I wonder, has it ever occurred to anyone that if something is such a big threat worthy of immediate suspension, you wouldn't have to reach back 8.3 years to find an example?

I wonder.. if someone draws a heart on a note, is that sexual harassment?

"B.G. + T.W. 4ever" has GOT to be an expulsion.

More discipline only works when it's the RIGHT discipline.

The place looks like a lifeless dump to me. Maybe during the three days of suspension the kid could actually learn something. Even the name is funny... Payne Junior High School.

There is only one kind of discipline and that's self-discipline, anything else has to be filed under 'Punshiment.'

They should sue. If enough victims of these silly overreactions sued the respective school districts, the hemorrhage of cash that the lawsuits cause would eventually force a reconsideration of such draconian policies.

Yes, the "we need to increase your taxes to pay for legal defense after making stupid decisions" line will go over very well. It may happen in a few communities, but if this became a trend you can bet that the majority of districts would be intelligent enough to avoid the morass.

Aleph Nought: Sooo... If he bit a gun shape out of his sandwich would that be the death penalty?

My son and his friends used to make guns out of Lego blocks in kindergarden. When they got in trouble for that, they started biting their bread in to guns.

We had all kinds of stupid problems with the schools. My son got grief for wearing white socks with a dark pair of pants. He and his friends were not meeting some standard of social conformity, so they were forced to play volleyball at recess when they just wanted to play in the playground.

I got talked to twice because my daughter's hair was messy and she would, therefore, not have any friends. Her hair was, of course, brushed when she went to school. It was just a bit wavy and got messy pretty fast, and at 5 or 6 years old, she didn't care much about brushing here hair.

I eventually gave up and home schooled my kids.

Also, let's just say that after my experience in public schools, if/when I have kids I wouldn't hesitate to sue the district. Some people, such as the bitter pubic school administrator type, are so stupid or obstinate that they only respond to force -- in this case, the authority of the courts.

c) Pay my attorney's fees and change your stupid policy

jshine: Yes, the "we need to increase your taxes to pay for legal defense after making stupid decisions"

That's just my mistrust of government spending coming out. I do however, think they would probably try to get more funding, either by local tax increases marketed under the "Think of the children!" banner, or simply skim it off the state budget so a local state rep could claim he's so pro-education in the next election.

So yeah, I'm jaded. Not that it'd stop me from suing the pants off a school if this sort of thing happened. So we sorta agree.

Back when I was a kid, I'd draw massive wars with stick figures.
... and when they started requiring red pens as school supplies, hoo boy.

I was also influenced by Doom, and one of my writing projects in school (I'm thinking fourth grade) was titled "BFG Boy" and took many red crayons to illustrate.

So what did I get suspended for in Middle School? Shortly after Columbine I remarked to my friends that if I saw anyone on the roof of the high school (which was across the football field), I'm getting my ass inside before I get sniped.

For all the liberals asking, "How is this our fault?" remember, it wasn't the right who suddenly decided all guns are evil and give off invisible psychosis rays such that anyone who touches them immediately wants to go on a killing spree. It isn't the right who is so scared of guns that they want to take them all out of the hands of their law-abiding neighbors.

It IS the right who still understands that there are few inventions in human history that have caused more good for more people than the firearm. Firearms in the hands of the common people are what ended feudalism and brought about democracy and liberty -- without them, the rich had a complete monopoly on the means of violence. As Patrick Henry said, one of the foremost goals of a free state should be to see that ALL its citizens are armed, because that is and has always been the root of all freedom.

Everyone but the left it seems still knows that and still believes it. So, who else do you blame when you see people so freaked out about guns that even a drawing of one sends people into a panic and is seen as "threatening"?

\Drew all sorts of interesting things in high school

I always drew pictures of me shooting kids that were on my lawn.

