It may be a liberal world but this didn't happen in a liberal county (new window).

Tyee: Who can defend suspensions for this? It's what boys do!

I brought a 12 gauge shot gun and shells to school and put it in my locker when I was in 9th grade. Walked right by the office never thought anything of it. I had a hunters safety coarse in the afternoon after school. It never was an issue.

Okay, I think we have found the line, and this is over it. I think I would have a problem with 14 year olds with shotguns in school.

jeebus, I built execution devices, similar to the guillotine, for Lego spacemen... (those pencil trolls were a formidable, nasty foe. but in the end revenge was mankind's, as the lego laser guns fit perfectly up the trolls' asses).

What? Like YOU didn't!

I thought it was rough when I got grounded for a drawing of the middle finger in my notebook. This is absolutely re-donkulous. I fear for the future if/when I ever have children.

I have not snappy comments. This is just so sad the extent our government goes to, to protect us from ourselves.

The school should burn all books that have gun pictures on them as well --- just to be sure.

When I was in high-school, I got pulled into the office at one point for *talking* about the *potential* purchase of a sword. I basically informed them that probably half of the student body was well acquainted with high-powered rifles (this being Wisconsin, the deer-hunting state), and further reminded them that I was one of their good students, and that there were much more deserving targets of their harassment if they really felt that badly that they needed to "do something" to make themselves look pro-active about a non-existent violence problem. I then asked if I could go. Neither the vice-principal, nor the other teacher there, said a word, so I just got up and left.

Yeah, I was a cheeky bastard. Still am.

I think one of the saddest parts of this is the Columbine reference made by the school to the parents. Guns weren't the issue at Columbine. An unhealthy school culture and a broken town culture were the issues.

Yeah, but seems to me that guns were a bit of a problem when the 2 kids started KILLING people with them.

This is just more male neutering. To call this ridiculous would be an understatement... I use to draw stick figure battles filled with tanks, planes, bombs and gore....and I ain't never killed nobody my government didn't tell me to.

Now please stand against the wall and await your RFID implant....should only take a second. If you act up or are anything but an ideal US citizen we well just deactivate your RFID account and you won't be able to travel....get money from your bank...or even pay for food....HAVE A NICE DAY.

What you don't want a chip??? In the near future you will demand it....keeps us safe after all.

Ummm....what were we talk'n bout?

Use to draw my teachers naked... some flattering, some not.

My Senior Art project was a comic involving the ''Doomsday Stalker'' sneaking in the school and killing my art teacher and dragging her body to the furnace... I got an A. Never mind the fact that we'd skip school to go deer hunting and show up at lunch with the carcass in the bed, rifles in the gunrack, dried blood on our hands and clothes... Some teachers would even come out and admire the kill. If that happened today, SWAT would have gunned us down. Sad really.

All these little candy-assed bullshiat sensitivities designed to shield our innocent youth are a waste... you can't control the exposure to shape how one feels about the exposed subject, it's ruining childhood as we know it. You don't want them drawing guns? Tough shiat, kids like guns. They play with war toys, they play with war games, they learn the "Pew..pew..pew" around 2-3 years old... it's a part of growing up.

amerikenadian:

Probably, question is can a 13 year old conceivably get ahold of a laser in any fashion powerful enough to hurt anyone?

The answer is of course yes but the likely hood is extremely slim and the damage at most someones eye. More likely to do the same damage with a spitball or a pencil.

This shiat is worse than my first year at college. The RD made me take down a poster I had made up for my quasi-brewery (in profile) and made me take down a Guinness wall clock because "they promoted drinking". Yes because my feeble teenage mind made me drink because the clock on the wall said it was a good idea.

Wow, I was a model student in middle and high school. But I doodle a lot when I was bored, and a lot of it included guns and bombs and other crap like that. Never once was it a threat against anyone or anything. It was just mindless doodling.

Oh, and you know what's ironic? At the same time that we are trying to design artificial intelligence to mimic the human brain, we are dumbing down humans so that they have very basic input/output rules to follow (just like computers).

At the same time, if we didn't have such a f'ed up legal system, I don't think you'd see as many stupid decisions as this one. The teachers and administrators are just trying to prevent someone for suing them after little Johnny goes postal, because they did not report or suspend little Johnny for drawing guns. Nevermind that Johnny is only one of 1000 kids at that school drawing guns and that the other 999 are perfectly normal.

The collapse of the US as we know it is near...

