1. Ohio State will win the Big Ten.
2. IU and Northwestern will suck.
2. Purdue will go undefeated through their non-conference schedule and suck when they actually have to play good teams.

While I'd love to opine that OSU will win the Big Ten, I don't see it. I see a big fat 9-3 season on the horizon, with Wisconsin taking it all.

The rest of the general population thinks NU will win in the neighborhood of 70-10.

As long as we can all agree that Notre Dame will only win four games this year.....

Sadly, the BCS will likely have some 11th hour rule change allowing non-conference schools with monopolistic television contracts an automatic at-large bid in a BCS bowl. Thus ensuring another undeserved appearance for ND in a bowl game. The only silver lining will be that ND will get crushed in this game by a team that actually earned their spot.

The Gators this year could be the OSU Buckeyes of last season.
No seriously hear me out

Parallels:

QBs who are known for their running ability but in the preseason everyone wonders can he throw the ball (Smith and Tebow)

A Defense that lost most of its players to the NFL Including highly talented young linebackers (Laurenitis and Spikes)

2 WRs on offense, both of which are fast but one of which is on another level with speed and the other seeming to be more clutch [(Ginn and Gonzo) and (Harvin and Caldwell)]

A great coach known that people fear playing (Tressel and Meyer)

Only difference is that Florida won't have the schedule or the preseason #1

USC will be playing Florida/LSU in the BCS title game. I hate USC and it always annoys me that they are held in such high regard year in and year out with the crap conference they play in. However, let me humble myself and say that USC's talent is the best in the country this year and their schedule is finally tough enough with non-conference match-ups to have them earn the #1 slot. As far as I'm concerned, its their title to lose.

West Virginia may go undefeated but will not get the nod over a 1-loss SEC team. However, I do think Steve Slaton, if he stays healthy, will win the Heisman Trophy.

The Big 10 might as well stay at home. They will have a long way to go to repair their conference's reputation after the way the Gators spanked their beloved Buckeyes. In my mind, The Big East, WAC, or Conference USA should all get title shots over any Big 10 team. I feel sorry for Michigan because they are the only program I respect out of the Big 10. In fact, even though I'm a Gator fan, last year should've had a playoff where we played Michigan to decide who got the title shot. After the way we handled OSU, I still think the outcome would've been the same but at least Michigan would've been able to sleep easy knowing that they didn't deserve to be there after the Gators stomped them too.

Was USC's non-conference schedule weak before?

No. It wasn't particularly weak before. Especially since they know they have to beef up the non-conference match-ups because they play in the Pac-10. Now the Pac 10 is no SEC but I should've added in my previous post how I've seen some significant improvements in some of the Pac 10 programs which should help them in the rankings. The only thing I notice is that they don't have any SEC opposition this year. But their road sched. looks pretty difficult- at Nebraska, at Washington, at Notre Dame, at Oregon, at Cal, and at ASU. Those all look pretty tough. Now, I know Notre Dame will probably suck but USC should hope they don't until they go play them and at Nebraska should be interesting.

There's hype about UCLA this year? Who knew? Actually I think its funny that Richard Cirminiello writes that UCLA wont have a good season but the publication he runs (College Football News) has the Bruins ranked 11th. Way to cover your bases there Richard. Dumbass.

As far as USC goes, this UCLA Alum hates them with a rage equal to the inferno of the sun; however, you cant really criticize a team for a weak schedule that in the past 5 years has voluntarily played Auburn, Nebraska, Arkansas, BYU, Virginia Tech, and then no. 6 Kansas State. The day that USC fills its non-conference scedule with teams like Troy, Florida Atlantic, and Western Kentucky you can say are a bunch of cowards. But, of course, no "big name" program would be that big a bunch of pussies, right?

The Pac-10 is the 2nd best conference in college football, after the SEC. It's really annoying to have to listen to this crap about the Big 10 year in and year out. All last year all anybody could say was how Ohio St. and Michigan were CLEARLY the two best teams, and that it wasn't fair that they couldn't meet in the National Championship game. Well, in their bowl games, Michigan got crushed by USC (again), and Ohio St. got crushed by Florida. This happens pretty much every year, but it gets overshadowed by the fact that Notre Dame is always such an overrated failure.

