Maybe I'll fill up those 5-gallon water jugs I have. I could use them in case of emergency anyway.

Wow. That article sounds more like an advertisement for the fighter planes than it does a news story about THE FREAKIN RUSSIANS FLYING A BOMBER OVER NA AIRSPACE.

Merlindo: Also this seems to be the recon variant of this aircraft...no bombs

The Bear D is the recon version. The Bear H is a cruise missile launch platform.

dscott72: Does make you wonder what the fark Russia is up to lately. It is almost like they want the cold war to start up again.

Yeah, it would make them feel important again. The US, of all countries, actually took russia seriously for a time.

Now they've got the numerical GDP of Italy with 6 times the population. They're pathetic, they don't want to acknowledge it, so they react by playing silly little games like this.

Do you blame us The Typhoon is like the Spitfire of the modern RAF, you get goosebumps when the twin enginges go on full burn and the plane skyrockets into the wild blue yonder, just in the same way the drone of the Merlin engine makes you fill up with pride and tears.

ef is good man, still rather have a raptor

IdBeCrazyIf: VideSupra: You can't get all the nukes before they are launched in retaliation (hell, with todays technology, our nukes would be in the air before theirs would land)

Isn't mutually assured destruction grand?

Besides, any war is usually fought over assets and resources. And what good are radiated resources.

The game theory behind it is truly fascinating.

My advisor for my International Relations major is Scott Sagan, the world leading expert of nuclear policy/weapons. Man have I gotten an earful over this stuff.

During the Korean War, the US wanted to capture a MIG and have a good look at it. So the dropped leaflets over a dozen NK air bases with this proposition: "Land your MIG at an American Airbase, and you get $100,000 and US citizenship." (plus instructions on low speed approach, gear down, flaps out...)

Interestingly, the plane that defected was sent to the airbase in my town, at Wright-Patterson. After covering up all the markings, they did flight tests over the city of Dayton.

Theres a story that some F-86s were doing training missions around the base, and noticed the odd aircraft. Apparently ground control had to tell them it was a secret test aircraft so that noone knew the MiG was really there.

/still sees some CRAZY looking planes flying around the base

What you have to remember is Russian men have the tiniest genitals in the world. That is why they act like bullies. Ask any scholar on Russian diplomatic relations and they will tell you the same.

Well, at least we're getting some use out of those farking Typhoons we paid so much for anyway. Actually they were designed to dogfight with Mig-29s then the USSR broke up. Dashed bad form. but now the red menace has very sportingly returned. Yay!

It is the first time the £60m Eurofighter...

The £67m fighter jets were officially put on active standbY...

How much did the fighter jets cost again? Can we get a third number?

Author needs to nail down the price of the RAF Typhoons. First they're 60m pounds, then go up to 67m in the next graph.

It's not just either of you. My dad flew F-4's and F-15E's. I was amazed at the pics from this "article" if nothing else. I have a pic on my wall that my dad took in the 70s. It's the exact same look, save replacing the Typhoon with an F-4.

I have a photo taken in 1979 in Alaska of the same kind of Russian bomber being escorted by 2 F-4's. The F-4's were older than me.

These bombers could be knocked down with a rock!

Meh! nuttin to show off there chaps. The Raptor is a far superior fighter than the Typhoon. Typhoon is at best a very slightly better variant of the F-16's. Bascially still 70's era technology with a couple of modern gizmos added on.

Twin engines may win but I gotta say when you work on a single engine fighter the pilots sure treat you better!

Ask your Dad, I'm sure he would agree.

I agree with ya on the SM Spit comment, though I'll take the rugged H. Hurricane they kept in service way too long. what other plan would get you home missing half your tail and 50% of the fabric over your fuselage? (sans A-10)

For some reason, all I can see in my head is a some blitzed, Russian pilot going, "Hey, comrade. Hold my vodka and watch this. This always pisses them off."

albo: no brainer for putin. you use a little gas and a 50-year-old tu-95, and you get the west peeing their pants

It's more or less identical to the B-52 in speed and range. Ofcourse the B-52 is a laughing stock too, right?

Yea, let's hope they don't get nostalgic for other parts of the good old days, such as supplying arms and training to groups we are at war with.

Perhaps Dubya could look into Putin's eyes again and tell us what he's up to.

remeber the B-52 is a 50 year old relic.

The Bear is not that bad of a bomber, even though the Backfire has taken over strategic bombing missions.
