideous than the new Seattle central library. I would need to see if the interior has those awful concrete floors, neon green elevators and escalators, and in general looks like they ran out of money.

I am a cat-hating, cardigan-eschewing, straight/married with kids, no bun or butch cut hairdo librarian, and that thing is ugly. As a discotheque, it's got my vote. As a discotheque in Vegas, it's in the running. As a discotheque in space where the Rebel Alliance can boogie away their Empire-fightin' stress, it wins.
