Netanyahu at least has a clue of what he's doing

Yeah the problem is "what he's doing" is trying to annex the occupied territories, or at least the juicy bits thereof.

I wonder how the next war with Lebanon will turn out.

Ok - clearly this is a moderately important topic. Definately serious. I think... I think we need hot IDF babes to help sort this situation out.

True enough. My prediction for the next Israeli war? Israel allied with Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the Sunni side of Iraq and the official Lebanon Gov't vs. Hezbollah, Hamas, the Shia side of Iraq, Syria and Iran.

The war will be going fine up until one of Israel's Allies (or all of them) decide to wipe out Israel. Or maybe not. Maybe they will all actually stick together and out of it will come a new friendship and understanding between Jews and Muslims.....

AHahhahaHahahaha! Yeah right.

Still - it's possible. (That they actually stay allies through the whole war)

People who are scared vote for right-wing "strongmen". Those leaders go on to antagonize other countries, increasing the external threat, which in turn makes people even more scared.

Hmmm. Sounds familiar.

Israelis will continue to move rightward politically as long as Iran and Syria keep up their hostile crap. Those governments are directly responsible for the increasing appeal of jerks like Netanyahu. No offense, imashelcha, but he really has advocated expelling Arabs from the occupied territories. He's a nasty piece of work, and it's people like him on both sides of the Arab-Israeli conflict who are the problem.

imashelcha: You forgot "and drink their blood on Passover"

Several Israeli political parties advocate the expulsion of Palestinians from the West Bank. Netanyahu's rhetoric is in line with that notion. He does not propose a solution, he only advocates universal discrimination against Palestinians and blatant land grabs.

HARDLY the same thing and you know it. Israelis are not agreed on what should be done about the territories, and yes, opinions DO come out in favor of expulsion. They're not carrying the day, but they are there, and they regularly start flamewars in comments sections in papers over there as well.

In the US, it's like everyone things all Israel has to have one unified opinion, but why they should be so unique is beyond me - all countries have disagreements on policy.

itazurakko: but why they should be so unique is beyond me - all countries have disagreements on policy.

True. But they're nearly all united on the issue of whether their neighbors should be lobbing rockets at them every day. It doesn't get a ton of daily coverage because they tend to be sucky rockets which do not achieve any meaningful goal or kill anyone, but I think people would be surprised just how much could be accomplished if only those neighbors would stop with the rocket-launching for a bit.

"Any areas we evacuate now will be taken over by Hamas, which is simply a tool of Iran. The only reason this is not also Hamastan, like the Gaza Strip has become, is because the IDF is here," said Netanyahu.

-snip-
Congratulating the young farmers on being true capitalists, in addition to settlers, Netanyahu said that he was reminded of the "early pioneering spirit of Israel."

"I would like to see the maximum possible development, and the maximum possible area kept in any future peace deal," said Netanyahu.

-snip-
Netanyahu's decision to visit an illegal outpost was highly controversial, and members of his staff considered canceling the appearance hours before. Likud activists from within the settler movement insisted that he visit the outpost, claiming that it would set the tone for his eventual campaign as prime minister.

-snip-
Netanyahu also promised to advance a plan to build more Jewish-only roads to link the settlements with Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, affording settlers more business opportunities.

WHEN? Where has once Netanyahu advocated expulsion of Arabs from anywhere? Give me a link! a quote! anything! really!!!
I mean, all I have is this:

Wye
Hebron

and the fact that his government was overthrown from THE RIGHT because of his concessions to Arafat.

So yeah, I think the libel comparison was in place. Just because some Jews think something doesn't mean all Jews think that.

Heh. That's kind of how I feel about Bush. Yeah, he's not very good at this war thing and he's not the brightest bulb in the batch but unlike all too many of his opponents at least he's smart enough to KNOW THAT WE'RE AT FARKING WAR! Same in Israel. Somehow, Olmert actually managed to fight a whole freaking war with Syria and Hezbollah without knowing he was in one. How can someone be that dumb?

Good to see you back Bibi.

And the soul of Israel withers a little more.

You can be a Democracy, Israel, or you can be a Jewish nation. You cannot be both.

Remember that as you march towards a racial State.

When was the first time this guy got elected? Like 1975? Israel has had the same 3 PMs for like 40 years it seems like, christ, it would be like the 2008 election being between Gerald Ford and Michael Dukakis.

Gah!

Looks like an Indian reservation. "We get the good land. You get the shiatty land and you're not allowed to leave. We also reserve the right to build roads across your land, that you're not allowed to use. We also reserve the right to seize your land when we see fit, and expel all of those living on it. We'll bring you rotting food twice a month."

hmm, not really accurate. With the territories in Palestinian hands Israel has a jewish majority.

Therefore - it can be democratic and jewish at the same time.

Something tells me you think of the "soul of israel" as somewhat left wing and socialist.

And hey, given what's happened in Lebanon and Gaza, and the proximity of the west bank to ben-gurion airport, tel aviv and most civilian life, perhaps a hardliner would be good for the next few years. Israel is in no position to return the west bank given the current situation and the difficulties in rooting out dug in militia groups in Lebanon and Gaza, and the likely leader of the country reflect this position. After last summers war, nobody wants a mini lebanon in the west bank.

Others will replace him when Israel can be assured it's safety. Barak types, willing to give up the land and east jerusalem.

Be interesting to see how Democracy might actually work. We govern you, but you get no vote. Disgusting.

Israeli Apartheid ftw.

For how long given the disparity in birthrate? No way.

BoozePenguin: Something tells me you think of the "soul of israel" as somewhat left wing and socialist.

As opposed to a Racial/Religious State?

Yes, by all means, strengthen the religious and political groups that view the land as theirs by birthright and consider the Palestinians subhuman. What could possibly go wrong?

I was referring to a Palestinian state.

Arabs in Israel do have the vote, as do arabs living in the golan, a region Israel annexed and therefore granted citizenship to it's residents. The west bank hasn't been annexed, so they are not israeli citizens. Illan Pappe's major constituancy is the Israeli arab populations and the united arab list holds seats in the knesset.

BoozePenguin: The west bank hasn't been annexed, so they are not israeli citizens.

How very convenient.

So how about the settlers? Didn't they get to vote? Hmmm.