Both USC and Cal would throttle Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio St. UCLA would beat them, too. USC would beat Florida and LSU, as well, and I wouldn't be surprised if Cal did, either.

Suck it, Big 10.

2007-08-15 02:27:31 PM
There's hype about UCLA this year?

Yes, cause on paper we look good this year. 20 returning starters, all our tough games at home (We're @ USC, but that doesn't really count as a road game).

Problem is we still have Karl "Scapegoat my Assistants" Dorrell as coach, so who knows what will happen. But it's ok cause Karl will make repeated statements about "growing" and "learning" during the season as we stumble to another 7-6 season with an embarrassing Bowl loss.

Buchholz96: Especially since they know they have to beef up the non-conference match-ups because they play in the Pac-10.
I love knowing how weak the Pac10 is, when the teams always play USC close, and save the Fighting Vince Youngs, it's been awhile since a non-conference team beat USC. Heck, it's tough for non conference teams to even HANG with the Trojans, when they play.

I think that suggests a few possibilities: the Pac10 isn't as bad as you assume, other conferences are not as good as you assume, familiarity helps these teams play USC (and, somehow, USC can prepare for teams they haven't faced better than teams can prepare for USC... again, save the Fighting Vince Youngs), or... well, maybe college football isn't as predictable as some people believe.

2007-08-15 03:37:19 PM
Also, the reason there's no playoff in Bowl Division football is because the Pac10 would win more of them than other conferences, just like in every other sport.

Comment on the article: I called Oregon State's victory last year two months before it happened (I certainly didn't expect the UCLA victory). OSU always gave them a hard time in Corvallis, and I expected they were going to pull the shocker (not that kind)... just maybe not by nearly blowing a decent lead.

It should be USC's title to lose this season, but they need to have a running game show up once in awhile in order to win it all. Their defense should be good enough to essentially stop everyone else in their tracks. If any Trojan team in the last few years can match the 2004 team, and may be deserving of the preseason hype, this is the team.

When you play in the SEC, there's no need to beef up the sched. with "tough" non-conference games. We use them to rest :) Minus FSU of course....

I am saying that the Pac-10 is improving but you put the bottom half of the Pac 10 up against the bottom half of the SEC and you'd still have your Pac 10 teams getting slaughtered.

Lets review:

Pac 10- USC good, Cal sometimes, UCLA on a given day, Washington eh, ASU maybe, Oregon eh at best. USC is the only program that is consistently good year in and year out.

SEC- Florida, LSU, Tennessee, Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas sometimes, South Carolina has their moments. I'll give you Vanderbilt and Kentucky are pretty weak but I'd love to see Kentucky or Vandy square off against Stanford or Washington State.

Say what you want but there is no arguing that the SEC is the most consistent and most competitive conference in the land.

USC only plays SEC teams when they need to break in a new QB. That happened against Auburn in Leinart's first start and against Arkansas in Booty's first. USC beat the hell out of both of them.

The only reason you have that consistency is because those teams (minus Tennessee for the most part) schedule 3-4 gimmes AT HOME to start the season then beat up on the awful bottom half of the conference. SEC teams are gauranteed 7-8 wins a year just for suiting up.

Yippie!

Finally, a headline that isn't "Michigan Sucks!". Thank you!

Now. Michigan or Wisconsin will win the Big 10, unless one of them has a meltdown. I'd like to see Michigan go Undefeated (but after last year, I don't see them as National Champs unless they blow out their top tier opponents (Notre Dame, Penn State, Wisconsin, Ohio State. Yes, Notre Dame, because they get more recognition than they deserve, so there's more weight behind beating them), and then win their Bowl game convincingly.) but I think they're going to have trouble with Ohio State and Wisconsin, not to mention whatever bowl game they get into.

The biggest problem Michigan is going to have this year is the new kickoff rule; it means their Kickoff teams are going to have to be fantastic, since their Defense is suspect. Their defense needs to find some big playmakers, and find them quickly. The big test of how the season is going to go comes in Week 2, against Oregon. If the beat Oregon, and beat them convincingly, it bodes well for the year. If their defense suffers in that game, or looks weak, then it's going to be a long, frustrating season for Techhell.

