Hello?....

We want the old TV discussion threads for liters back, plz. kthx bye

  2007-03-01 05:49:44 PM
Heh, while I was watching the latest 24 some old knick-knack fell off the wall next to me, making a loud racket. It happened during a particularly suspenseful scene and totally spooked me. Nice that a six year old show can still draw you into its reality like that.

Over in the Politics Forum some of the Farkers are listing their political beliefs for general reference. I figure we could do the same here with our favorite TV shows, musicians, authors, etc.

I'll just start with a few of the shows I'm currently following:

House
24
Monk
Boston Legal
ER
Without A Trace
Studio 60
Grey's Anatomy

Of those, Studio 60 is (undeservedly, IMHO) on the brink of cancellation, while ER probably should have been euthanized long ago, though I still watch it for some strange reason.

Since I don't have cable, the only show I watch is 24, because I make it a priority to head over to my buddy's every Monday.

I hate Raymond from Everyone Loves Raymond, but I don't have anything against Chris from Everybody Hates Chris.

All I really want to do is watch Lost. I moved to Costa Rica and abc.com blocks foreign ips. Tried a couple of ip cloakers with no luck : ( No ABC on my cable here. New damn version of iTunes won't run on my 1.4GHz Toughbook and can't watch it anymore on the old version...does anyone know if you can watch it on Joost? If you can, and anyone would be kind enuf to share a Joost invitation, I would really owe you one. Or any other ideas, I am stumped. Is anyone even IN this forum?

  2007-03-07 07:41:33 PM

I can see it just fine.

From the initial comments it sounds like one of those cases where multiple links were submitted over a short time, so maybe the admins just cleaned up some of the redundant ones.

Every time I look at this thread I feel sorry for it. I feel this indescribable need to make that scroll bar on the side of my screen smaller. So I fill the space. To fill space today I'm going to write about music I enjoy, maybe you enjoy it as well, maybe you don't. Maybe you've never listened to it before, if not, I'd recommend giving it a listen.

Morphine-A band that I'm listening to constantly. Too bad the lead singer died. I think they've got a unique style, sometimes upbeat, sometimes not so upbeat, kind of sexy. "I Know You (Part III)", "Thursday", "Top Floor, Bottom Buzzer", and "Super Sex", are all great, and there's a bunch more. Some of their songs are pretty depressing ("In Spite of Me" comes to mind) but that's all right.

Soul Coughing-Another unique band, but probably better known than Morphine. Most of their stuff is pretty random, which I think is what really draws me in. There's one that I have no idea where I got it from called "Coffee Song" that is strange as hell but cool. "So Far, I Have Not Found the Science", "Blue Eyed Devil", "Disseminated", and "The Incumbent", are all excellent lesser known tunes, and of course "Rolling", "Circles", and "Super Bon Bon".

311-They catch a lot of shiat, but nevertheless, I think they're great. In my opinion "Soundsystem", "Grassroots", and "Music" are their best albums.

The Beastie Boys-Slipping a little in their old age (at least judging by "To the Five Burrows"), but still cool. "Sabotage" still kicks ass, "Paul's Boutique", almost 20 years old, remains to be outstanding. "Licensed to Ill" is a classic party album. Who can resist "Girls" and "Brass Monkey"? Not me, that's for sure.

Ok, I'm getting tired of typing, and we all know no one reads a post with a bunch of text anyway (I realize that means no one has made it to this point), so here's a few more, but no more long descriptions. Bad Religion, Rancid (and Operation Ivy before them), and NoFX are all great old school punk bands that have interesting views and kick ass songs, the whiny emo guys could learn a thing or two from them. On that note (the whiny emo guys)I also really dig Weezer. Tool, NIN, The Bloodhound Gang, Ice Cube, Nirvana, and Less Than Jake are all on my must have list. I could continue on, but I think that's enough about my musical tastes for now. I think I've filled enough space.

Farkn Yaj Yenrac: "Sabotage" still kicks ass

QFT. I always had a soft spot for "Flute Loop" as well, kinda quirky and unexpected, but still fun.

Could you imagine how tiring it must be to hang out with Sonic Youth? I posit that it must be extremely exhausting, like you would go to get on the bus and then Thurston would get on the bus in a totally awesome way that is expanding the definition of getting on the bus and it wouldn't be a bus, it would be a rickshaw.

Kim Gordon and the others would kinda' look on and be bored.

Talking with them would be kind of annoying, because you'd have to get used to them talking about their everyday friends in the way that namedroppers talk about their famous friends except, you know, Thurston knew Lungleg when everyone called her "Liz". At least you'd be spared them saying something like, "I was talking to Nick Cave, lead singer of the Bad Seeds and..." because they are Sonic Youth, of course they know Nick Cave. Why would they have to point out that they know him?

  2007-03-24 01:41:44 PM
Also, I'd like to point out that Foetus/Jim Thirwell is a master of genres but man, oh man do his vocals and lyrics suck.

By "master of genres" I mean that Damon Albarn wishes he had an ounce of Thirwell's control and scoring ability and I hope his work on The Venture Brothers gets the attention it deserves.

