How about we just continue to enjoy a civilized discourse about religious tolerance?

Not From the CIA: There is nothing lower on the order of beliefs and religions than "Wiccans."

Get a life, you poseurs.

Troll.

Wicca is either very old or very new and it doesn't matter which.
Yes, there are a lot of Wiccan Poseurs, but the same is true for Christians, Jews, Muslims and (gasp) even Atheists too. Every group has its Poseurs; every group has its members who twist the teachings to reflect their own prejudices.

Every wiccan I have known has been a grade A nutjob. That said, most christians that I know are also grade A nutjobs. I don't see much difference between someone who believes in in imaginary person in the earth with one who believes in an imaginary person in the sky. Both are idiots in my opinion, but at least I can touch and feel the earth.

When you consider batshiat crazy people in general, I'd rather it was a Pagan/Wiccan...

Batshiat crazy Pagan/Wiccan: incoherent chanting around a toxic backyard fire while dancing half dressed drunk after midnight; also known to wear hideous bathrobes and cast spells to protect Nessie.

Batshiat crazy Christian: tends to go about yelling that everyone will burn forever in hell, known to firebomb/shoot womens clinics, protest funerals, kill their own children thought to be possessed by the devil.

Batshiat crazy Muslims: will blow up anything/everything... including themselves.

All in all, I'd rather deal with the crazy Wiccan lady.

You haven't known the right Wiccans. Most of us are pretty normal people, albeit with odd senses of humor. I agree that most PEOPLE are grade A nutjobs, Wiccans have the same percentages as everyone else.

Is that supposed to mean something to me? And it's not intolerance. If it was intolerance, I would have said ALL christians and wiccans are grade A nutjobs. I didn't. I said all the wiccans and most of the christians THAT I HAVE MET are. There may very well be normal wiccans out there. I just haven't met them yet. And as I said, I have met a few christians that are normal people who don't try to shove religion down your throat. That also said, I've never had a wiccan try to force their religion on me. I HAVE had christians do that.

The rules for Wicca are pretty simple: so long as you harm nobody, do what you choose. There isn't too much infighting (at least, not in any organized sense -- just intra-personal politics and human nature), and there is a preference for tolerance kinda built into the belief system. And the reverence for the earth, the emphasis on personal responsibility, all that stuff is a pretty good draw, too, for a certain type of person.

Plus, what did it matter if she WAS drunk. She was in her own backyard, so she wasn't in public. Disturbing the peace I can see, and MAYBE the careless use of a fire, but even if she was drunk, it's not illegal to be drunk in her own backyard.

Educate yourself on swastikas (new window)

Also, to add to the list of innocent swastikas that were quickly taken out of use with the outbreak of WWII, The Boy Scouts have an award know as "Order of the Arrow". Prior to WWII, it was the "Order of the White Swastika", a nod to the Native American use of the symbol.

Doctor Funkenstein: If churches can ring those stupid bells and play lame music over loudspeakers at will then I say Witchy McCrackpot should get to prance around chanting nonsense, too.

ajt167: i've never heard the lame music over loudspeakers before, but if the music and bells were waking up all the neighbors really early in the morning (most likely around 4 am), while the pastor was dancing around in his underwear in full public view and burning things that are illegal to burn and harmful to the environment . . . kind of see what i'm getting at here?

I might not be Christian anymore and I certainly don't attend the nearby church, but I rather like the sound of the big church bells ringing in the afternoon and on Sunday. Reminds me of the last scene in Batman.

Hey. I'm just trying to make my way in this world. I call them as I see them.

I am not preaching here. That's the last thing I want to do. To say that I am is insulting and demeaning. We don't do that. Play nice. Did you get one of those "Does not play well with others" on your report card from kindergarten?

I'm trying to make a point. Pagans are people too. And we're not all nuts. We have got our share though. I could tell stories of Pagan idiocy and insanity from now until the universe dies its heat death. But the same is true of everyone's beliefs. There are idiots everywhere.

My wife and I have been practicing (actually, I think we've got it right by now) pagans for 25 years. We have essentially withdrawn from the community at large because, as became apparent with every group of people that get together and claim a common faith, it brings out what we have come to call the GRANOLA. You know FRIUTS, NUTS, AND FLAKES. No religion, faith, path to god head, whatever you call what you do is immune from this effect.

It's always amusing whenever a rational discussion about religion is hijacked by condescending idiots who call everyone who has a religion attention whores.

I know you religion-bashing types think you're so much more intellectual and "grounded" by not having a religion, but in reality all your contempt serves is to correctly paint you with the same broad brush you do everyone else.

I don't know...why not? The name came to me one day. Why Raven Darke? You may as well ask: Why Mark Twain? George Elliot? Lewis Carroll?

BTW, I used to know a "Robin" in the community. No "Bluebirds" though.

The raven (Corvus Corax) is the smartest of all birds (according to Bernd Heinrich, researcher at UVT). They are adept at puzzle solving and sound imitation. They have learned to open Velcro(tm) and zippers. They team up to steal food from other species (esp. eagles, one pulls the eagles tail and the other steals the kill) and to protect their young.

Raven is a trickster figure in many mythologies (like Coyote and Anansi, he tries to find a clever solution to save effort and ends up doing much more work than if he had just done the obvious).

I hope that answers the question, or at least leaves you with more questions.

I don't think that is why everyone chooses Raven. I think it is because it is a black bird and they think it sounds cool. I would say that Raven Darke is a pretty typical sounding name for a witchy gothy chick.

I was a proto goth back in the 80s. You could say I wore black on the outside because black is how I felt on the inside. My sister in law is a demonolatrist. Believe me, I have seen lots of examples of boring witchy gothy stuff. To me, it is just a bunch of outcast types taking the form of what they think a cool subset for them. Raven, Storm, etc is just another example of a boring cliche.

To you, it is non conformist and very real. To the outsider it is just like any other game.

There really is no such thing as a true non conformist. You fit into a perfect subset of your generation as do I. I just fit into another obnoxious stereotype.

I guess for now that's all I have to say for now.

1. I am no Goth and I am not a Chick. (I am male. I dress in bright Hawaiian shirts and shorts. I love blue skies and sunny days.)
2. I am not a conformist, nor am I a nonconformist. I am myself. If you don't like it it's not my problem. If you do like it It's still not my problem.
3. What generation do you think I am? The answer may surprise you (I am 35).
4. I have an internally consistant viewpoint on the world. That's more than I can say for many people.
5. I've been Pagan for 12 years and for me, its just something I do. I know a lot of people get off on Witch-bashing and I just wanted to bring some sanity to the discussion.
6. Raven Darke is not my craft name, nor has it ever been. It's just something that came to me as I was signing up for Fark.
7. Believe me or not, its up to you. I don't give a fark either way.

Personal Responsibility. You have a choice in how you act and not being just "another obnoxious stereotype".

If you choose to accept the stereotype, it's not my problem. I sympathize; it's much easier to be what everyone else says than to be yourself. I don't give a fark if your an iconoclast or an idolator. Be yourself.

Although, the game of croquet was fun.
