That's astonishing. In no other profession in the universe do workers give their co-workers access to benefits and treatment that normal people do not receive.

So if you want immunity from DUI charges just become a cop.

I know! How amazing!

Cops are trained driver, and therefore when the drive while intoxicated it's probably better than most of the drivers on the roads sober.

I never thought it was a secret that police look out for other police... But this isn't always the case with the laws that matter (ie DUI matters, 5 mph over the limit doesn't)

From the first part of this article:

In 2002, Tacoma police Officer Gurdial Garcha hit a telephone pole in Kent in his personal van, so drunk that he was nearly six times the legal limit. Some in his department wanted him fired, but he got a two-day suspension and lost two vacation days.

There are some good cops out there...

Duh. Wait...let me elaborate on that: DUH.

Why is the scary tag used here? This is the most blatent case for the obvious tag that I've ever seen.

Watch a cop get beaten and arrested. Sure I'll head right out and watch some now.

This can't be true because only a few cops are bad apples and the rest are dedicated public servants who would never let something like this occur.

I'll guarantee you it isn't just DUIs, either.

Epsilon: So if you want immunity from DUI charges just become a cop.

My cousin's ex-boyfriend was in the Air National Guard. After breaking up with her, he tried to stop by her house one night - driving drunk. He missed a curve, and flipped his SUV over a guardrail. Cops showed up. He flashed his ANG shield. They put him in the back of the police car... and dropped him off at my cousin's house scot-free. (She wasn't even home. Don't know how he got back.) The next week his application to become a police officer in a neighboring city was approved.

True story.

I think that just proves the main point even more so Ryan, not the opposite like you had hoped. Unless by some you meant an incredibly small percentage.

Pocket Ninja - That's astonishing. In no other profession in the universe do workers give their co-workers access to benefits and treatment that normal people do not receive.

I don't know of many other fields wherein workers grant their co-workers complete immunity from their actions.

If you're my pal, sure I'll try to help you out of a jam or give you an extra hand if you need it... However, I won't attempt to completely shield you from your own arrogance or stupidity.

In most professional environments where I've worked, co-workers hold each other accountable... and we're just dealing with stupid shiat like TV shows and advertising, not carrying guns, enforcing laws, and depriving people of their liberty and livelihoods.

I would be inclined to think that when the stakes are so much higher, the degree of accountability should follow suit.

Actually at most they go to a tribunal and it rarely goes beyond that.

My father-in-law Carl was a state policeman, and had the reputation that he didn't cut anyone any slack.

At Carl's funeral, a fellow officer was delivering his eulogy. He said that when he was on his way to his first day of law enforcement school, Carl pulled him over for speeding. He tried to dodge the ticket by telling Carl, "you know, I'm on my way to my first day of school to be a state trooper". Carl said, "well, step back to the cruiser and I'll show you how to write a ticket".

Some good cops out there? They only wanted him fired! Heck, I work at a bank and if I got a DUI, I'd be fired and the law would still prosecute me.

SIX times over the legal limit, you and I the cops would throw up under the jail.

It can be obvious and scary. Most of us don't really like corruption and favoritism in our police. But yes, we know it is rampant.

Some of the worst DUI offenders I have personally known are cops.

They know they aren't getting in trouble.

/ps they also race their cars on public streets.

I'm not a cop and I've gotten out of two DWIs. Go figure. Some cops suck some are kinda cool.

I get apoplectic about the whole "Thin Blue Line" thing. Cops are supposed to uphold the law. The one thing in the world that should be most repugnant to a cop, is a dirty cop. They shouldn't need an IAB -- every cop should be the IAB.

Don't these people read Judge Dredd?

Of course, I also think being a cop should require a four-year degree. And they should make twice what they do now. With guaranteed health care for life. If someone's gonna risk his or her life for society, society should pay that person back.

2007-08-07 04:10:21 PM
Hmmmm. I wonder why most people don't trust the police.

Did you miss a comma there? i.e.:

Watch a cop, get beaten and arrested. Sure I'll head right out and watch some now.

Not being snarky or a grammar nazi, really trying to make sure I understood, because it changes the meaning quite significantly.

Pocket Ninja: That's astonishing. In no other profession in the universe do workers give their co-workers access to benefits and treatment that normal people do not receive.

Similarly, in few other professions are people entrusted with a certain level of authority in order to uphold the law. Abusing said authority in an effort to not uphold the law violates said trust.

"And they should make twice what they do now. With guaranteed health care for life. If someone's gonna risk his or her life for society, society should pay that person back"

We could hire illegal Mexicans and cut the pay in half and not pay for health care at all! Hell Yeah! Saving money is great.

Because deep down the police know that DUI laws are BS and are the result of the MADD fear mongering. I'm not condoning driving wasted, but as an experienced drinker, I'm not a threat to myself or anyone else when driving home after 4 or 5 beers, especially since I'm a very safe driver in the first place. But I'm probably a hair over the limit, so if I get caught I get all the fun stuff that comes with a DUI and get treated the same as some idiot who drank a bottle of whiskey and decided to drive.

/bring on the hate

Kunochan

"Cool" is me not going to jail when the cop was perfectly within his rights to take me in. Allowed me to go home with a sober friend instead. I would say that cop was "cool". Make me no less of a idiot for driving drunk, but...

My sister-in-law recently got in a wreck, she was admittedly DUI (idiot)and failed the field sobriety test, and she was let off the hook because her passenger was friends with the cop.

Last year I worked with two part-time cops. They loved to tell the story about how one of them had pulled over the other one, who was completely drunk, and then let him drive himself home.

It's all a bunch of bullshiat.

I dream of getting rear ended by a drunk, on-duty cop in a marked car, with witnesses.
That would be sweeter than winning the Powerball.
And likely more profitable.

2007-08-07 04:18:49 PM
fark that noise. Rationalize it all you want, but you god damn well know that cops with any integrity believe they should be held to a higher standard, not a lower one. You want to know why people have a bad opinion of cops? Want to know why people think the police are corrupt? Start here. The blue line is thin - want to keep it intact? You can start by enforcing the law the same for everyone.

/and no, I don't want any tickets to the stupid 50's rock and roll show, thanks for asking