Does food fall under the Entertainment category? 'Cause I'm always looking for different food/recipe ideas to break the gastronomic monotony, but in a fairly small town I don't get much variety from the restaurants.

Well, I was verbally abused by an overzealous cop today, so that was my entertainment. NO, wait - my fun entertainment will be sitting here tonight, writing a letter to both the mayor and police captain of the little burb, explaining in detail why you just don't fark with darkhorse23 when she's not bothering anyone.

Oh, yeah, it'll be sweet. Last letter I had to write because someone overstepped their little ego got the asswipe fired. Mmmmmm, I love the smell of asswhuppin in the evening.

Farkn Yaj Yenrac:

You're so right about Morphine...I have lost my copies of their albums unfortunately, and I'm at a loss as to where to get them again...sadness.

As for the Beastie Boys, you're also right...I am actually listening to "The Sounds of Science" as I type this.

was I the only one who watched "planet earth" sunday night? 3 hours (2 in a row, 1 hour of deadliest catch, then 1 more) of biatch'n nature stuff. it's the coolest idea for a nature documentary ive ever heard: a guide to the planet earth as a whole, presumably for a perspective of someone not from earth. I thought it was brilliant, EXTREMELY pretty to watch, and edutaining. it might have something to do with the fact that I was tripping my balls off while I watched it but hey, it was still cool right?

BlueBook: ...kinda quirky and unexpected, but still fun.

That's what the Beasties are best at, I think.

SlackingToBabylon

That's a shame, I suppose their stuff is out print now... Sadness concurred.

To keep up on my theme from my last post, I just started listening to Pepper, I think they're from Hawaii, they sound like Sublime, only a little more of a reggae sound, and a little less rap. I kept hearing "No Control" on Sirius and had to check them out (it sounds different than most their other stuff, I found out, but not in a bad way). I think they have a few albums, I just picked up 2 of their most recent, "No Shame" and "Kona Town". If you've never heard them before I'd recommend checking them out, excellent summer tunes.

/I'm so proud, that little scroll bar on the side of my screen is slightly shorter...

Farkn Yaj Yenrac: (at least judging by "To the Five Burrows")

In my continuing quest to reduce scroll bar size I feel that I must point out that I am slightly retarded. Burrows != Boroughs. Although an album dedicated to the 5 diggers might be alright. Even better would be an album dedicated to the 5 Burros. Donkeys are cool.

A couple years back there was a website going around that would let you put in an artist's name or song title, and it would pick something similar to the genre and play it for you. It was random what you'd get - rarely do you get exactly what you asked for - and mostly only referenced (from what I remember) publically popular songs and singles, but not entirely. Its purpose was to show the user other artists in the genre that the user may not be familiar with or get exposed to ordinarily.

I'd like to use this to expand my own music collection; however, I do not remember the name of the website at all. I figure this would be a good place to see if someone knew what I was talking about.

So, anyone know what I am referring to, and perhaps have a link to it, if it still exists?

Big Black's cover version of Kraftwerk's "The Model" is far superior to Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine's version of the same. Both top any band's take on the long version of Don MacLean's "American Pie" or any cover ever done by a ska band.

"An Open letter to NYC" is one of my favorites on that album, also "Hey fark You", in fact I like pretty much the whole album, just not as much as their previous efforts. Also, thanks for the Pandora link, interesting site.

SockMonkeyHolocaust:Both top any band's take on the long version of Don MacLean's "American Pie" or any cover ever done by a ska band.

1)Does that include Madonna's version of "American Pie"? Cuz that was a musical masterpiece.
2)Propaghandi wishes to interject:
"Ska sucks.
The ska revival isn't cool you stupid fux.
The bands are only in it for the bucks,
and if you don't believe me, you're a schmuck."
3)I have never heard of Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine, but I think that's a great band name.

Farkn Yaj Yenrac: 1)Does that include Madonna's version of "American Pie"? Cuz that was a musical masterpiece.

I want to hit you with a rolled up newspaper and scream, "NO! BAD!" at you.

"Ska sucks.

Eh, I like ska. I just don't think that the late 90s Third Wave was all that good of a chapter in the history of the evolution of the ska/punk genre with the huge influx of 80s covers being a particular low point.

3)I have never heard of Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine, but I think that's a great band name.

Have you heard of Snuff? They are a poppier version of Snuff. If you like Less Than Jake or any pop punk bands, then pick up either Snuff or Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine.

SockMonkeyHolocaust: I want to hit you with a rolled up newspaper and scream, "NO! BAD!" at you.

I probably deserve it.

Eh, I like ska. I just don't think that the late 90s Third Wave was all that good of a chapter in the history of the evolution of the ska/punk genre with the huge influx of 80s covers being a particular low point.

I don't really have anything against ska, but I've never been too into it, either, off the top of my head the only ska bands that I've listened much to are The Specials and Fishbone. "Ska Sucks" just popped into my head and I posted it.

Have you heard of Snuff? They are a poppier version of Snuff. If you like Less Than Jake or any pop punk bands, then pick up either Snuff or Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine.

I'm interested, what's their best stuff to check out?
