Well hey, I'm only saying what the band told me.
Possibly, they were trying to continue the spin control the record company started.

You are right though, I just read a lengthy account of the song by Holmes.

Originally Scepter records was trying to claim that Timothy was a mule.

4.0? Pshh. That wouldn't even get me out of bed here in So Cal.

Hope the miners are all okay.

2007-08-06 02:54:21 PM
Meh. Coal miners are a dime a dozen, I'm sure.

2007-08-06 02:54:41 PM
They are now reporting that they don't know if a 4.0 earthquake caused the collapse or if the collapse is what actully registered the 4.0 earthquake.

And for everyone in 'Cali' who says the 4.0 isn't a big deal - have you ever been in even a small one while underground in a mine? No? - then shut the fark up already.

MSNBC just said U of U believes that there was no earthquake but that the collapse itself caused the 3.9 magnitude seismic waves.

21-7-b Quote 2007-08-06 01:22:12 PM

While I am well aware of the current coal fire in Centralia, PA (current population: 12 morons who refuse to leave the hellhole), I was not aware that there was a mine disaster earlier than that.

In the 60's, there was a landfill that had exposed some of the coal. A fire in the landfill started the coal on fire, and now all the coal under the damn city is burning.

IXI Jim IXI: p_dizzle: I'd say they are doing a decent job. You have to also realize that in Mining, there is a risk taking culture (especially coal mining) that is still alive and well in the employees themselves. The "get er done" attitude. It's tough to change this culutre, and I have direct experience trying.

Is there any info available to the amount of miners employed compared to the fatality rate? I mean, if there are fewer fatalities, but that's more due to fewer miners being employed due to automation, that might paint a different picture.

/merely asking for info

According to the AFL-CIO the fatality rate per 100,000 workers in 1970 was 100, vs. 2002 23.5 (Still about double the construction industry)
Mining is still the second most dangerous industry behind the coverall group "Agriculture, hunting, forestry, and fishing"

Who cares? They're probably mormons anyway, with any luck none of them have reproduced yet. Probably wishful thinking.

I'm sure you're just trying to be an ass and piss people off, but I'll reply anyway.

People like you bug the crap out of me. Because they have a different religious belief than you, you don't care that they're trapped in a mine?

Just because the god mormons believe in is a bit different from the god you believe in doesn't mean we should be happy about their circumstance.

If something like that happens to you, I hope to find out about it. I'll be the first one in line to say "Who cares. He's just an ass hat anyway. I hope he didn't have time to reproduce."

There plenty of people in plenty of professions (even mining professionals) that travel to where the best deal is.

ROFL. The god I believe in? Well that's a bit difficult that one, since I'm agnostic. As for their religious beliefs, it's not so much that but their choice of religious belief. I'm a great believer of Darwinism, so really I'd be equally as happy if someone just cut their balls off before they had a chance to reproduce.

See I'm all for clearing the gene pool of idiocy, and people dumb enough to follow a religion like mormonism (or whatever the correct terminology may be), fit perfectly into that catagory for me.

Also, presuming you're Christian, I'd just like to comment on how very Christian of you it was to wish a firey death upon me. Keep up the good work!

Okay now I'm done, you can FOAD (personally I don't care how, I'm not that malicious).

Um why were they in the mines when... we have the technology to know that there are earthquakes?
Or do they just ignore the small tremors before the good shake? fark I don't know I just know that..Mining sucks..but people need jobs.

p_dizzle: Your "Industry Shills" were safety professionals. Mines that follow the rules ARE punishable by fines, and negligent operators ARE subject to prison terms.

Since MSHAs creation:

I'd say they are doing a decent job. You have to also realize that in Mining, there is a risk taking culture (especially coal mining) that is still alive and well in the employees themselves. The "get er done" attitude. It's tough to change this culutre, and I have direct experience trying.

I think the MSHA has done great work until recently. Bush's Secretary of Labor, Elaine Chao, ruined the MSHA by appointing mining lobbyist and executives who wanted to deregulate the industry and did so by not enforcing the rules and charging pathetic fines for violations. This all came out during the Sago incident.

Yea. I'm christian. Don't claim to be a very good one, though.

I, too, subscribe to that line of thought. If you're an idiot and die as a result - no huge loss.

But saying that someone's an idiot and deserves to die just because they have different religious beliefs is asinine. I know you're not christian, but that's what I hate about most of 'em. I had a guy tell me once that his 20 member congregation of his church was the only true church. Everyone else - including other branches of his church were all going to hell.

Nobody has the right answer when it comes to religion. That's abundantly clear. But to sit there and say I'm right and everyone else is stupid and deserves to get stuck in a mine is kinda ignorant and a little juvenile.

You're agnostic, but how do you know you're right? How do you know the mormons are wrong (not opening a flame-war, nobody answer. It's a hypothetical question).

If they did something dumb in the mine that caused it to collapse, then fine. Let's bring Darwin in. But just because they have different believes, doesn't mean they deserve to get stuck in a mine.

2007-08-06 06:36:07 PM
Murray said he believes the miners have enough are to survive for an extended period of time.

They have enough ARE!? Are you sure the mine wasn't in South Carolina?

From MSNBC: Federal mine-safety inspectors, who have issued more than 300 citations against the mine since January 2004, were also on hand to help oversee the search.

Good job, guys. I assume since the mine was still open that all of those citations were for "nice to haves" and minor infractions like expired milk in the cafeteria.

3.9 actually, and it was a surface quake. The closer the hypocenter is to the surface, the more damage is done.

Most people don't realize this. All that matters in the press is the number, yet you can have a really high number in a really deep quake and it can go unfelt at the surface, or as in this case, a low-magnitude surface quake that does quite a bit of damage.

The press really should switch to the MMI scale.
