Is it just me, or was that article all over the place? It was like reading the same thing three times or so.

The SCTV parody of The Merv Griffin Show was perhaps some of the funniest shiat I've ever seen. As was this (new window), which was based on an actual incident (except for Liberace being there).

RIP, game-show dude

Who is Merv Griffin?

/Good pun.
//Thanks for the great shows Merv

No, I believe it was a Palindrome. Of course, the palindrome of Merv Griffin would be "notlob"

How disappointed was he!?

blank = microphone

ParagonComplex: Is it just me, or was that article all over the place? It was like reading the same thing three times or so.

That generally means you're seeing an un-edited full article (often from a wire service from AP).

Generally, journalists are encouraged to write their articles in a tiered format: give the important information, then repeat it with more elaboration, then repeat it again with all of the details. This is so that the various outlets that get the article can pick and choose how they want to use it (grab just the first two paragraphs and you've got a "newsflash" blurb; get the first half for a standard short article; etc.)

/More than you ever wanted to know about writing for a wire service!

Jamshid: Right, while Marv Albert had prostitutes suing him, Merv Griffin had a "secretary/bodyguard" sue him for palimony and a former (also male) Dance Fever host sue him for sexual harassment.

http://realestalker.blogspot.com/2007/02/merv-griffin-in-carmel-valley.html

Of course, he was also a closeted, Reagan-supporting, Republican.

Whatever, the bastard can rot in hell, spend eternity explaining his political stance to one of his friends who died of gay cancer in the 80s.

gay cancer?

I LOL'd. Even though that show was off the air before I was born, I still watch reruns on the Game Show Network every so often.

Thundar: I am pretty sure that Columbia and Coca-Cola are connected but did he sell the same property 2 times?

Columbia Pictures was owned by Coca-Cola at the time. The article could have been a little bit more clear on that.

My name is not Merv Griffin. My real name is George.

That's one of the most terribly written articles I've ever read. Are they hiring high school sophomores or brain-damaged socialites to write for them, now?

...is it part of the joke that that's a Goodson show?

Wow. I never thought that flaming, queer republican bastard would be dead today. Oh well, thanks for "Jeopardy" and good riddance otherwise. No more sexually harassing the pool boy and the gardener...

I suspect the REAL elevator killer got him. Has he been checked for an injection of window cleaner?

Drag. I watched his show all the time as a kid. Mostly because that's what the grown ups watched. But I became a fan.

Dialectic: Screw this dead queen, I bet Denny Terio must be dancing on ceiling. Terrio is also the man who taught John Travolta how to dance.

O/t here... Not true. His dance lessons when he was a kid in NJ were with Fred Kelly. Who was Fred Kelly? Not only was he a great dancer in his own right (created the cha-cha!), but his brother is some dancer somewhere, Broadway, Hollywood, don't remember. *wink*

I never forgave Merv for eliminating the buying of merchandise after a contestant solved the puzzle on the Wheel. Yes, I miss the porcelain dalmation for $150. A better deal you could not find.

/RIP Merv

I remember Merv's variety show. It was the last show I saw before I went to bed as a kid. Merv and Johnny Carson...what a great childhood I had...filled with dreams of appearing on a variety show just to hang out with the likes of those two (and Mike Douglas)...
Then in my 20's I discovered Tom Snyder.
All gone...replaced by lesser men.

RIP Merv. Somewhere someones playing your hit on the radio...

AXESMI: DBrandisNC Quote 2007-08-12 12:23:03 PM
My grandfather was a writer on the Merv Griffin Show years ago.

Long after my GF died, my mother got cancer. Merv cut a check to help with her medical expenses.

He got us through some rough times.

Sounds like he had a real heart of gold. A great man on and off screen.

RIP Merv.

But... but... but... he was a REPUBLICAN!!!! They should be OUTLAWED and thrown in CONCENTRATION CAMPS!!!!

/sorry, still laughing about that gay-cancer jackass

So by your logic all Merv's "friends who died of gay cancer" are in hell too. Why do you hate gay people, Mr. Phelps?