When the SEC beats up on each other, it's proof of how deep the conference is. When the Pac-10 does the same, it's somehow proof of its mediocrity.

Arkansas' Darren McFadden will win the Heisman this year, the man is a beast. He would have won it last year but technically wasn't eligible (you have to be a junior or a senior). If he stays healthy there is no one better in my opinion that will take it.

The Pac-10 is over rated and there is no way in hell Cal would beat Mich, Wisc, or even OSU. Hell they can't even beat Tenn who is maybe a mid-level SEC team. Whoever said that is a moron west coast homer. Granted, USC will probably win it all this year against LSU or Wisc, but the rest of the conference will not fair anywhere near as well.

I hope my Hokies can do alright this year. My confidence in our team depends solely on whether Sean Glennon can actually do something on offense and not cough up the ball every other possession.

It will definitely be a good football year (as they always are) and will be a lot different than last year other than USC and ND. USC will be as good if not better than last year and ND will be just as overhyped.

We'll see how it plays out on the west coast.

furthermore, i think that, for the most part, the teams would split home-and-home series based on who was the home team (except USC, who would beat everyone in the SEC). Mississippi State is the only SEC team to visit any Northwest team since I've been alive (1983). Hell, OSU would've beaten LSU if they had a kicker who could make a damn extra point a few years ago (lost by 1, missed THREE XP)

Cal, OSU, and Oregon are better than Michigan and Wisconsin and will be better than tOSU this year. (though probably not last year). But again, I think it would be a home and home thing. Didn't Oregon sweep Michigan on a home and home a few years ago?

Did you even watch any of the games last year? Here on the east coast we get Pac-10 games all the time, just later in the day. I have lots of respect for you because you know your stuff. I was talking more about this year than years in the past. It's true that many teams don't do the home-and-home thing with the west coasties, but I wish they would. Hell I wish VT would stop playing crap teams and get out there and play Oregon or UCLA or someone. Until someone with balls in the scheduling dept steps up then all we can do is ponder.

It was explained to me in another thread that it's all about the money, the only northwest stadium even close to the stadium size of the SEC schools and whatnot is Husky Stadium. OSU's and WSU's are especially small, and the SEC team wouldn't make money. Of course, I say that if you say that you're scheduling teams based on money you're going to make, you shouldn't be allowed to complain about getting left out of bowl games based on a weak SOS. (Auburn, 2004)

Anyway, at least Tennessee's doing it and some teams do it with USC. Hopefully Wisconsin will be coming to Pullman (they're playing the Cougars this year, right? or is it next year? i'm concerned with fantasy NFL right now, i'm not in college mode yet.)

As for Cal, I'm defending them at this point because over the past few years they've been a very good team that is pretty underrated generally, IMO. But I can't say as I scout practices and all that. I'll form actual opinions I'll really argue based on the games I see.

Well, they only lost by 4 points, but the first half was total Oregon domination. They did come back to make a game of it in the 2nd half, but that was an Oregon team that only went 8-5, and lost every other game they played against ranked opponents.

Here's my coverage of the ACC for you.

Everyone will hate on the ACC, and they'll be right for the most part.

Boston College will be the only ACC team to make a good bowl game, and that's only because the ACC has the Orange Bowl.

Miami and Florida State will be compared to seasons when they were actually good once again and still get coach's poll votes because they are retarded.

Duke will suck. That's not a fark meme, that's a fact of life.

Georgia Tech would be good if they didn't play in a division with VTech and Miami.

Virginia Tech will still kick everyone's ass, though all you'll hear is how they overcame such a tragic moment. Guaren-farking-teed.

NC State will improve but not much.

North Carolina will win 2 games if Tyler Hansborough moves to left tackle.

Clemson. Clemson? Get the fark out of here.

Virginia. Virginia? Get the double fark outta here.

Maryland will move triumphantly along to a victorious 7-5 season. And will set a record for INTs.

Wake Forest will not repeat their season. Sorry. Not gonna happen.

There. The ACC will suck it hard. HARD.
