Indeed. Probably an even more immediate risk to smokers. Cigarettes are nasty but cutting it with a biker's ass hair to make another nickle off a pack is probably even worse, tardmitter.

Thank god.

amounting to more than $1 million in lost revenue for taxpayers

Somehow I don't think it's the taxpayers that are as concerned over "losing" that money, as the people that planned to spend it.

The way the story reads, if the tax had been paid it wouldn't have been a problem, even if they were cut with biker ass hair.

FTA: More than half of the seized cigarettes were deemed counterfeit, posing a serious health and public safety risk to their consumers.

Half of them were Biker Ass Hair Smokes(TM) according to the article. Of course if you buy cigarettes from bodegas you've smoked untaxed, unregulated cancer sticks before anyway.

Wait a minute. Are you guys saying that smoking is bad for you?

A few weeks ago, a Chinese-American man was sentenced in Philly for participating in a ring that had imported more than 1 million counterfeit cigarettes into the U.S. from China. If they've got lead on the toys, melamine in the pet food, and ethylene glycol in the toothpaste, you can just guess what they're putting in the cigarettes . . . .

Still taste better than clove cigs.

Smoke all-new "Chinks"!
The low-tar cigarette made with water buffalo dung and rice husks!
Who needs that imperialistic running-dog tobacco, anyway?

Oh, and real cigarettes do not pose a health risk to smokers?

2007-08-13 01:46:40 PM
Go on, raise tobacco taxes again. You'll breed smugglers like fungus. It's how americans deal with unfair taxiation.

nearly 1,000 "master cases'' of untaxed cigarettes, amounting to more than $1 million in lost revenue for from taxpayers.

D.A. Brown says a raid at a Queens warehouse uncovered nearly 1,000 "master cases'' of untaxed cigarettes, amounting to more than $1 million in lost revenue for taxpayers.

Lost revenue for taxpayers? WTF? Only a Government official could argue that not paying taxes on a product is lost revenue for that person.

The proper nomenclature is submitard.

I like my fake Camels grown in lead-contaminated soil, with a healthy mercury and cadmium fallout. And just add formaldehyde and bisphenol-a to mask the taste of the hemlock leaves, cut at a rate of one to three into the tobacco.

mmm... pancake: Lost revenue for taxpayers? WTF? Only a Government official could argue that not paying taxes on a product is lost revenue for that person.

That's how the government counts tax dollars tho. Say they project a $10 income from taxes next year. Well, due to market downturns and various other factors, they only collect $8. In government accounting terms they count that 'missing' $2 as a loss and factor that 'loss' into NEXT years tax increases. So next year, they project collecting $12 in taxes....lather, rinse, repeat.

This is what happens when govts impose too many sin taxes.

2007-08-13 02:18:37 PM
Fake? How about lost taxes? That's what it is really all about. Nothing more. Can the media just once say that cigarettes are a cash cow for the States. They lose revenues by continually taxing them and then they whine about it. Which will eventually create these criminal black markets for them. You can't have it both ways.

Good grief, look what taxes and regulations have done to booze and beer and the hospitality industry? The country should NOT exist solely to main a fiscally irresponsible government and their bureaucracies in a life style they've grown to think is an entitlement. Leave the people alone.

oh, i forgot to make an irony nazi comment, which is what i came in here for in the first place.

///perhaps this IS ironic

so if these cigaretts are bad for smokers, how bad are they for non-smokers? insta-death-on-a-stick?

2007-08-13 02:34:16 PM
As the "Sin Tax" on smokes rises, you'll see more and more of this. Smokers will die off, one way or the other.

I remember once reading a breakdown of who is making money off smoking. The government (in Maryland, whos tobacco tax is way lower then NYC) was making more then everyone else in the supply chain put together.

no matter how good it feels, the smokers hack/cough is not sexy

this is how you get kids to stop smoking
do what my school did. take a trip to a hospital and view a smokers lung versus a healthy lung.. in kintergarden. i dont want MY lungs looking like that.

//Impossible to quit

2007-08-13 03:39:31 PM
this is the order of the day in places like Toronto where a pack will run you $10-12. its either Native smokes or knock-offs. and to be sure you look a whole lot cooler with a pack of "marlboros" than you do "DKs"... just saying is all

/quasi-facetious

boshans: //Impossible to quit

Hardest thing I ever did, but worth it. Gotta find your own method, though. For me, I kept a set of weights around and would curl when I got a craving.

/Gained 15 lbs that summer.

You say that like the FDA regulates what goes into tobacco.

2007-08-13 03:59:14 PM
well thank good they took those death sticks off the market that were posing a health risk to the public. Now if you excuse me, I have to go to chemotheoropy for my lung cancer. After that I hope to continue my usual 2 packs a day of healthy cigarettes that have passed government health inspection.

2007-08-13 04:02:14 PM
LOL, this is like claiming success in the drug wars by arresting those who sell soap as crack/cocaine.

ignignot: err, encourage him in his habit

err: that's a good smoker
