sweet, i'll be needing these things soon since i'm moving to las vegas, and those sidewalks get ridiculously hot there

2007-08-25 03:42:02 AM
Not at all strange but very practical for dogs in the summer.

2007-08-25 03:54:38 AM
I prefer to see them do the hot tar dance...

/note that I do not really hold this opinion but I was trying to make a joke at the expense of our four legged friends who don't have the ability to make their own shoes, because if they did they would probably be of very poor quality and consist of St. Bernard slobber, twigs, a squeaky chew toy and possibly milk bones, which would result in a host of animals walking around sqeaking at every step and being chased by hungry mongrels or possibly even rabid squirrels

2007-08-25 04:07:56 AM
Yeah, I second the "not strange" position. How often do you walk around on city streets barefoot on hot days, subby?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a PETA freak by any stretch of the imagination, and I think people who put sweaters on their animals should be shot, personally. It's just that Fluffy's pads are built to keep his feet from being pierced, not scorched.

I just now RTFA. They look retarded, but I still think they're a good idea.

My dog has a girlfriend across the street.

He wants to know if they're available in high heels.

Dog boots are for making sure your mushing dog doesn't cut his paws, or get ice-balls between his toes.

The only thing about this is that my dog monster HATES to have anything insistent (like shoes or even hands) applied to her feet.

She won't be very happy if I try to put these on her.

Doggie accessories trifecta in play?

I actually could've used those last week. I went camping, and my dog stepped on some recently mowed down cactus & got a bunch of those tiny little thorns in her foot. She didn't yelp or anything, so I didn't notice until later, when she started limping. Anyway, the thorns were practically invisible amongst the paw-hair, and by the time she got the rest of them out, she'd licked her foot pretty raw...

So yeah, not really that bad of an idea. I can't imagine my dog leaving them on for more than a couple of minutes before she shreds them, though.

geetus: and by the time she got the rest of them out, she'd licked her foot pretty raw...

Not to get all PETA on you or anything but you should have noticed her licking her paws well before that.

Good place to find dog boots in general:
www.cabelas.com

If you use them, make sure at first to have something really wow fun to immediately distract them with. With dogs, bribery gets you everywhere, so steak might work.

Actually, they do come in mastiff size.
I've worked in pet retail for the last 15+ years - these things have been around forever. There is also a wax you can put on their paws that does essentially the same thing and is not really noticeable.

I second this. And, Cabela's rocks.

That "mystery goo" the DOT spreads on the roads in the winter is downright caustic to pooch paws. Sidewalk ice melt is just as bad.

I pulled as many of those tiny little cactus thorns out as I could, but couldn't quite get all of them - she had to do some of the work, but she managed to make things pretty raw in the process.

I doctored her up, though - hydrogen peroxide, neosporin with pain relief, and a few layers of gauze, plus a solid night of rest after we got home that evening pretty much took care of it well enough for her to walk on it the next day (around the house, at least).

/fairly responsible dog owner

All I know is Rudy wore them as much as, if not more than those dogs. You could say that in a sense, he was one with them.

We live in central Texas and my kids always want to take the dogs for walks, but my dogs won't wear shoes. Heck, we don't even leave them in the backyard for more than 20 min. at a time in the heat.

I'll need to try the steak thing, I guess.

By the way, folks who've lived in TX awhile..why no sidewalks?? Only yard and street..I don't get it.

Little dogs with short coats, and some breeds like greyhounds, really need protection from freezing cold in the winter. A doggy sweater or jacket, whatever is easier and more available.

I draw the line, however, at doggy negligee's.

It's times like this that I remember why I don't have a dog. They're just too high-maintenance. I don't even have the attention span to keep a houseplant alive. God forbid I ever have kids...

I have a couple of theories... but nothing *concrete*
1. Texas properties are just too damn big to try to pave all those long ribbons of sidewalk.
2. Only losers walk in Texas... a car (or two) for every man, women and child over age 15 years.

I have a 20x10 little field of those little goat head vines in my front yard. The thorns spread like crazy.

If I walk barefoot on the sidewalk here after the sun goes down I can barely get to my mailbox and back before I'm literally in pain.

Not strange.
