Seems unlikely to me... That's like 3-5 generations from now. Even if every kid born of one parent with a non-redhead gene ended up without it, that still doesn't make for extinction in 3-5 generations.

Plus we haven't seen anyone come from the future to steal our redheads, which seems like the most likely outcome from having no more redheads.

10 lbs of swingin' meat: Actually, since red hair is a partial trait in brunettes, then it is more closely related to a co-dominant gene.

The biggest complication is, IIRC (I don't do human genetics much) is that hair and eye colour are controlled by more than one gene locus. So not only is it a recessive/dominant or co-dominant issue it is just that it is a complex trait under multi-gene control. Plus you have the co-dominance and dominance/recessive stuff going on at those loci.

I checked the Snopes "Blonds are going extinct" (new window) article for some pointers.

The big points from Snopes is the use of the WHO as a credible sounding source.

This article cites a National Geographic source, claiming its in the current issue. But no such thing is mentioned on the NG site.

Did some checking, MC1R on Chromosome 16 seems to be the main player and appears to be under incomplete dominance as opposed to pure dominant/recessive. Although there are one or two other genes that also likely play a role but probably mostly to do with shade of red.