Really, though, the one that got me suspended was in 8th grade science class: we had a sub, we'll just call him Mr. Reed. Mr. Reed was a fairly high-strung, red in the face, take no shiat from the students kind of dude. The guy who sat next to me was one of those guys who could draw just about anything - even his handwriting looked arty and cool. So we're trading insults while we're supposed to be working on our dittos, yeah, that's right, dittos. He wrote something to the effect of "You Suck Lollipops" on my sprial-bound to which I responded by taking a big, green, permanent marker and writing "DIE" really big on his ditto.

The dude went up to get a new ditto to replace the one I had ruined and LEFT THE OLD ONE ON THE TEACHER'S DESK.

So, we're a few minutes back into our dittos and all of a sudden we get grabbed by the back of our collars and practically carried outside where Mr. Reed, three shades of purple swore at us, pushed us into the wall, and basically accused us of threatening his life.

We got to do the carpet dance in front of the VP, who rolled her eyes and said she had no choice but to suspend us, even though she believed we weren't doing anything wrong other than goofing off. On the bright side, I got a day off out of it.

/This was in '91.
//I think I used to design rudimentary nuclear weapons in class, not to mention drawing thousands of airplanes, guns, tanks, starships, and all-out war scenes.

Charlie Freak: I have a similar story...

When I was in fourth grade (maybe?) I made a whole bunch of homemade bookmarks (sad, I know). One read:

TOO MUCH HURTS YOUR BUTT

by which I meant that if you sit on your ass reading for long stretches of time, your ass is eventually going to hurt. But the bus driver, who discovered it after it fell out of one of my books, believed I was making some sort of crazy homophobic/pro-gay sex/advocating anal rape statement and screamed at me about my godless upbringing in front of a bus load of children, many of whom were much younger than me. I had no idea what she was talking about, but it scared the living crap out of me, especially when she threatened to call the school and the cops on my parents, who were obviously either abusing or sexually molesting me.

The next morning, my mother, God bless her, laid holy hell down on that woman. And from that point on, I was driven to school.

I imagine if that same thing were to happen today, I'd be in foster care so fast my head would spin.

Randy Cassingham, who writes the This is TRUE newsletter, has an anti-zero-tolerance crusade going.

The important thing is that we all stand up to this stuff. If you're in the affected district, GO TO THE NEXT SCHOOL BOARD MEETING and make sure all your friends do, too. Even if you don't have any kids in school, even if you don't take the mic, just making sure the chamber is packed will send a powerful message.

man, I would have been SO farked. That's pretty much all I did back in high school, draw diagrams of fictional technology then try to figure out how to make them work in real life. (What was I supposed to do? Listen to some dropout read from a book and try to explain things I already know to myself, two other intelligent individuals, and a group of mouth-breathers?). Some kids need a mental challenge.

Cato: liberals blah blah blah

Right. Because the "conservatives" of this day and age have never supported one ideology which conflicts with another which they happen to claim to support.

Newsflash to morons who want to politicize this: This is not a left-vs.-right issue inasmuch as the liberals and conservatives of today are concerned . It is a moron vs. sensible person issue and both sides of the political spectrum have both of those sorts in abundance.

YouFarkingIdiot At the same time that we are trying to design artificial intelligence to mimic the human brain, we are dumbing down humans so that they have very basic input/output rules to follow (just like computers).

Wow, that does pretty much sum up the situation, doesn't it. We have largely failed in our quest to make our machines more like us, so we compensate by making our children more like machines.

upthedownstair: When I was in elementary school in the 70's, I probably did my share of drawing/sketching guns. This was the time when Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and The Black Hole were the sci-fi films/shows that were around.

That's what I drew. Star Wars or Battlestar Galactica characters threatening each other with weapons and making snarky remarks. Mostly people thought I was weird. I didn't get the memo that chicks were supposed to draw homo-erotic scenes or write slash fanfic.

Judging by this, in this day and age I'd probably be expelled.

Probably. I did get some disapproving comments about violence recently when I "re-imagined" Ron Moore & David Eick's R&D production company cartoon with the original Battlestar Galactica characters invading and killing them off.
