good, so this should mean kids these days can stop wearing those awful retard helmets when they're just riding around the neighborhood.

I think the best thing I can do for any kids I might eventually have is never teach them to ride a bike. When I'm a pedestrian I hate bicyclists who ride on the sidewalk, and when I'm driving a car I have bicyclists who ride in the street. Bikes would be great if we had segregated and exclusive routes of travel for them, but we don't. Because bikes don't mesh well with either pedestrians or vehicles, I don't see any reason to teach my kids to ride one. Also, if they don't know how to ride a bike I bet they will be much less likely to want a dirt bike or motorcycle.

I love riding ATVs. I recently road one through the mountains of Colorado at some pretty fast speeds. There were a few times where I almost lost control. These machines are heavy -- with some of the bigger ones easily surpassing 400 pounds. They can crush and kill you if you don't pay attention to what you're doing.

That said, they aren't that dangerous if you have some experience riding them. You just have to know when to ditch the ATV to save your own ass. I've had to ditch an ATV before. I went up a slope that was just too many degrees and even pushing all my weight to the front, I felt it start to tip back. I kicked off the ATV with all my strength and hit the ground beside it while it started to tumble down the hill.

Oops! The insurance company bought it. They can't buy your life back.

Motorcycles on the other hand are quite a bit more nimble.

Not all people who ride bikes are dicks. I was exposed to a motorcycle when I was around 5 years old. It was a small little bike with a 200cc engine at best, but it did teach me the basics. I can tell you that when you ditch a bike and get a little road rash as a kid, it wakes your ass up to the dangers of doing wheelies on the freeway (which is absolutely stupid -- just guys with a glorified suicide plan).

You can actually drive an ATV on streets and highways in Montana. Hilariously enough, it only takes about 500 deaths for Montana to revisit their laws and go: "Hmmmmm, perhaps this wasn't a good idear"

nand: I think the best thing I can do for any kids I might eventually have is never teach them to ride a bike.

Why not mountain biking? Really, there's a lot of reasons to.

A: You're not being a jerk to pedestrians/motorists
B: You're getting a GREAT work out
C: You're having a lot of fun
D: You actually spend time outside, rather than in front of a TV/Computer
E: Your kid can play with other kids when they're on THEIR bikes

Really, I can't think of any reason not to teach a kid to ride a bike. It's good for them, it's fun, and as long as you teach them to not be a jackass, they won't bother people/drivers.

A buddy of mine used to ride ATV's every weekend in High School. He'd go out to the hills by our house before they got developed and he seemed to really enjoy it. But 5 years later, BAM, Herpes... I'll never ride ATV's...

True. We're all going to check out at some point. Some will go curled up in a little ball in the corner scared while others will drive right into it at full speed while flipping the bird.

You can't live your life afraid of dying because then you're already two parts dead.

A huge part of the problem is that many states do not set a minimum required age for ATV riding. I've been riding an ATV since 16 (minimum age here in PA, except for special permits) and I started out with required ATV riding courses (I believe it's required for under-18 if you want to ride on state land).

Quite simply, a 120lb 13-year old should not be driving a 400cc, 500lb behemoth.. and from what I see on the trails, those sorts of ATVs seem to be, by far, the most popular. Every ATV rider I know has had some sort of accident.. after all, the fun in ATV riding is pushing the limits. These kids are not old enough or experienced enough to handle the relatively extreme limits set by most ATVs.

Early-on accident examples:
My brother's ATV flipped down a hill that he took incorrectly. I flipped my ATV forward while doing something stupid. My dad nearly got run over by his after flipping it. Like I said, accidents will happen.. especially when the driver is still unexperienced. If we had been using ATVs too large for us or taking terrain too challenging for us, we might have been seriously injured.

As always, the careless and stupid ruin it for the rest of us..

// Brother and I have been accident free for 8 years, father has been accident free for about 20. We've since upgraded.. well, my father is still using his 1983 Suzuki Quadrunner, and he looks absolutely silly on it.

ATVs are badass. I worked for a company that took myself and some other employees to this place out in BFE Georga to ride ATVs during one of our yearly Atlanta mettings.

I wanna go back. :(

ATV's are the annoying Sea-do's of the land variety.

The only difference is incompetent Sea-do riders tend to injure/kill other folks and incompetent ATV's riders darwin themselves...

When I see the sissy kids ride around the neighborhood on their bikes with their shiny new bike helmets, I just want to puke. Why don't parents just wrap their precious snowflakes in bubble wrap and be done with it? The dumb kids don't even know how to wear helmets properly, thereby minimizing the amount of good they actually do. People are so afraid of infinitesimal risks. Instead of worrying about bike crashes, lightning strikes, and kiddie diddlers, try teaching Little Miss Sunshine to get some exercise, stop stuffing her fat face with Twinkies, and oh by the way, don't smoke when you grow up. Worry about heart disease and cancer, the things most likely to kill off your stupid child.

So, in summation, I say TAKE THAT HELMET OFF, FRANCIS! Nerf childhoods are no way to prepare the youth of America for the sharp edges of the real world.

Exactly. While I can go into places an ATV simply would not fit though, where I ride, there are ATV-only accessible areas. Simply because its so muddy a bike would just sink in and get stuck.

My brother, dad, and I all ride dirt bikes, and we've all been towed out of mud by at least once by an ATV.

Dumbass parents that put their kids into powered wheeled vehicles deserve to have their kids crushed and delivered back to them in a hefty bag.

Seriously. Power wheels? then ATVs? I got my asshat trust fund ADD neighbor putting his 3 year old on one of those mini motorcycles and letting him tool around the neighborhood. I'm considering some piano wire accross a couple lightposts so I can perform a goddamned 11th trimester abortion.

Bikes are ok. Pedal power, keeps 'em fit. Powered machines for little kids is just stupid.

I work for a group of motorcycle dealerships, so I'm really getting a kick...

It would be interesting to know how many of those kids who die each year were properly attired (helmet STRAPPED ON PROPERLY, gloves, body armor, etc.) and properly trained. ATVs are NOT TOYS, and should be respected as such. But Billy Badass figures he and his kids are too tough and cool to wear those "ghey" helmets, then they die, then these "concerned parent groups" try to fark it up for the responsible people.

Ah, well, pretty soon we'll all be covered in padding head-to-toe, going everywhere with public transportation and never drinking alcohol or eating cheeseburgers or doing anything else the slightest bit dangerous.

In 1996, 25,446 emergency department visits were made by individuals in the U.S. younger than 25 years as a result of horse-related injuries.

I guess owning horses should be illegal too, eh?
