The kids were asking for it. If they claim ignorance of it causing a problem they need to get their dicks out of theirs ears. Writing shiat on yourself is distracting enough, make it to a haircut and it becomes seriously distracting.

Freedom of expression might include this, but it comes with freedom of consequences especially if there is a dress code.

Yeah, like the emo shiats get sent home for wearing nav stars all over their bodies.

Come on, if you can't get suspended for the ridiculous scenewhore fried bouffant look, you shouldn't get suspended for this either.

"One thing you have to realize, in the black community, it's a cultural thing," Bowens says. "If they see the rap groups with the stars and stuff in their hair... what are they going to do?"

Go to the library and study hard so they can go on to college with educational scholarships and become positive role models for all black youth?

/Aiming to high?

FTA: "One thing you have to realize, in the black community, it's a cultural thing," Bowens says. "If they see the rap groups with the stars and stuff in their hair... what are they going to do?"

This is a racist statement. By a racist man who happens to be black. Teach your children to ignore the rappers, sir. It's your job as a father to lead them in the right direction, not to shrug as they choose the wrong one.

I eat those kids for breakfast.

Anyway, I think freedom of expression should be a RIGHT.

They shouldn't have gotten suspended based on their appearance. If that ever happened to me I'd raise hell, too.

I've never heard of a white kid getting expelled for having a blue flag hangin' out the left side (yeah, that's the crip side), which is a gang thing, but this kid gets shiat for it? Really?

Oh, and "five or six point stars?" What other kinds of stars are there that actually count? Next thing you know a dot or the letter "A" will be considered gang symbols.

Dress codes in public schools have been around for ages. Claiming that you didn't know such things existed is simply playing stupid.

Sure, many school dress codes have been watered down by ALCU lawyers, but the ones regarding gang paraphernalia are still in full force.

My old middle school had a fairly liberal dress policy. You could get away with a lot. That said, they would suspend you in a heartbeat if you came to school wearing anything with an L.A. Raiders logo or British Knights logo on it.

Back to these kids... if these kids really need an environment for self-expression, perhaps their mother should look into home schooling.

After all, any mother who would let her sons get a haircut like this is sure to produce two wonderful janitors for the economy of the future. After all, we may have self cleaning windows, but somebody still needs to mop the floors.

just because shools have a dress code does not mean every school athority should be allowed to add any old thing to the list, or enforce it in a way that lets administrators practice racial discrimination or personal bias.

When you start adding "any Red or Blue clothing" to the list, you're just giving every teacher on up a license to kick any kid they dislike out of school

Personally I think they should focus on making the sluts cover up so the boys can focus on their math books, and beyond that either go All-Uniform, or let the kids wear what they want

Is it not a central purpose of high school to prepare students for the job market?

Are there any employers out there paying a "living wage" willing to hire someone with insignias of any kind shaved onto their heads?

Maybe in Corporate America(TM), but traditionally, no.

Ow My Balls: Is it not a central purpose of high school to prepare students for the job market?

No, it is the prime purpose of high school to produce educated, socialized citizens. Hair really doesn't affect that.

An ample educated job pool to pull applicants from is a very nice, necessary secondary effect.

If high school's primary purpose is to make good workers, I want to know why the hell I had to sit there and puzzle through Plato's Cave when I was 14.

2007-08-23 04:41:06 AM
Properly socialized. Not gang socialized.

And if this school system wanted to be effective, it would prepare kids for the working world. It would give kids a taste of different types of work, and let them choose the program they want to go into. But once again, we suck.

I consider myself to be fairly open-minded, and yet I respectfully disagree. Instead of "making good workers" for the man, I see it from the kids' points of view. We should be helping them be ready for a world of reality that's essentially right around the corner, and unless they're going to own their own business, they won't be able to shave insignias on their heads and have a decent job.

Plus, the smug look on the one boy's face summons my "get off the lawn" feeling. It's okay to be smug when you're right. He thinks his mode of expression is appropriate in that setting when it most certainly is not.

I also think it's equally important to produce educated, socialized citizens. Allowing them to attend their education with shaved insignias counterdicts those goals.

I do not agree with the suspension, however. Maybe ISS? Keep their noses in books.

My god, when I think of some of the haircuts and clothing I had as a teenager I still cringe.

I think they should be allowed back into the school, so when the gizzity gangsta pops a cap in their head and daddy comes crying to the school board about violent gangs running amok, they can tell him to shut the fark up and listen next time.

2007-08-23 05:16:25 AM
Oh well, at least they'll grow back in a couple of days.