CARL_WEATHERS: True story (if a little off subject). Used to work in a cinema with the scariest projectionist ever. Full on zip-up slipper, drooling, greasy date-rapist type. One morning before the release of the Star Wars prequel, I had to track him down for a meeting regarding performace times.....ascending into the dark corridors of the projection booth I went looking for him....not immediately finding him, I had a quick peek in the 'Projection booth'- to discover a sketch book of his containing rather acurate drawings of almost every member of staff in the place........each of them a spot on caricature...except every one of us had the bottom and legs of a goat.

He also had a gun.

I think we fired him...........

Wolfinstl: It's a liberal world. Almost (not) makes me want to become a Republican.

Why in the world would you try to make this a "liberal vs. conservative" thing? If there's anything that threads like this demonstrate, it's that zero-tolerance policies like this are equally ridiculed by the left and the right. Helicopter parents are too busy hovering over their precious little snowflakes to be interested in politics.

As someone who did nothing but doodle through high school and college, here's an actual item I wrote at Cox High School in Virginia Beach back in 1983:

"Every year, hundreds of thousands of students enter the geometry zone ...
"No one knows the reason. Maybe they want to go to college ... maybe want to kill their grade point average ... maybe they consider this some sort of demented, crude fun ... or maybe some students took it for the extra sleep.
"It starts off simple enough; proofs, then a few problems ... but then comes the postulates, theroms, polygons, constructions, points, given statements, angles ... tests, quizes, mass doses of homework. ... the terror goes on and on.
"Please help us stop this terror. Parents: If your teenager says, "Mommy, Daddy, I want to take geometery, lock this student in his/her room until he/she comes to his/her senses. The demands all geometry to be shot on sight ... Please, get your gun and go into the math dept. of your local high school and have a field day ...
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!!!
Thank you,
Sponsored by the Society for the Nullification of Geometry (SNOG)."

I shutter to think how many years I'd be sitting in prison for writing something like that today.

CycloneArmageddon: An unhealthy school culture and a broken town culture were the issues.

Homes, you been watching too much Bowling for Columbine. Littleton is no worse or better than 99% of the towns in America. That whole bit in the movie insinuating that because Lockheed has a facility there, the people are somehow more prone to having violent kids was total bullshiat.

I bought it too, before I moved to Colorado. Have some good friends who live over that way. Columbine could have happened ANYWHERE, not just Littleton. Was VT caused by a 'broken town culture'? Broken Country culture, I'll give you...

Ben Mosteller said that when he came to the school to discuss his son's punishment, school officials mentioned the seriousness of the issue and talked about the massacre at Colorado's Columbine High School - the site where two teenagers shot and killed 12 students and injured 24 others with drawings of laser guns in 1999.

robhead: So, when I was in school, the JROTC used to have fake wooden guns to drill with. I assume this is a thing of the past?

Hah. Go back to teh early sixties. In NYC...yes, NYC... there were high school gun clubs to which the kids would bring their rifles.

goofass: I'm wondering why the Mostellers haven't sued the shiat out of the school district.

One simple reason:

ZERO TOLERANCE and you have to type ZERO TOLERANCE like that. ZERO TOLERANCE is the same retarded policy that got a 7 year old expelled for having a medallion in the shape of a handgun on a necklace from a gum ball machine, and I believe another expelled for a GI Joe gun in his backpack.

So they suspend a kid for drawing a pretend gun.
Cops are invited into schools all the time where they show off their real guns.
We live in a society that's full of guns and where regulation of any kind is impossible and manufacturers of guns are immune from any responsibility.

If the drawing was a threat, who was he threatening?

Drawings don't kill people, pissed off artists who stab you with pencils kill people.

OK, pansy. kidding.

It was never anything to be concerned about, it was just a tool in our eyes, by "our" I mean myself and the school administrators.
The same thing as bringing a special type of hammer to shop class.

That having been said I agree that today things are different and I wouldn't be comfortable doing this today. I would recommend that you check your gun in the office and pick it up after school.
The kids who check their gun aren't the problem.

as a kid who drew huge battles, millions of nukes, etcoontil columbine happened, i can say, yeah it's all BS, we used to draw TONS of stuff everyday because we were bored, then columbine happened and we got a stern warning for a half-assed drawing we did

of course, the next year we went around destroying school property

maybe they should've let us drawn instead?

that said if it had been now we would've been permanently expelled/put on ritallin/etc.

In High School some friends and I came up with a comic called "The Bertinator". Bert goes postal after not getting a Postal job. Great stuff, but would probably get someone expelled now. I have a copy somewhere.
Firing bottle rockets down the halls from science class at the grade 9 students is probably frowned upon now as well.
My Militia Basic training T-shirt (Canada) said Kill'em all and let God sort'em out.
What about the students who want to play RPG's like Traveller and D&D? We had a school club organized.
