This guy has been training special forces soldiers how to stay in shape. Yeah, I guess he's got what it take to knock some college-age heads around on the football field.

2007-08-22 03:34:46 PM
After that, he should declare for the draft.

There are no lawns anywhere near Sul Ross. Just rocks and dirt. Beautiful part of Texas though.

I was told by the NCAA that you have five years from your first enrollment to use your four years of eligibility (with a one year medical redshirt possible). If he enrolled in school and played almost forty years ago, how is he eligible now even if he only used three years of his eligibility?

I call movie rights!

?isn't that how it works?

2007-08-22 03:46:00 PM
i thought somehow that there were age limitations for college ball, and I also didn't realize you could still be eligible to play as a graduate student. wonder what the story is on those 40-somethings they mentioned in there.

So Julio Franco's becoming a two-sport player, I see.

Moopy Mac: If he enrolled in school and played almost forty years ago, how is he eligible now even if he only used three years of his eligibility?

I do not know the answer, but it could be because this is Division III, or there could be some sort of grandfather clause (no pun intended) that allows someone who went to school so long ago to still suit-up.

2007-08-22 03:49:30 PM
The NCAA's three divisions have different sets of rules, including those that govern eligibility. In Division III, your five-year eligibility clock only runs during semesters in which you are enrolled at an institution of higher learning.

All that, and they never said what position he plays.

He may just be a kicker.

I thought regardless of whether you had played or not before, you had no eligibility left after a certain age? I guess I was wrong.

As others have already posted, D1 schools play by different rules than their DII and DIII counterparts. There are quite a few stories of non-traditional students stepping onto the field at DII and DIII colleges but nothing like this.

That being said, I'd love to go see this guy play.

Yeah, those pesky D-III schools and their smaller enrollment and less scholarships. Why do we even let them exist. Us D-I'ers are so much better than them at football, which is what college is about anyway, right? (Well to some, obviously)

I couldn't find a picture of this guy, or more info on the Powerbase training program. Did anyone else?

"A longtime strength and conditioning coach at Nebraska, Oregon and Texas A&M, Flynt has spent the last several years selling the Powerbase training system he invented. He recently taught it to some of the military's special operations forces, keeping up with them in their workouts."

I guess this is a not so subtle troll for his training system. I guess the joke's on me for thinking I was going to be reading a feel good story about an old dude trying to recapture lost youth.

Article: A devout Christian, Flynt sees many religious undertones to his story. He also believes it touts the benefits of strength training.
